The Story Behind Hurly-Burly at Disney’s BoardWalk

Reading Time: 5 minutes
Hurly-Burly lounge at Disney's BoardWalk

There is a fictional vaudeville star living in Disney’s BoardWalk, and her life story is painted on the walls. Hurly-Burly opened October 1, and Walt Disney Imagineering has now broken down the storytelling woven through the new lounge — from the name to the props to a hand-painted sign most guests will walk straight under.

The Story behind the Hurley-Burly is just the latest example of Disney bringing deep storytelling to their lounges in recent years. At Walt Disney World, this new direction began with the opening of Trader Sam’s at Disney’s Polynesian Resort, then continued with the opening of Oga’s Cantina, then GEO-82, followed by Beak and Barrel. For this Disney fan, it’s a welcome addition to the Disney Lounge experience.

Quick Summary

  • Hurly-Burly opened October 1 at Disney’s BoardWalk
  • The name is an old English phrase meaning tumultuous uproar
  • The lounge centers on Polly Delmar, a fictional vaudeville performer
  • Her story plays out chronologically across the walls as you move through
  • Seashell footlights, pearl pendants and gold shell motifs carry the coastal theme
  • Hurly-Burly is open daily from 4pm to 1am

There is considerably more in that room than a first visit reveals. Here is the full breakdown.

The Name

“Hurly-Burly” is an old English phrase meaning tumultuous uproar. According to WDI, it was chosen to reflect the playful pandemonium of a live audience bursting into applause.

It fits the venue’s identity as a seaside vaudeville theatre where performance and audience energy are inseparable. That is a more specific premise than “BoardWalk bar,” and it explains nearly every design choice in the room.

The Star: Polly Delmar

The lounge has a central character. Polly Delmar is a fictional vaudeville performer billed as the Toast of the Coast, and her story plays out in chronological order as you move through the space.

That sequencing is the detail that elevates this from set dressing to actual storytelling. The room has a direction.

Key Polly Delmar details to look for:

  • A large vintage performance poster for “Polly Del Mar — Comedy & Coastal Cabaret” hangs in a gold frame, billing her show at Hurly-Burly
  • Her red gloves and pearl necklace are framed on a nearby wall, displayed as genuine stage memorabilia
  • An early banner introducing her as a “Famous Mermaid” — part of the show “Vaudeville by the Sea” — sits near the bar
  • A sign for “The Illustrious Pearl” references another chapter in her career

The props chronicle her career, with the story building as you explore further in. Walk the room in order rather than heading straight to a seat.

The Theming Details

WDI highlighted the nautical and theatrical layers running through the design:

  • Seashell-shaped lights line the stage front — a nod to both vaudeville tradition and the coastal theme. WDI notes shell-shaped footlights were common in seaside theatres of the era
  • Gold seashell motifs appear across the bar fascia, the exterior awning trim, and as decorative props throughout
  • A ship’s wheel and wave cut-outs sit in one of the arched display niches, alongside fish-scale wallpaper in teal and gold
  • Pearl-shaped light fixtures hang as pendants, carrying through Polly’s pearl motif
  • “Vaudeville by the Sea” show posters feature nautical puns consistent with the BoardWalk’s identity
  • Pearl the Puppet — a character from one of Hurly-Burly’s fictional past productions — is on display to the right of the bar, among trunks, vintage fans, and instruments
  • The exterior hand-painted sign reads “Cocktails, Bites, Cabaret.” WDI confirmed it is hand-painted, not printed

Those seashell footlights are the detail worth appreciating most. Designing a historically accurate fixture for a theatre that never existed, in a period style, is the kind of research nobody asked for.

The Bulletin Boards

The wave-like roofline and teal exterior of Hurly-Burly at Disney's BoardWalk

Two framed bulletin boards in the back hallway add another layer, and they are the easiest thing in the lounge to miss entirely.

They feature audition notices for past Hurly-Burly productions — including a production of The Tempest — notes from Polly herself, a theatre sign-in sheet, and ads for fictional BoardWalk businesses, with references to Trattoria al Forno and a boardwalk ice cream shop.

Cross-referencing real neighboring restaurants into the fiction is the move that ties the lounge to the BoardWalk rather than leaving it a self-contained set. Go find them.

The Exterior

The wave-like roofline and teal color scheme were intentional. WDI notes oceanic imagery runs through the exterior architecture as well as the interior, with wave-like lines and colors across the whole building facade.

Worth stepping back across the BoardWalk to look at the building as a whole before you go in.

How to Actually See All This

Walk the room before you sit. Polly’s story runs chronologically, and taking the first open seat means reading it backwards.

Go to the back hallway. The bulletin boards are the densest storytelling in the building and the least likely to be noticed.

Look at the floor-level lights. The seashell footlights are below eye line.

Find Pearl the Puppet to the right of the bar.

Look up at the sign on your way in. Hand-painted signage is rarer than it should be, and this one says what the place is in three words.

The Bottom Line

Hurly-Burly is open daily from 4pm to 1am at Disney’s BoardWalk, and the storytelling inside rewards a slow visit.

A fictional vaudeville star whose career unfolds across the walls, seashell footlights researched from real seaside theatres, pearl pendants echoing her necklace, and bulletin boards advertising restaurants that actually exist a few doors down.

Go early in the evening when it is quiet enough to walk the room properly. The cocktails are the reason most people will visit, but the room is the reason to stay.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
