Hey Disney Vacationers! If you’ve been to Disney’s Hollywood Studios anytime in the last decade, you probably walked through Animation Courtyard and wondered what its future held. The space—once home to a thriving animation tour, then a Star Wars meet-and-greet zone—has felt stuck in the past. But now, Disney’s officially pulling back the curtain.
The news is big: Star Wars Launch Bay and the entire Animation Courtyard are being reimagined into a brand-new experience called The Walt Disney Studios, anchored by a hands-on, family-friendly attraction called The Magic of Disney Animation. And yes—the Sorcerer Hat is making a comeback.
Let’s break down everything you need to know about this transformation, especially if you’re planning a trip in 2026 or beyond.
What’s Replacing Animation Courtyard at Hollywood Studios?
Starting September 25, 2025, Disney will begin closing down the Animation Courtyard area of Hollywood Studios—including Disney Jr. Play and Dance! and Star Wars Launch Bay—to make way for a newly themed land: The Walt Disney Studios.
This reimagined area is inspired by the actual Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California. The new anchor experience will be a creative, character-filled interactive walkthrough called The Magic of Disney Animation, scheduled to open in late 2026.

What Is “The Magic of Disney Animation”?
This isn’t just a nostalgia trip. It’s a full-on immersive storytelling playground designed to bring the art and whimsy of Disney animation to life.
Here’s what Disney has shared so far:
- The Storyline: The animators have stepped out, but the characters have come to life—and taken over the studio!
- Interactive Areas: Explore reimagined animation departments, meet characters, and watch animated portraits come to life (just like in Once Upon a Studio).
- Short Film Theater: Expect a twist on traditional animation screenings.
- Learn to Draw: Hands-on animation stations where you can sketch a Disney character.
- “Drawn to Wonderland” Playground: A whimsical indoor space for young kids, inspired by Mary Blair’s Alice in Wonderland concept art.
And topping it all off? Mickey’s Sorcerer Hat, perched atop the show building, bringing back some major early-2000s park vibes.
What Else Is Coming to The Walt Disney Studios Area?
This won’t just be one attraction—it’s a full transformation of the Animation Courtyard zone:
| Current Location | New Experience (Coming 2026) |
|---|---|
| Star Wars Launch Bay | The Magic of Disney Animation |
| Animation Courtyard | The Walt Disney Studios land |
| Studio Theater (still showing Little Mermaid) | Remains open, now part of the new Studios area |
| Disney Jr. Play & Dance! | Closing Sept 25, 2025, to make way for a refreshed show |
Expect lush landscaping, interactive moments, and lots of character meet-and-greets spread throughout the courtyard. Disney also teased “surprises in the trees and grass,” so keep your eyes open when strolling the new grounds.
Additionally, Disney will be removing the iconic Hollywood Studios arch to improve guest flow through the area. According to Jim Hill, of The Disney Dish Podcast, Disney Imagineering is also removing the arch to make the centerpiece of the area of replica of the Burbank Animation Studio sign and area. It will feel like you’re walking up the current Disney Animation building in California.
Why This Is a Full Circle Moment for Disney Fans
If you’ve been visiting the parks since the ’90s or early 2000s, this update hits deep.
Back in the day, Animation Courtyard was home to The Magic of Disney Animation, an actual working studio that helped bring movies like The Lion King, Mulan, and Lilo & Stitch to life. Guests would tour behind-the-scenes and watch real animators at work.
The new version honors that past—but flips the script. Now it’s the characters running the studio, and you get to be part of the creative fun.
And yes—this time, the Sorcerer Hat returns as a permanent feature. It’s a replica of the Roy E. Disney Animation Building in California, not the controversial former park icon—but it’s still a nostalgic nod.
Key Dates and Timeline
- Sept 25, 2025 – Star Wars Launch Bay and Disney Jr. Play and Dance! will close.
- Late 2026 – The Walt Disney Studios area is expected to open, featuring The Magic of Disney Animation and more.
- Possibly early 2027 – If delays occur, Disney may open this experience alongside the upcoming Monsters Inc. land on the other side of the park for crowd balancing.
What’s Staying Open During Construction?
Not everything is going behind walls. During the reimagining:
- The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure at Studio Theater will remain open.
- Walt Disney Presents (featuring exhibits and a film about Walt’s legacy) will continue to operate.
So you’ll still have some options if you’re visiting in late 2025 or early 2026 during the construction phase.
Real Experience + Park Strategy Insight
As someone who’s stepped into Animation Courtyard more times than I can count—watching its slow fade from creative hub to underused photo-op zone—this feels like a long-overdue move.
From a trip planning perspective, this change is worth watching closely for a few reasons:
- Families with kids: Expect this to become a go-to zone, much like Dumbo’s play area in Fantasyland or the new Moana area at EPCOT.
- Rainy day bonus: Indoor play spaces and hands-on activities = gold during summer storms.
- Rope Drop Strategy: When it opens, this won’t be a rush-to-first thing like Rise of the Resistance—but it will be a must-see mid-morning stop or just after lunch.

A Look Back: Animation Courtyard’s Roots
Disney offered a subtle prelude to this change on June 26, 2025, when they posted a throwback to Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida—the studio that once filled this space with real-deal animation magic.
The grand opening of that studio? April 22, 1998—the same day Animal Kingdom opened. Roy E. Disney and Michael Eisner presided over the ceremony. Legend has it that when Roy said, “If Walt likes what we’re doing, he brings the good weather,” the wind stopped and the sun broke through. The crowd erupted. Classic Disney magic.
Over the years, the Florida team helped animate Mulan, Brother Bear, and more. That legacy still echoes through the building today, now home to the Disney Parks Blog team.
This new reimagining pays tribute to that creative history, while making the space something today’s guests—especially kids—can explore, play in, and remember.
Final Thoughts: Is This a Good Move?
Absolutely.
Hollywood Studios has needed more family-friendly, hands-on, non-screen-based experiences for a while now. The new Walt Disney Studios area brings heart, nostalgia, and interactivity in a way that balances the action-heavy attractions like Rise of the Resistance, Tower of Terror, and Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster.
If you’re planning a trip for late 2026 or 2027, keep an eye on this space. The reimagined Animation Courtyard may just become one of the most charming and creative corners of the park.
