Limited-edition Butterbeer mug for Back to Hogwarts 25th Anniversary

Twenty-five years of Harry Potter films, and there’s a mug to prove it. Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood are celebrating the anniversary with the return of Back to Hogwarts, running August 1 through September 1.

The Back to Hogwarts 25th anniversary celebration brings limited-time experiences to both coasts, including a limited-edition Butterbeer mug in Orlando and a Monster Book of Monsters encounter in Hollywood.

Here’s what’s happening at each resort and what to prioritize.

Quick Summary

  • Back to Hogwarts runs August 1 through September 1 at both resorts
  • The celebration marks 25 years of the Harry Potter film franchise
  • Universal Orlando gets a limited-edition Butterbeer mug while supplies last
  • Hogwarts Always nighttime projection show returns in Wizarding World – Hogsmeade
  • Universal Studios Hollywood adds a Monster Book of Monsters encounter and house-themed giveaways
  • Both resorts get a park-exclusive Build-A-Bag collection by Lug

At Universal Orlando

Guests can commemorate the anniversary with a limited-edition Butterbeer mug, available while supplies last, along with specialty food and beverage offerings throughout The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The fan-favorite Hogwarts Always nighttime projection show will also return in Wizarding World – Hogsmeade.

The Butterbeer Mug Is the Priority

“While supplies last” on a 25th anniversary Butterbeer mug means this sells out. Anniversary drinkware in the Wizarding World has a strong track record of disappearing within the first week or two of a promotion.

If you want one, go in the first few days of August. Waiting until late in the month is how people end up disappointed.

Hogwarts Always Is Worth Planning Around

Hogwarts Always is the nighttime projection show on Hogwarts Castle, and it’s one of the best things Universal Orlando does.

The castle projection format — light, music, and imagery mapped onto the actual structure — works better here than almost anywhere because Hogwarts Castle is already the most impressive piece of architecture in the park.

Practical notes: it runs after dark, which in August in Orlando means late. Check show times when you arrive, position yourself in Hogsmeade with a clear castle sightline, and expect crowds.

At Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood will introduce new experiences, including:

  • An encounter with the Monster Book of Monsters
  • Hogwarts house-themed giveaways
  • Specialty treats
  • Additional limited-time offerings throughout the land

The Monster Book of Monsters encounter is the standout. It’s a beloved prop from Prisoner of Azkaban with genuine character — a snarling, snapping textbook — and building an interactive encounter around it is a smart use of a deep-cut fan favorite.

House-themed giveaways are also worth arriving early for. Free items tied to Hogwarts houses attract exactly the audience that will queue for them.

The Lug Build-A-Bag Collection

Guests visiting either resort will have the opportunity to purchase a new park-exclusive Build-A-Bag collection by Lug, allowing fans to customize their own Wizarding World-inspired bag with accessories.

The collection lets guests personalize a bag with interchangeable straps, zipper pulls, charms, and coin pouches, themed to one of the four Hogwarts houses — Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin — or to Wizarding World icons like the Golden Snitch, Hedwig, and the Sorting Hat.

Every bag features a black quilted exterior with an embroidered Hogwarts crest, a front attachment point for charms, and a built-in wand holder.

Bag styles and pricing:

  • Hogwarts Catamaran Tote — $90
  • Hogwarts Starboard Bag — $80
  • Hogwarts Skeeter Bag — $75
  • Hogwarts Huggie Water Bottle Bag — $55

Accessories sold separately:

  • Bag Strap — $25
  • Coin Pouch — $35
  • Zipper Pull — $19
  • Bag Charm — $19

Note that the accessories add up fast. A $75 bag plus a strap, a coin pouch, and two charms lands you at $157. Budget accordingly if you plan to customize meaningfully.

The built-in wand holder is the genuinely useful feature. If you’re doing interactive wand spellcasting across Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, having somewhere to put the wand that isn’t your back pocket matters more than it sounds.

What Back to Hogwarts Actually Is

The annual Back to Hogwarts celebration marks the beginning of a new school year in the Wizarding World, coinciding with the beginning of the real school year.

September 1 is the date the Hogwarts Express departs from Platform 9¾ in the books, which is why the celebration runs through that date rather than starting on it.

It’s one of the better recurring Universal events precisely because it has an in-world reason to exist rather than being a marketing construct.

Planning Tips

  • Go in the first week of August for the Butterbeer mug and giveaways while stock holds.
  • Check Hogwarts Always show times on arrival if you’re in Orlando.
  • August in Orlando is hot and wet. The Wizarding World has limited shade. Plan indoor breaks at Three Broomsticks or the Leaky Cauldron.
  • Both resorts have exclusive content. If you’re only visiting one, you’re not getting the full celebration.
  • Budget for the Lug accessories if the Build-A-Bag is on your list.

The Bottom Line

The Back to Hogwarts 25th anniversary celebration runs August 1 through September 1 at Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood, with a limited-edition Butterbeer mug and the return of Hogwarts Always in Orlando, a Monster Book of Monsters encounter and house-themed giveaways in Hollywood, and a park-exclusive Lug Build-A-Bag collection at both.

Go early in August for the limited items. The mug will not last the month.
