Hey Disney Vacationers! Disney has taken the first big step in the Muppets retheme of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. As of December 1, 2025, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster pre show featuring Aerosmith is permanently closed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The coaster itself is still operating for now, but Imagineering has started early work to convert the space ahead of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring The Muppets, which is set to open in Summer 2026.
Quick Summary: Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster pre show
- The Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster pre show closed on December 1, 2025.
- Disney closed the pre show to begin converting it into a Muppets-themed recording studio.
- The new pre show will feature Electric Mayhem, Scooter, and Penguins as audio engineers.
- The coaster remains open for now with the Aerosmith soundtrack still in place.
- Disney has not announced a full closure date, but the Muppets version is scheduled to open Summer 2026.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Pre Show Closes Permanently
Disney confirmed that the Aerosmith pre show is now gone for good. This closure gives Imagineers full access to the pre show room so they can build out the new Muppets-themed experience.
In the updated scene, guests will step into a recording studio where Electric Mayhem is in the middle of a jam session. Scooter tries to get the band to stop playing and head out to meet their fans. Meanwhile, a group of Penguins runs the audio equipment. The setup fits The Muppets perfectly: the fans are waiting, the schedule is falling apart, and Scooter is trying to hold everything together.
Even with the pre show closed, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster pre show change does not affect the ride’s current operation. The coaster is still open, and guests will continue to hear the Aerosmith soundtrack until Disney moves into the next phase of work.
What Guests Will Experience Right Now
If you visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios today and ride Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, the biggest change you’ll notice is how the queue flows. Guests now walk straight through the former pre show area without stopping to watch the video.
Cast Members direct guests past the studio doors and into the alley that leads to the load station. This can make the line feel like it moves a bit faster, since there is no longer a pause for the pre show. Once you board, the ride layout, launch, and overall experience remain the same for now.
A Look Back at the Aerosmith Pre Show
For many guests, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster pre show was one of the most memorable parts of the attraction. The scene featured Aerosmith inside a recording studio, with Steven Tyler and the band reacting to fans and inviting everyone to join them at a concert across town.
The famous “stretch limo” line, the last-minute call to the driver, and the infamous ‘make a super stretch’ line. That pre-show had been part of the attraction since it opened in 1999, so closing it marks the end of a long-running piece of Hollywood Studios history.
How This Fits Into the Muppets Retheme
Disney has not announced the exact date when Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will close for its full transformation. However, this pre show closure fits the pattern we’ve seen before with other fast rethemes.
When Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure transitioned to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, most of the work took place in the queue, pre show, and load areas. The ride system remained the same, and much of the theming work happened while the structure stayed intact. That project took about five months from closure to reopening, which is quick for a major attraction refresh.
The current steps suggest Disney is following a similar path here. By closing the pre show first, Imagineering can start building out the Muppets story while keeping the coaster open through key seasons. Based on patterns in past years, the earliest likely full closure window would be after runDisney Marathon Weekend, but Disney has not confirmed that.
What Might Change Inside the Ride
Right now, Disney has confirmed the track will not change. But the show scenes inside the ride, beyond the obvious shift in soundtrack have not be confirmed any changes. The ride layout itself will remain the same. The big known change will be the move away from Aerosmith music to something centered on Electric Mayhem.
The open questions come down to the visual side. The ride currently uses Los Angeles freeway theming, billboards, and quick flashes of city elements. That structure could remain in place and simply pick up a Muppets overlay. Disney could refresh the billboards, lighting, or props to match the band rushing to their concert.
Even if Disney chooses to change the interior visuals, most of that work can happen during shorter downtime windows or overnight cycles. Since Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is a dark ride-style coaster, Disney can often do more with audio, light, and projection changes without rebuilding the entire interior.
How Much Work Happens Before the Full Closure
The closure of the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster pre show supports the idea that a large portion of the retheme will take place outside of the actual track area. The queue, pre show, and load spaces are where The Muppets can have the most impact on story and tone.
By handling these areas first, Disney can:
- Set up the Electric Mayhem recording studio and pre show story.
- Update theming in the queue to match The Muppets.
- Prepare the load and unload spaces for the new version.
Then, during a shorter full closure, Disney can focus on the remaining interior work and the soundtrack swap.
My Thoughts
I’ve said before that the majority of the shift from Aerosmith to The Muppets would happen in the queue, pre show, and load area. This pre show closure backs that up. It tells us that Disney is serious about starting the transformation while still keeping the coaster available during the transition.
What interests me most now is what happens inside the building once Disney finally pauses operations. Do they keep the LA “drive” feeling and layer Muppets gags over it? Do they reframe the billboards so they feel like rush-to-the-show moments with Electric Mayhem? Do the Penguins appear anywhere beyond the pre show?
We still have a lot to learn, since Disney has not released interior concept art for the updated ride yet. But the pre show closure is the first clear sign that the project is moving from announcement into active work.
Final Thoughts
The Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster pre show closing on December 1, 2025, marks the end of the Aerosmith era and the beginning of the Muppets era at this Hollywood Studios coaster. The attraction remains open for now, but Imagineering is already shaping the new story behind the scenes as they build out the Electric Mayhem recording studio.
With a Summer 2026 opening window on the calendar, this pre show closure is a key step in keeping the project on track without a long-term shutdown. If you want one last ride with the full Aerosmith experience, your window is shrinking. If you’re excited for The Muppets, this is the moment where the change becomes real.
