Sorcerer Hat installed at The Magic of Disney Animation building at Disney's Hollywood Studios

It happened overnight and it’s exactly as iconic as you’d hope. The oversized Sorcerer Hat is now installed at The Magic of Disney Animation building at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, completing one of the most anticipated exterior details of the entire Animation Courtyard transformation. Disney fans woke up to a completely different skyline in that corner of the park.

The blue hat — modeled after the iconic hat Mickey Mouse wears in Fantasia — is now standing tall at the building’s entrance, complete with the crescent moon and stars that made it so recognizable in the 1940 film. If you’ve been watching the construction progress on this building, this is the moment it all comes together visually.

There’s still no opening date for The Magic of Disney Animation building itself, but the exterior is now complete. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Sorcerer Hat Returns to Hollywood Studios

If you were at Hollywood Studios between 2001 and 2015, you remember the original Sorcerer’s Hat structure that dominated the park’s central hub. It was polarizing — some loved it, some thought it blocked the view of the Chinese Theatre — but it became genuinely iconic over its 14-year run.

This new Sorcerer Hat isn’t a replacement for that structure. It’s a different incarnation — scaled to sit atop The Magic of Disney Animation building rather than standing as a freestanding centerpiece in the middle of the park. It’s positioned above the building’s entry canopy, working as part of the building’s identity rather than a standalone landmark.

The design details are sharp. The signature crescent moon and stars from Fantasia are clearly visible. The blue finish reads well against the building’s new cream and beige exterior. It looks like it was always meant to be there — which is the best thing you can say about any new addition to a Disney park.

The Magic of Disney Animation Building: New Look

The building’s exterior got a full repaint as part of this transformation, moving to a cream and beige color scheme with decorative accent bands. It’s a clean, studio-lot aesthetic that fits the broader Walt Disney Studios courtyard theme Disney is building out in this part of Hollywood Studios.

Combined with the multicolored pavement sections in the courtyard, the landscaping, and the Grauman’s-style character handprints embedded in the concrete, this whole area is shaping up to be one of the most detail-rich additions Hollywood Studios has seen in years.

What’s Inside: Every Experience Coming to The Magic of Disney Animation

No opening date has been announced for the building’s interior yet, but Disney has confirmed the full lineup of experiences coming. Here’s what’s planned:

Olaf Draws!

This is a reimagining of the beloved Animation Academy, now hosted by an Audio-Animatronics Olaf alongside real Disney animators. Guests will get hands-on drawing instruction in the same format as the original — sitting down, following along, leaving with a finished sketch. The Olaf framing is a smart update that keeps the experience fresh while preserving what made Animation Academy so memorable.

Enchanted Art Gallery

A curated art space where Disney characters spring to life. The exact format hasn’t been fully detailed, but the name suggests an immersive gallery experience that goes beyond static displays. This has the potential to be genuinely spectacular if Disney leans into the technology side of bringing artwork to life.

Once Upon A Studio Theater

A dedicated theater showing the Emmy Award-winning Once Upon a Studio short film with enhanced effects. That film brought together 543 Disney animated characters in one frame to celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary — seeing it in a purpose-built theater with added effects sounds like a must-do. The short itself is only about 8 minutes, but it’s an emotional gut-punch every time.

Drawn to Wonderland Playground

An indoor play area for younger kids inspired by Alice in Wonderland concept art from Disney Legend Mary Blair. Mary Blair’s distinctive flat, colorful style defined the visual identity of “it’s a small world” and numerous Disney films. A playground built around her Wonderland artwork is a beautiful way to introduce her legacy to a new generation of guests.

Character Greetings

Multiple meet-and-greet locations are planned inside the building. Specific characters haven’t been officially confirmed yet, but given the building’s animation focus, expect Disney animation royalty — likely characters tied to the experiences above.

What’s Already Confirmed for May 26

While The Magic of Disney Animation building waits for its opening date, the surrounding Walt Disney Studios courtyard and Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! are both confirmed for May 26, 2026. That’s also the opening date for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, making it the biggest single-day opening event Hollywood Studios has had in a while.

The courtyard itself will feature character handprints, footprints, and signatures in the concrete — Grauman’s Chinese Theatre-style, with Cinderella, Mufasa, Simba, Maui, Moana, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and Stitch all represented.

Sorcerer Hat at Hollywood Studios: The Bottom Line

The Sorcerer Hat installation at The Magic of Disney Animation building is a genuinely exciting development for Hollywood Studios. The exterior is now complete and looks fantastic — the hat, the new paint job, and the surrounding courtyard work together as a cohesive vision.

The building’s interior experiences don’t have an opening date yet, but when they do open, this area is going to become one of the top destinations in the park. Keep an eye on Disney’s official announcements for the opening date. In the meantime, May 26 is your target date — the courtyard opens, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster opens, and Hollywood Studios gets a major upgrade in one day.
