Is the Tower of Terror Getting an Update? Rod Serling Voice Actor Visits WDI

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Tower of Terror Getting an Update

The voice that has welcomed guests into the Hollywood Tower Hotel since 1994 just turned up at Walt Disney Imagineering, and that has fans wondering whether the Tower of Terror is about to change. Mark Silverman, who voices Rod Serling in the ride’s preshow, shared on Instagram that he was back at WDI in Glendale. When a follower asked whether guests would hear something new from him, his answer was short: “well…. could be.”

That’s not an announcement. But it’s enough to raise a fair question, so let’s look at what we actually know.

Quick Summary

  • Mark Silverman, the voice of Rod Serling on the Tower of Terror since its July 1994 opening, posted that he was back at Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale.
  • Asked if fans would hear something new from him, he replied “well…. could be.”
  • Disney has not announced any changes to the ride’s story, preshow, or audio.
  • Separately, scaffolding has gone up around part of the Hollywood Tower Hotel exterior for a project at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
  • Nothing about the visit is confirmed, so treat any “update” talk as speculation for now.

Who Is Mark Silverman?

If you’ve ridden the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you’ve heard Mark Silverman, even if you didn’t know his name. Rod Serling, the creator and host of The Twilight Zone, died in 1975, nearly two decades before the attraction opened. Imagineers needed someone who could deliver Serling’s clipped, unmistakable narration, and Silverman got the job.

According to the story Silverman has told over the years, Carol Serling, Rod Serling’s widow, picked him for the role. He recorded the original narration in a single session that lasted about three hours. He later recorded new dialogue for the Disney California Adventure version of the attraction, which ran until it was rethemed to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! in 2017.

How the Preshow Works Today

The library preshow blends Silverman’s new narration with real footage of Rod Serling taken from the Twilight Zone episode “It’s a Good Life.” Serling appears on screen, the lightning strikes, and his voice (actually Silverman’s) sets up the story of the five guests who vanished from the hotel’s elevator on a stormy night in 1939.

That combination has barely changed in decades. The ride system got its randomized drop profiles years ago, but the preshow, the boiler room queue, and the narration are essentially what guests heard in the 1990s. That consistency is part of why the attraction is so beloved. It’s also why any hint of new narration gets fans’ attention fast.

What Could the WDI Visit Mean?

Here’s the honest answer: nobody outside Disney knows yet. A voice actor visiting Imagineering can mean a lot of different things, and only some of them would change what you experience in the park.

A few possibilities fans have floated:

  • New audio for an existing scene. Old recordings sometimes get re-recorded or cleaned up during refurbishments, especially when audio systems are replaced.
  • A seasonal or special event overlay. Disney has used limited-time versions of attractions before, and the Tower of Terror would be an obvious candidate for a Halloween-style twist.
  • Something outside the ride itself. Recordings can end up in anniversary content, documentaries, internal projects, or other media that never touch the attraction.
  • New audio for an upcoming attraction. It’s not uncommon for Disney to use the same voice actor for multiple attractions. For example, Jim Cummings is the voice of Hondo at Millennium Falcon, and Winnie the Pooh.
  • Nothing ride-related at all. Silverman could have been at WDI for a tour, an event, or a project with no connection to the Tower.

Silverman’s “could be” doesn’t rule any of these in or out. It’s a playful non-answer, which is exactly what you’d expect from someone who either can’t say more or doesn’t want to oversell a visit.

The Scaffolding on the Hollywood Tower Hotel

The other piece of the puzzle is the scaffolding that has gone up around part of the Hollywood Tower Hotel’s exterior. The 199-foot building is a landmark at the end of Sunset Boulevard, and exterior work on a structure that size usually means painting, facade repairs, or other routine maintenance.

It’s tempting to connect the two stories, but there’s no evidence they’re related. Exterior work on an aging building doesn’t require new narration, and a narration change wouldn’t require scaffolding. Keep these two things separate until Disney says otherwise.

What This Means for Your Trip

If you’re heading to Disney’s Hollywood Studios soon, the Tower of Terror is operating, and nothing about your ride experience has been announced as changing. Plan for it the way you normally would:

  • Ride early or late. The Tower of Terror and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster sit next to each other on Sunset Boulevard, so pairing them first thing in the morning or near park close saves time.
  • Check Lightning Lane options. The attraction is part of Lightning Lane Multi Pass at Hollywood Studios, so it’s worth booking if you want to avoid the longest waits.
  • Watch the preshow closely. If you’re a fan, pay attention to the library scene on your next visit. If anything does change, that’s where you’ll hear it first.

If the scaffolding expands or the ride goes down for a refurbishment, we’ll update you, since that would affect trip plans more than any audio change.

The Bottom Line

A short Instagram reply from Mark Silverman, the longtime voice of Rod Serling on the Tower of Terror, has fans hoping for something new at the Hollywood Tower Hotel. Right now, that’s all it is: a visit to Imagineering and a “could be.” Disney hasn’t announced new narration, a refurbishment, or a story change, and the exterior scaffolding looks like a separate project. It’s worth keeping an eye on, but don’t change your plans over it. When Disney confirms what Silverman was recording, if anything, we’ll let you know.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
