Who Is HamiKuma?

Originally created for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Japan in 2021, HamiKuma has become one of the event’s popular original characters.

Following a successful debut last year stateside, Universal is expanding the character’s presence for this year.

That trajectory is worth appreciating. A character created for a single park’s Halloween event in Japan has, in five years, become a property Universal is deploying across its entire global theme park portfolio. That doesn’t happen by accident.

Why HamiKuma Works

HamiKuma occupies a specific niche that Halloween Horror Nights otherwise doesn’t serve well.

HHN is an adults-oriented event built on genuine horror — gore, dread, and licensed properties designed to frighten. What it historically lacks is anything approachable.

HamiKuma is cute and unsettling at the same time. He’s a bear, he’s plush, he’s merchandisable — and he’s also wrong in ways that fit an event about fear. HamiKuma will make his meet & greet debut inside the Five & Dime store during Halloween Horror Nights 35 event hours.

This is new for Orlando. Getting a dedicated indoor meet & greet location means a reliable place to find him rather than hoping to spot him wandering.

Universal Studios Hollywood

Guests can once again meet the character during select afternoon and early evening times on event nights.

Note the timing difference — Hollywood’s meets happen earlier in the evening rather than throughout event hours. Plan accordingly if he’s a priority.

Universal Horror Unleashed, Las Vegas

HamiKuma returns with an all-new live stage show performed throughout September and October.

A dedicated stage show is a significant step up from character appearances. Universal Horror Unleashed is a year-round venue rather than a seasonal park event, which gives it room for repeatable scheduled entertainment.

The Expanded Merchandise

Universal is introducing an expanded lineup of HamiKuma merchandise beginning August 24.

The Plush Backpack Is the One

Plush character backpacks have a strong track record at theme parks generally, and HamiKuma is well suited to the format — the character design is built around being soft and huggable in a way that translates directly to a wearable plush item.

Expect it to sell through. August 24 is two days before the Tribute Store opens at Universal Orlando and four days before HHN 35 begins, which means the merchandise lands right as demand peaks.
