The door vault is starting to take shape. New aerial photos show the Monsters Inc Flying Door coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios now has track and support columns installed inside its show building, and walls are going up around it.
That’s a big milestone. Until recently, most of what you could see from above was foundations, steel, and stacks of parts waiting on the ground. Now the ride itself is going in.
The photos come from @bioreconstruct on X, who has been tracking Monstropolis from the air throughout construction. They show curving gray and black track snaking through the larger section of the building, held up by black support columns, while crews close in the exterior.
This is the headliner for Monstropolis, the new Monsters, Inc. land replacing the former Muppets Courtyard area. Parts of the land are set to open in 2027, but the coaster won’t be ready at the same time. Here’s what the new photos show, what we know about the ride, and what it means for planning your Hollywood Studios trips over the next two years.
Quick Summary
- Track is in: Coaster track and support columns are now installed in the larger section of the show building.
- Walls are going up: Crews are enclosing the structure, so these may be the last good looks at the track.
- The ride: A Vekoma suspended coaster, Disney’s first, where ride vehicles hang beneath the track.
- The launch: A vertical lift raises riders about 40 feet in roughly four seconds before launching them into the door vault.
- Timing: Parts of Monstropolis open in 2027. Disney hasn’t announced an opening date for the coaster.
- What opens first: The Glob Theater show, Harryhausen’s, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the Monsters University Alumni Club, and the Scareporium shop.

What the New Monsters Inc Flying Door Coaster Photos Show
The aerial images show a lot of progress at once. Inside the show building, track sections curve through the space, with branching black support columns rising from the floor. Construction equipment and materials are still spread across the site, and steel roof framing sits overhead.
At the same time, crews are adding walls to enclose the building. That’s the part that matters most for fans watching from the outside. Once the walls and roof are fully closed in, most of the remaining ride work will happen out of sight.
So if you love construction updates, enjoy these photos. They may be some of the last clear looks at the track layout before the box is sealed.
How Construction Has Progressed
This project has been moving at a steady pace. Over the past several months, the work has gone from early foundation work, to the arrival of support columns, to track deliveries, and now to active track installation.
Disney Tourist Blog has reported that the coaster’s show building is a bit bigger than the one for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. If that holds up, it would make it the largest show building at Hollywood Studios. That gives you a sense of how much ride is packed inside.
What the Monsters Inc Flying Door Coaster Will Be
Disney first announced the coaster at the 2024 D23 Expo, and shared more ride details at D23 in August 2026.
Disney’s first suspended coaster
The ride is a Vekoma suspended coaster, the first of its kind for Disney. Instead of sitting on top of the track, the ride vehicles hang beneath it. Vekoma is a longtime Disney ride manufacturer, so the partnership isn’t new, but the ride type is.
Riding the doors
Guests will board enchanted doors and get swept through the world of Monsters, Inc. Thematically, it pulls straight from the famous door vault chase scene in the film.
A vertical launch
Here’s the detail that has fans excited. Once riders board, a lift will raise the whole train about 40 feet in roughly four seconds. Then the coaster launches forward into the door vault.
What Opens First in Monstropolis
At D23 in August 2026, Disney confirmed Monstropolis will open in phases. Parts of the land open in 2027, while work continues on the coaster.
Here’s what’s coming in that first phase:
- Glob Theater: A new show called “Welcome to Monstropolis,” hosted by Mike and Sulley, in the space that once held MuppetVision 3D. It features a brand-new song by Randy Newman.
- Harryhausen’s: A table-service restaurant that includes an Audio-Animatronics sushi chef.
- Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza: Quick-service dining.
- Monsters University Alumni Club: A space next door to Archie’s that welcomes guests dining there.
- Scareporium: The land’s shop.
Disney hasn’t announced exact 2027 opening dates for any of these locations.
When Will the Coaster Open?
Disney hasn’t given a date. Most fan sites expect the coaster in 2028, and WDWMAGIC lists a 2028 opening. But that’s an expectation based on construction pace, not an official announcement from Disney.
What This Means for Your Trip
- Visiting in 2027? You’ll likely get to explore part of Monstropolis, see the new Glob Theater show, and eat at the new restaurants. But plan on the coaster still being closed.
- Waiting for the coaster? Look at 2028 trips, and watch for an official date before you lock anything in.
- Expect big crowds. A brand-new land with new dining will draw heavy demand when it opens. Book dining reservations the moment your window opens.
- Plan for Lightning Lane. A one-of-a-kind headliner coaster will almost certainly be one of the hardest rides in the park to get on once it opens.
The Bottom Line
The Monsters Inc Flying Door coaster has hit a major milestone, with track and support columns now installed and walls going up around the show building at Hollywood Studios. It will be Disney’s first suspended coaster, with a 40-foot vertical lift that launches riders into the door vault. Parts of Monstropolis open in 2027, but the coaster isn’t part of that first phase and still has no official date. If you’re planning a Hollywood Studios trip, set your expectations by year, and keep checking DisMornings for the next Monstropolis update.
