Now, thanks to new map overlays from CFTOD, we have the first real look at the ride building’s scale, placement, and footprint.

The Size: 103,000 Square Feet of Screams

That makes this Monsters Inc roller coaster building around 11% larger than Rise of the Resistance (which is around 92,000 square feet). It’s also bigger than buildings housing Avatar: Flight of Passage and TRON Lightcycle Run.

At Walt Disney World, the only attraction building currently larger is the one used for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT—and that ride is the longest indoor coaster in the world.

So yeah, Disney is going big.

Ride Type: Disney’s First Suspended Coaster

Here’s what makes this ride extra interesting: it will be Disney’s first-ever suspended roller coaster.

That means riders will hang below the track, similar to other inverted coaster models found at different theme parks—but themed to the wild, chaotic ride through the door vault scene from Monsters Inc.

A ride like this takes serious space. Think of the large show scenes. Think of the elevation changes. Think of the number of swinging door track paths Imagineering could use to recreate that iconic scene.

And that explains the size of the building. It’s not just about housing a track—it’s about creating giant, open, multi-story environments to bring the vault to life.

Where the Building Will Go

According to the CFTOD site plans, the building will sit fully in the backstage Cast Member parking lot, behind the current Muppets Courtyard area.

That location is tucked far behind Galaxy’s Edge, near—but not adjacent to—Rise of the Resistance.

So if you’re wondering if the building will stick out inside the park, here’s the good news: it probably won’t. Disney will likely use forced perspective and themed design elements to keep the building “invisible” from within the guest areas of Hollywood Studios.

But from outside the park, especially from roadways or nearby resorts, expect to see a massive, flat box painted in shades of blue and green, similar to how the Guardians and TRON buildings are camouflaged.

What We Don’t Know Yet

One thing that’s still unclear is whether this massive building will include the queue and pre-show areas or if it’s only meant to house the coaster itself.

If it’s like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind or Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster, then the queue and pre-show may take place in smaller buildings within the new Monstropolis land, with the actual coaster loading and launching in the larger building backstage.

Disney legend Jim Shull previously mentioned the ride will have two launch points/lift hills, which supports the idea of a dynamic, multi-phase coaster layout.

Potential Impacts to the Park

So what does this mean for the rest of Hollywood Studios?

Here’s the likely rundown:

• MuppetVision 3D and nearby areas are being replaced to make way for the new land.
• Star Tours remains untouched, at least for now.
• The new building sits far enough from Galaxy’s Edge that it won’t interfere with current operations.
