Monstropolis Playground Permit Points to a New Play Area

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Monstropolis, the Monsters, Inc. land at Hollywood Studios

Little monsters are getting a place to play. A new permit suggests a Monstropolis playground is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Walt Disney Imagineering filed a Notice of Commencement for work at an address that points to the former Stage 1 Company Store location. The listed contractor is Landscape Structures, Inc., a commercial playground manufacturer. The scope is listed as general construction.

That contractor is the key detail. Landscape Structures builds playgrounds, and it’s the same company working on play areas at Tropical Americas, the new land coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Disney’s own concept art for Monstropolis also appears to show a play zone under colorful shade canopies.

Disney hasn’t officially announced a playground. But the clues point pretty clearly in one direction. Here’s what we know and what it could mean for families.

Quick Summary

  • New permit: WDI filed a Notice of Commencement tied to the former Stage 1 Company Store location.
  • Contractor: Landscape Structures, Inc., a commercial playground manufacturer.
  • Same builder: Landscape Structures is also working on play areas at Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom.
  • Concept art: Disney’s art appears to show a play zone with colorful shade canopies.
  • Not confirmed: Disney hasn’t officially announced a Monstropolis playground.
  • Timing: Parts of Monstropolis open in 2027.

What the Monstropolis Playground Permit Shows

The permit was filed by Walt Disney Imagineering, which usually means guest-facing work. The address resolves to the former Stage 1 Company Store, a shop that sat in the old Muppets Courtyard area before Monstropolis construction began.

The listed contractor is Landscape Structures, Inc. Companies like this design and build commercial play equipment: climbing structures, slides, and themed play elements. When a playground maker shows up on a Disney permit, a play area is the most logical explanation.

The scope is listed simply as “general construction,” which doesn’t tell us much on its own. The contractor is doing most of the talking here.

The Concept Art Clue

Disney’s previously released concept art for Monstropolis appears to show what looks like a play zone under colorful shade canopies. That lines up with a playground permit.

Concept art isn’t a promise. Disney often changes details between early art and the finished land. But when the art and the permit point the same way, it’s a strong sign.

The Tropical Americas Connection

Landscape Structures is also attached to playground work at Tropical Americas, the new land under construction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

That tells us two things. First, Disney is actively adding play areas to its newest lands. Second, it’s using the same trusted builder across parks. Families with young kids have lost some play spaces at Walt Disney World over the years, so new ones in two upcoming lands would be a welcome change.

What We Know About Monstropolis

Monstropolis is the new Monsters, Inc. land replacing the former Muppets Courtyard area at Hollywood Studios. Disney confirmed at D23 in August 2026 that parts of the land will open in 2027, while work continues on its headline coaster.

Here’s what’s coming:

  • The Monsters Inc Flying Door coaster: Disney’s first suspended coaster, with a vertical lift that launches riders into the door vault. Disney has said it won’t open with the rest of the land in 2027.
  • The Glob Theater: A new show called “Welcome to Monstropolis,” replacing MuppetVision 3D.
  • Harryhausen’s: A table-service restaurant.
  • Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza: Quick-service dining.
  • The Scareporium: The land’s shop.

A play area would round that out nicely. Monsters, Inc. is a family-friendly story, and the land is likely to draw a lot of guests with younger kids.

Why a Playground Makes Sense at Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios is heavy on thrill rides and big shows. Rise of the Resistance, Tower of Terror, and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster are huge draws, but they leave younger kids waiting on the sidelines.

A play area gives toddlers and preschoolers a place to burn off energy while older siblings ride. It also gives parents a break. That’s a real gap in this park, and a Monstropolis playground would help fill it.

What This Means for Your Trip

  • Nothing changes yet. This is a permit, not an announcement, and there’s no opening date for a playground.
  • Plan for 2027. If you’re visiting with young kids in 2027, Monstropolis could be a great stop once it opens.
  • Expect the coaster later. Don’t plan a 2027 trip around the Flying Door coaster. Disney hasn’t announced its opening date.

The Bottom Line

A new permit filed by Walt Disney Imagineering points to a Monstropolis playground at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with playground maker Landscape Structures, Inc. listed as contractor at the former Stage 1 Company Store location. The same company is building play areas at Tropical Americas, and Disney’s concept art appears to show a canopy-covered play zone. Disney hasn’t confirmed it yet, but the clues line up. Parts of Monstropolis open in 2027, so keep checking DisMornings for the official reveal.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
