Monstropolis is starting to look like a real place. Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a new Notice of Commencement for the Glob Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with SPI (Sign Producers Inc.) listed as the contractor and a scope of “install signage.” SPI is well-known within the theme park industry, producing many attraction marquees, including the VelociCoaster at Universal Islands of Adventure.
Permits for signage are the ones worth paying attention to. Fabrication and audio-visual filings tell you a project is being built. A signage contractor tells you the building is close enough to done that Disney is ready to put its name on the front.
Here’s what the filing says, what the Glob Theater will hold, and where this fits in a project opening in 2027.
Quick Summary
- What was filed: A Notice of Commencement from Walt Disney Imagineering for the Glob Theater
- Contractor: SPI (Sign Producers Inc.)
- Scope: Install signage
- Where: Inside the former MuppetVision 3D theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
- What it will hold: “Welcome to Monstropolis,” a new show hosted by Mike and Sulley
- Music: An original song written by Disney Legend Randy Newman
- Opening: 2027, confirmed by Disney at D23
The Facade Is Coming Into View
The filing lands as the front of the building is now largely clear of scaffolding. With the facade exposed, mounting points for signage are visible on the brickwork, positioned and ready for panels to go up.
That’s the detail that makes this permit more than paperwork. The hardware is already on the building. The marquee is the piece that finishes the look, and it’s the piece that turns a construction site into a themed storefront.
What the Glob Theater Will Be
The Glob Theater is being built inside the former MuppetVision 3D theater. It will house “Welcome to Monstropolis,” the new show hosted by Mike and Sulley, featuring an original song written by Disney Legend Randy Newman.
Randy Newman’s involvement matters more than it might sound. He scored the Toy Story films and Monsters, Inc., and his music is a big part of why those movies land emotionally. Bringing him in for an original song signals Disney is treating this as a centerpiece rather than a placeholder show.
Disney confirmed at D23 that the show, along with other parts of Monstropolis, will open to guests in 2027.
The Permit Trail So Far
This is the latest in a long list of permits filed for the building’s transformation. Previous filings have covered fabrication, audio-visual systems, and set element installation from contractors including:
- Jon Richards Company
- Solotech
- Adirondack Studios
- Icarus Exhibits
- InterAmerica Stage
- Elite A/V Systems
That list reads like a project moving through its phases in order. Structural and show systems first, then the audio-visual work that makes a theater function, then set pieces, and now exterior signage.
Why Signage Comes Last
Marquees and show signage are among the final exterior items installed on a project like this, for a practical reason: they’re easily damaged and they sit right where construction equipment needs access. Putting them up early is asking for trouble.
So a dedicated signage contractor points to the project moving into its final exterior finishing stages. Interior work typically continues well after the outside looks finished, which is why a complete facade doesn’t mean an imminent opening.
What This Means for Your Next Hollywood Studios Trip
A few practical notes:
- You can watch the progress now. With scaffolding down, the facade is visible from the walkway, and it’s worth a look as you pass through
- Don’t plan a trip around it yet. The show opens in 2027, and Disney hasn’t given a specific date
- Expect the marquee to appear in stages. Signage installation usually happens in pieces over weeks, not overnight
- Watch for more permits. Landscaping, lighting, and final theming filings typically follow signage work
If you’re visiting this fall or winter, the realistic expectation is a progressively more finished-looking building each trip, with the actual show still a way off.
Why Monstropolis Matters for Hollywood Studios
Hollywood Studios has spent the last decade adding lands, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, and most recently Walt Disney Studios rather than individual attractions, and Monstropolis continues that pattern. The park’s layout has long been its weak point, with dead ends and transitional spaces that don’t do much. Unfortunately, based on the orientation of Monstropolis, the dead ends will continue.
Converting the MuppetVision building and the area around it gives that corner of the park a purpose again. For families, a Monsters, Inc. show hosted by Mike and Sulley is exactly the kind of mid-day, air-conditioned, all-ages option the park could use more of.
What to Watch Next at Monstropolis
A few markers will tell you how close this project really is.
Signage installation is the obvious one, and it usually happens in stages rather than overnight. After that, watch for exterior lighting tests, which typically run at night and are visible from the walkway. Landscaping is another reliable tell, since Disney plants a land’s greenery late to keep it from being damaged during construction.
The last stage before an opening date gets announced is usually show testing. That means lights, audio, and effects running inside the building during operating hours, which fans tend to notice from outside long before Disney says anything.
None of those have happened yet. The marquee is the next step, and everything else follows from there.
The Bottom Line
A new WDI permit has Sign Producers Inc. installing signage at the Glob Theater, with mounting points already visible on the newly exposed facade at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
“Welcome to Monstropolis” opens in late 2027 with Mike, Sulley, as part of phase one of the land opening. The upcoming main attraction, the door coaster, will open as part of phase two in 2028. Watch the front of the building on your next visit, because the marquee is the next thing to go up.
