The Flying Door coaster just got a personal touch from the people who will one day run it. Cast members have signed a beam for the Monsters Inc Flying Door coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a milestone moment for the centerpiece attraction of Monstropolis.
The Walt Disney World Ambassadors shared a video of the beam signing ceremony on Instagram. Here’s what it means and where the project stands.
Quick Summary
- Cast members signed a beam that will become part of the Flying Door coaster building at Monstropolis.
- The Walt Disney World Ambassadors shared the ceremony on Instagram.
- The Flying Door coaster is a Vekoma suspended coaster, the first of its kind at Disney.
- Monstropolis is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027 and 2028.
- The land will also include the Glob Theater show, Harryhausen’s, Archie’s, and the Scareporium.
What Is a Beam Signing?
Beam signings are a long-standing cast tradition at Disney. They give the people who bring the parks to life every day a chance to leave a permanent mark on a new project before it’s sealed into the structure.
In the video, cast members sign a beam that will become part of the new coaster building at Monstropolis. Once it’s installed and the building is finished, those signatures will be hidden inside the structure, but they’ll be part of the attraction for as long as it stands. It’s a small ceremony, but it means a lot to the cast members who take part.
For fans following construction, beam signings are also a good sign. They usually happen when a project has reached a point where major structural work is well underway.
Where the Flying Door Coaster Stands
This milestone fits what we’ve been seeing from above. Steel for the coaster building has been rising for months, and coaster track has arrived in Florida.
We recently covered the latest Monstropolis aerials, which showed the entry gateway, brick paving in the plaza, a fountain foundation, the coaster building’s steel framework, and coaster track staged on flatbed trucks near EPCOT. Before that, we followed the Flying Door coaster track going in.
What Is the Flying Door Coaster?
The Flying Door coaster is the centerpiece of Monstropolis. It’s a Vekoma suspended coaster, Disney’s first, where guests ride aboard enchanted doors that sweep them through the world of Monsters, Inc. The concept draws on the famous door vault from the film, where Sulley, Mike, and Boo race through millions of doors on a massive rail system.
A suspended coaster means riders hang below the track instead of sitting on top of it. That gives the ride a very different feel from Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster or Slinky Dog Dash, and it should fit the “flying door” idea perfectly.
Everything Coming to Monstropolis
The Flying Door coaster is the headliner, but it’s not the only thing coming. Monstropolis will also include:
- The Glob Theater: A new show for the land.
- Harryhausen’s: A table-service restaurant inspired by the sushi spot from the film. Our post on the Harryhausen’s Restaurant permit covers the theming work underway.
- Archie’s: A quick-service dining location.
- The Scareporium: The land’s retail shop.
We’ve also covered a Monstropolis playground permit that points to a new play area for younger guests.
Where Monstropolis Fits in the Park
Monstropolis is being built in the area of Disney’s Hollywood Studios that was home to Muppet*Vision 3D and the Grand Avenue section of the park. That makes it one of the biggest changes the park has seen since Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened.
When it’s complete, Monstropolis will give Hollywood Studios another fully themed land built around a single Pixar story, with a headline coaster, a show, two dining locations, and a shop.
When Does Monstropolis Open?
Monstropolis is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027 and 2028. Disney has said the land will open in phases, and based on what Disney shared at D23, the Flying Door coaster isn’t expected in the first phase. Exact dates haven’t been announced.
If you’re planning a trip specifically for Monstropolis, keep that phased approach in mind. Parts of the land may welcome guests before the coaster does.
What This Means for Your Trip
For now, Monstropolis is still behind construction walls at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and you won’t see much from the ground. If you want to watch progress, aerial photos and the Skyliner, which passes near the off-site staging area by EPCOT, are your best bets.
The Bottom Line
Cast members signing a beam for the Monsters Inc Flying Door coaster is a fun milestone and a good sign that construction on the coaster building is moving along. The Flying Door coaster will be Disney’s first suspended coaster and the centerpiece of Monstropolis, which is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027 and 2028. There are no opening dates yet, but between rising steel, track deliveries, and now a signed beam, the project is clearly building momentum. We’ll keep following along.
