Universal Horror Unleashed Chicago

Horror fans, buckle up—Universal just dropped some serious news. Universal Destinations & Experiences has officially confirmed the second-ever Universal Horror Unleashed location, and it’s heading straight to Chicago. That’s right, for the first time, the Midwest is getting its own permanent, year-round haunted experience powered by Universal’s horror legacy. If you’re into things that go bump in the night (and love a good themed cocktail while you’re at it), this is the attraction you’ve been waiting for.

Let’s break down exactly what you can expect from Universal Horror Unleashed Chicago—and why this might be one of the biggest additions to Chicago’s entertainment scene in years.

What Is Universal Horror Unleashed Chicago?

Universal Horror Unleashed is Universal’s newest brand of year-round, indoor horror attractions. Think haunted house meets immersive entertainment district—except it never shuts down at the end of October.

The first location opens in Las Vegas on August 14, 2025. Now, Universal has announced a second venue, and this time it’s coming to the Windy City, officially marking Universal’s first permanent branded experience in the Midwest.

This new venue will be located at 700 W. Chicago Avenue, in a 114,000-square-foot former Tribune Distribution Center. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it sits right across from Bally’s Casino, tucked between the River North and West Town neighborhoods.

Why Chicago?

Universal made it clear—Chicago checked every box.

  • Massive tourism draw
  • High population density
  • Vibrant entertainment scene
  • Large conference and event destination

According to Universal, the Chicago site will be a “world-class horror attraction and entertainment destination.” They’re not just dropping in some fog machines and calling it a night. This is a full-on transformation of a dormant site into something built to give guests chills all year long.

And yes, the city and state are all in.

“This is exactly the kind of creative, high-impact investment we’re working to attract,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

“Universal’s decision to make such a significant investment in Illinois is a testament to the state’s unmatched entertainment sector,” added Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

What Will Be Inside Universal Horror Unleashed Chicago?

While exact themes haven’t been revealed, here’s what we know:

  • Year-Round Haunted Mazes
Designed with Universal’s horror storytelling in mind, expect rotating themes, detailed sets, and some of the best scare tactics in the game.
  • Themed Bars and Bites
Craft cocktails. Ghoulish snacks. Think horror-themed lounge vibes you can’t find anywhere else.
  • Exclusive Retail
Horror fans will be able to shop collectible merch that you can’t grab in parks—making this a hotspot for collectors.
  • Live Entertainment
Expect unique horror experiences that go beyond mazes—live actors, performances, and more.

It’s built as a weather-proof indoor attraction, which means whether it’s snowing sideways in January or hot and sticky in July, the scares will keep coming.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

This isn’t just good for horror fans—it’s a huge win for Chicago’s economy.

  • $1 billion in projected economic impact
  • 400+ permanent jobs expected to be created

That’s a serious boost, especially for an area that’s been underutilized. The project also brings new life to a site that’s been sitting empty for years.

When Will It Open?

Universal has announced that construction is set to begin in early 2026 following design finalization and permitting. That means we’re probably looking at a 2027 opening date.

In the meantime, fans can look toward the Las Vegas location, which opens in August 2025, for a taste of what’s coming.

How Does This Compare to the Vegas Version?

Both Universal Horror Unleashed locations are built on the same core concept—year-round scares—but each will likely lean into its local scene. Las Vegas is inside AREA15, a nightlife-heavy complex. Chicago is shaping up to feel more like a standalone horror campus—maybe even bigger in size and scope.

Universal hasn’t confirmed if both locations will have shared themes or if Chicago will get its own set of custom stories and mazes, but based on their track record, you can expect some crossover and some city-specific surprises.

Final Thoughts: Why You Should Be Hyped

This is a big deal. Universal Horror Unleashed Chicago isn’t just a haunted house—it’s a statement. It’s a sign that Universal is betting big on immersive horror, and they’re willing to go beyond theme parks to do it.

It gives horror fans in the Midwest something permanent, something world-class, and something you can experience 12 months a year. And with the location sitting in the middle of Chicago’s entertainment corridor, it’s going to be a huge draw for locals and tourists alike.

If you’ve ever wished Halloween never ended, Universal Horror Unleashed Chicago just made your wish come true.
