Disney took its newest Walt Disney World resort to Manhattan. A large-scale 3D street mural appeared at Flatiron Plaza at 23rd Street and 5th Avenue, giving New Yorkers a preview of Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge days before reservations open.
The piece depicted Daydream River, the resort’s lazy river, as chalk art you could step into and photograph.
The activation itself has wrapped, but the timing was the point — and the booking dates it was pushing are now days away.
Quick Summary
- A 3D street mural appeared at Flatiron Plaza in New York City on October 2
- It was created by muralist Tracy Lee Stum
- The mural depicted Daydream River, the resort’s lazy river
- The one-day activation ran from 10am to 5pm
- Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge opens July 1, 2027
- Reservations open October 6 for DVC, October 7 for Passholders, October 8 for all guests

The Mural
The installation was created by Tracy Lee Stum, a street muralist known for colorful interactive chalk pieces. She holds a 2006 Guinness World Record for the largest chalk painting by an individual.
Her piece rendered Daydream River — Lakeshore Lodge’s lazy river — as a 3D chalk artwork that visitors could step into, with the perspective trick making a flat plaza read as water.
Disney placed branded Lakeshore Lodge pool floats on the mural, and set up an A-frame Lake House structure alongside it as a photo opportunity.
The activation ran October 2 from 10am to 5pm at Flatiron Plaza. It was a single-day installation, so if you were not in Manhattan that Friday, the photos are all that is left.
Why Flatiron Plaza
The location choice is worth noting. Flatiron Plaza is a pedestrian space at one of the most photographed intersections in New York, with the Flatiron Building as a backdrop.
A 3D chalk mural only works from one viewing angle, which makes it a photograph rather than a sculpture. Putting it somewhere people already stop to take pictures, in front of a building that guarantees the location is recognizable, means every photo taken there carries both the resort branding and a clear “this is New York” signal.
For a Florida resort that does not open for nine months, buying attention in Manhattan on the week bookings open is a reasonable trade.
What It Was Promoting
Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge opens July 1, 2027 at Walt Disney World Resort, on the shores of Bay Lake.
Reservations open on a rolling schedule:
- October 6 — Disney Vacation Club members
- October 7 — Walt Disney World Annual Passholders
- October 8 — All guests, online or by calling (407) 934-7639
The first two days are phone-only. Online booking opens on the 8th.
Disney also recently revealed the Branch & Brush lounge and full grand lobby concept art, which is a more substantive look at what the resort will actually be.
Reading the Marketing Push
A street mural in New York, concept art drops in the same week, and a rolling booking schedule is a coordinated campaign rather than three separate announcements.
That tells you Disney is treating Lakeshore Lodge as a significant opening rather than a routine resort addition. The level of promotion is closer to what a new park land gets.
What it does not tell you is anything about pricing, which remains unannounced. A heavy marketing push ahead of a booking window is designed to create urgency, and urgency is the condition under which people book before they have compared the numbers.
Worth keeping in mind on October 8. Know what you are willing to spend before the window opens, not after you have seen the concept art again.
What We Know About the Resort So Far
For anyone coming to Lakeshore Lodge fresh, here is the picture as it currently stands.
The resort sits on the shores of Bay Lake and opens July 1, 2027. The theme leans into nature and the outdoors, which shows in the names — Daydream River for the lazy river, The Wetlands for the pool area, Branch & Brush for the lobby lounge.
Five food and beverage locations have been confirmed: Moonglade, Bay Lake Provisions, Paint Out Point Bar & Grill, Dandelion Terrace, and Branch & Brush.
The grand lobby centers on a blown glass sculpture called Colors of the Wind, with a bronze floor centerpiece and a fiberoptic river running around it.
What has not been announced is pricing, the full room breakdown, or whether any of it carries a Disney Vacation Club component. Those are the details that decide whether a resort is right for your trip, and none of them are public yet.
Should You Book Opening Summer
Booking the first weeks of a brand-new Disney resort is a real trade-off rather than an obvious win.
On the upside, everything is new, and there is genuine novelty in being among the first guests through the doors.
On the downside, new resorts open with operational rough edges. Restaurants run limited menus, amenities open in phases, and construction walls sometimes stay up past opening day. Opening dates can also move, which is harder to absorb when flights are already booked.
If a smooth trip matters more than being first, a stay a few months after opening usually delivers the better experience.
The Bottom Line
Disney promoted Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge with a one-day 3D street mural by Tracy Lee Stum at Flatiron Plaza in New York on October 2, recreating the resort’s Daydream River as chalk art with branded floats and an A-frame Lake House photo setup.
The activation is over, but what it was pointing at is not. Reservations open October 6 for DVC members, October 7 for Annual Passholders, and October 8 for everyone else, with the resort opening July 1, 2027.
If opening-summer dates matter to you, the booking date is the thing to write down. The mural was the advertisement; the calendar is the part that affects your trip.
