START PLANNING NOW

7–9 Months Out: Start Planning Your Disney Vacation

Walt Disney World covers 43 square miles — almost twice the size of Manhattan. There’s no such thing as over-preparing here; starting early simply means better choices, lower stress, and fewer compromises later.

Research, Budget, and Book

Start planning six to nine months before your check-in date. Begin with a realistic budget. Decide how many park days you want, what kind of resort fits your comfort level, and which experiences are worth splurging on.
Having a number in mind early prevents overspending and keeps your expectations grounded. Use the Disney World Budget Calculator to estimate your total trip cost.

Pick Your Disney Dates

Once you have a ballpark budget, choose your travel window. Check the Disney World Crowd Calendar to compare busy and quieter times. Lower-crowd days often mean easier Lightning Lane access and shorter lines.
Choose Your Parks and Days
After your dates are set, sketch a rough park plan. If you’re not using Park Hopper, dedicate one park per day. This makes dining reservations smoother later.

Plan Your Dining Experiences

Dining is a major part of the Disney experience — and it books up quickly. Write down your “must-eat” list early. If ‘Ohana breakfast, Beaches & Cream, or Cinderella’s Royal Table are on your radar, mark them now. Some reservations get snapped up super fast, so make sure to set a reminder for the 60-day mark to book those high-priority experiences. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  • Topolino’s (character breakfast)
  • Beaches and Cream
  • California Grill
  • Chef Mickey’s
  • Chef’s Table at Victoria and Albert’s
  • Cinderella’s Royal Table
  • Crystal Palace
  • Garden Grill
  • Homecoming
  • Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue
  • Le Cellier
  • Princess Storybook Dining at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall
  • Ohana
  • Space 220

Tip: Many restaurants release cancellations daily. If you don’t get your top choice at first, keep checking — persistence almost always pays off.

Starting Picking Out Attractions and Special Events

Feeling like going all out on this trip? If you’re thinking of diving into some of Disney’s extra magical experiences, keep these three things mind:

  1. What’s the cool event or attraction?
  2. When are you planning to check it out?
  3. When can you snag a reservation for it?

And just to sprinkle some pixie dust on your plans, here are a few fan-favorite events and attractions that usually go fast:

  • Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique – Booking opens 60-days from your check-in date
  • Disney Afterhours Events – Book when tickets are released
  • Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party – Book when tickets are released
  • Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – Book when tickets are released

WHERE YOU’ll LAY YOUR HEAD

6 Months Out: Choose Your Resort

Your resort shapes your Disney rhythm. Staying on property means earlier park entry, faster transportation, and priority booking windows. Off-property often saves money but adds commute time.

You can book Disney resorts up to 499 days in advance. And don’t fret about not knowing ticket prices and dining plan packages too far in advance – you can book room-only reservations. Usually, the packages are available around late June for the following year. If a better deal becomes available later, Disney will allow you to adjust your reservation to save money.

Tip: Booking through a Disney Vacation Planner (like me) means you never have to monitor discounts — I’ll handle that for you automatically.

Use the Disney Resort Recommender to find your perfect match based on budget, amenities, and park proximity.

5 Months Out: Build Your Itinerary

Now that your dates and resort are locked in, build the outline of your days.
Start with your group’s “must-do” rides and shows, then add rest time and meals. Group activities by location so you’re not backtracking.

Set up your My Disney Experience account if you haven’t already. It’s your digital command center for linking park tickets, reservations, and Memory Maker photos. Create your account on the Disney Website, and you can use my guide to walk through how to link your resort reservations, tickets, and people within your travel group.

Tip: Keep your plan flexible. You don’t need a minute-by-minute schedule — just a clear sense of priorities.

Your Key TO PARK ENTRY

4 Months Out: Buy Park Tickets

Purchase your tickets directly from Disney or through your Disney Vacation Planner, and link them to My Disney Experience immediately. This ensures your app and accounts are ready for dining and Lightning Lane bookings.

If you want unlimited photos from your trip, add Memory Maker now. Buying in advance costs less than purchasing inside the parks and automatically links all PhotoPass pictures.

2 Months Out (60 Days): Reserve Dining

Dining reservations open 60 days before check-in for Disney Resort Guests, and non-resort guests.

For on-property guests, you can book for your entire stay at once (up to ten days). For everyone else, mark your calendar and log in early each morning to secure reservations for each day of your vacation.

Use the Disney Dining Reservation Calculator to pinpoint your exact booking date.

Tip: Log into your account before 6:00 AM Eastern Time on your booking day. Have a list of your top restaurants ranked by priority and book them in order — speed matters.

TIME FOR THE DETAILS

45 Days Out: MagicBands and Transportation

MagicBands are your digital keys to the kingdom. They connect your resort, tickets, and payment method. About 45 days before your trip, log in to My Disney Experience to customize and order your MagicBands so they arrive before you leave.

If you’re flying in, this is also when to finalize airport transportation. Reserve Mears Connect, rideshare, or car service now to avoid last-minute price spikes.

Tip: If your flight schedule changes, update your transportation booking immediately. This ensures your pickup aligns with your actual arrival time.

7 Days Out: Lightning Lane Strategy

Lightning Lane Multi Pass gives you faster access to over 40 attractions.

  • Disney Resort Guests: bookings open 7 days before check-in.
  • Non-Resort Guests: bookings open 3 days before your first park day.

Plan to spend about $35 per person per day, depending on demand. Individual Lightning Lanes are sold separately for top-tier rides like TRON Lightcycle / Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

Here’s my guide on all things Disney Lightning Lanes. It walks you through how to make your Lightning Lanes and what rides are available at each of the Disney World parks.

Tip: Make Lightning Lane selections in order of popularity — they go quickly once the window opens. For in-depth strategies, check out my guide on the best Lightning Lane selections for each park.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even seasoned Disney visitors miss these easy-to-fix details:

  • Waiting too long to book dining. Most top restaurants are gone within hours of the 60-day mark.
  • Skipping crowd research. Crowd calendars can change everything — from wait times to resort rates.
  • Forgetting to link tickets in My Disney Experience. Without this, Lightning Lane booking won’t work.
  • Assuming flights are refundable. Always confirm your resort before booking airfare.
  • Ignoring promotions. Disney drops new offers several times a year. Your planner can help you reprice your trip.

Tip: Review this section right before your 60-day window opens. It’s your checklist against common headaches.
