The Electric Mayhem is doing a Christmas show, and Disney named it Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets: Obligatory Holiday Overlay.
That title is the funniest thing Disney has put on an attraction marquee in years, and it tells you exactly how seriously this overlay takes itself. It runs November 4 through January 6 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Quick Summary
- Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets gets a holiday overlay from November 4 through January 6
- The overlay is called “Obligatory Holiday Overlay,” which is the joke and the name
- Festive music plays in the courtyard around the guitar marquee before you even get in line
- Gonzo and Rizzo appear in a new holiday pre-show
- Inside G-Force Records, Dr. Teeth, Animal, Floyd, Janice, Zoot, and Lips are deep in holiday rehearsals
- Other Muppets stop by to help, and the rehearsals do not go to plan
- Four new holiday tracks, with guest vocals from Jennifer Hudson and Cyndi Lauper
The Name Is the Whole Joke
“Obligatory Holiday Overlay” is a Muppets gag aimed squarely at theme park fans. Seasonal overlays are a known quantity at this point — a ride gets some garland, a few bells get layered into the soundtrack, and it runs for eight weeks. Naming it “obligatory” is the Muppets acknowledging the convention out loud before doing it anyway.
That is exactly the register The Muppets work in, and it is a good sign for the overlay itself. A production willing to make the joke in its own title is probably not going to phone in the rest.
It Starts in the Courtyard
The holiday treatment begins outside the attraction. Festive music plays in the courtyard around the guitar marquee, which means the overlay reaches you before you commit to a wait time.
That is a smarter choice than it sounds. Courtyard audio is the cheapest possible part of an overlay and the part most guests actually experience, including the ones who walk past without riding. It also makes the queue feel like part of the show rather than a holding pen.
Inside G-Force Records
The main scene puts the band in holiday rehearsals inside G-Force Records. The full Electric Mayhem lineup is there:
- Dr. Teeth
- Animal
- Floyd
- Janice
- Zoot
- Lips
Other Muppets stop by to lend a hand, and the rehearsals do not go exactly to plan. Disney’s own framing — and the only correct framing — is that this is very on-brand for The Electric Mayhem.
A band that cannot get through a rehearsal is better comedy than a band nailing it, and it gives the overlay a reason to exist beyond decorations.
The Set List
Four new holiday tracks, and the guest list is the surprise:
- Holiday Road — The Electric Mayhem ft. Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear
- Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) — The Electric Mayhem ft. Jennifer Hudson
- Silver Bells — The Electric Mayhem ft. Cyndi Lauper
- Little Saint Nick — The Electric Mayhem ft. The Electric Mayhem
Two things worth flagging here.
“Holiday Road” is not a Christmas song. It is the National Lampoon’s Vacation theme — a road trip song, not a holiday standard. Putting it first, with Kermit and Fozzie, is a genuinely odd and funny choice that fits the “obligatory” framing perfectly.
“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” with Jennifer Hudson is the swing for the fences. That song is one of the hardest vocal performances in the Christmas canon, and Hudson is one of the few people alive who can take it on without embarrassing herself. That is not a novelty casting.
Cyndi Lauper on “Silver Bells” is the most purely delightful item on the list. Disney also released a photo of Miss Piggy posing with Lauper, which suggests the promotional push around this is bigger than a typical overlay gets.
Practical Notes
- Dates: November 4 through January 6
- Location: Disney’s Hollywood Studios
- Disney has not announced whether the overlay affects ride wait times or Lightning Lane availability
- No word on whether overlay-specific merchandise is coming
- The overlay spans Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s — all three of the busiest stretches at Hollywood Studios
That last point is the planning note. A January 6 end date means the overlay outlasts the holiday crowds by a few days, so the first week of January is the quietest window to experience it.
The Bottom Line
A new pre-show with Gonzo and Rizzo, the full Electric Mayhem rehearsing badly, and four holiday tracks including Jennifer Hudson on one of the toughest Christmas songs ever recorded.
Calling it the “Obligatory Holiday Overlay” is the sort of self-aware joke that only works if the thing underneath it is good. On the evidence Disney has shared, it probably is.
