From Daughter to Grandmother: Original Carousel of Progress Voice Returns

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Debi Derryberry returns to Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress as Grandmother

Here is a casting note that lands differently than most casting notes.

Walt Disney Imagineering has confirmed that Debi Derryberry is returning to Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress — the same voice actress who played Patricia, the daughter, in the version of the show guests have been watching for decades. This time she is playing the Grandmother.

She did not get a bigger part. She moved up a generation.

Quick Summary

  • Debi Derryberry, who voiced Patricia the daughter, returns as Grandmother
  • WDI shared photos of her recording the new role in the studio
  • She joins Jamie Lee Curtis (Sarah) and Bryan Cranston (John), confirmed earlier this year
  • Carousel of Progress closed July 5, 2026 for its biggest overhaul since 1975
  • All four show scenes are being replaced with new time periods
  • A new opening scene will feature Walt Disney as an Audio-Animatronic figure
  • The attraction is expected to reopen at Magic Kingdom in late spring 2027

The Casting Choice Does Something Clever

Carousel of Progress is a show about time passing. The same family moves forward through the decades, the technology around them changes, and the whole conceit is that you are watching generations roll over.

Casting the actress who played the daughter as the grandmother puts that idea into the voice cast itself. It is the kind of detail most guests will never consciously notice, and the kind that makes the people who do notice it very happy.

Derryberry’s voice has been in that theater for a long time. Keeping it there, in a different chair, is a quieter form of continuity than a plaque or a tribute.

Who Else Is in the New Cast

Derryberry joins two names Disney confirmed earlier this year:

  • Jamie Lee Curtis — a Disney Legend — as Sarah
  • Bryan Cranston — Emmy winner — as John

That is a notably heavy lineup for an attraction that ran for decades on the strength of warmth rather than star power. It also tells you something about how seriously Disney is treating this rebuild.

What’s Actually Changing in the Show

Carousel of Progress closed at Magic Kingdom on July 5, 2026. This is its most significant overhaul since the show arrived in Florida in 1975 — not a refresh, a replacement of every scene.

All four show scenes are being swapped for new time periods, plus a new opening:

  • New opening scene — Walt Disney, brought to life through Audio-Animatronics technology
  • Act 1 — Summer 1969 — the family watches the Apollo moon landing
  • Act 2 — Halloween night, 1985 — Sarah takes center stage for the first time
  • Act 3 — New Year’s Eve, 1999 — the family rings in the millennium
  • Act 4 — The Future — an out-of-this-world home with a helpful robot and space travel

A Few Things Worth Sitting With

Sarah gets the spotlight. Act 2 is explicitly built around her. In the old show, John ran the room and narrated the family’s life. Shifting that even once changes the texture of the whole thing.

The time periods are now historical rather than contemporary. The previous show’s scenes were set roughly in the 1900s, 1920s, 1940s, and then a “present day” that kept aging out of relevance — which is why Act 4 has been rebuilt multiple times over the years. Picking fixed, recognizable moments like the moon landing and Y2K sidesteps that problem.

The Walt Disney opening scene is the headline for a lot of people. An Audio-Animatronic Walt is the kind of decision that generates strong opinions in both directions, and it will be judged on execution rather than concept.

When Does It Reopen?

Late spring 2027. That is Disney’s own window, and it has not moved.

For planning purposes, treat “late spring” as the operative word rather than a specific month. Attraction reopening dates shift, and a show this heavily rebuilt has more moving parts than most.

If you are booking a Magic Kingdom trip for spring 2027 and Carousel of Progress is a must-do, build in flexibility or plan around the possibility that it slips.

What We Still Don’t Know

Disney has not shared:

  • A specific reopening date
  • Whether the show’s running time changes
  • Whether “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” survives in its current arrangement
  • Who voices the Grandfather, the kids, or the robot in Act 4
  • Whether the theater’s rotating mechanism gets any work during the closure

That last one matters more than it sounds. The rotating theater is the attraction’s defining piece of hardware and the single most likely source of a delay.

The Bottom Line

Carousel of Progress is getting a real rebuild, not a touch-up, and the cast list keeps getting more interesting. Derryberry moving from daughter to grandmother is the first casting decision in this project that feels like it came from someone who genuinely loves the show.

Late spring 2027 is the target. We will keep tracking it.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

We were able to really relax and focus on quality time as a family and have so much fun doing it! I will definitely reach out for any future trips.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
