Carousel of Progress Reopens Late Spring 2027 With New Voice Cast

Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis are the new mom and dad. Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress will reopen at Magic Kingdom in late spring 2027, Disney confirmed during the “Horizons: A Carousel of Progress” showcase at D23.

The Carousel of Progress reopening comes with new concept art and two major names joining the voice cast.

Here’s every scene confirmed and where the project stands.

Quick Summary

  • Carousel of Progress reopens late spring 2027
  • Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis voice mom and dad
  • A new opening scene features an Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney
  • Act 2 gives Sarah center stage for the first time in the attraction’s history
  • The show replaces scenes in place since 1994
  • “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” continues between scenes

The Voice Cast

Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis are on board as voices for the updated show, as mom and dad.

That’s a genuinely notable pair of casting choices, and not the safe ones.

Cranston’s range is the argument. John has always been an earnest, slightly oblivious optimist — a hard tone to play without condescension. Cranston can do warmth and absurdity simultaneously, which is precisely what the role needs.

Curtis as Sarah matters more. Sarah has historically been the character reacting to John’s enthusiasm rather than driving scenes. Casting an actor of Curtis’s stature suggests the role is being expanded — and the scene list confirms it.

Every Scene Confirmed

New opening scene — An Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney, inspired by the 1964 television special *Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair*

Act 1 — Summer 1969 — The family gathers to watch the Apollo moon landing

Act 2 — Halloween night, 1985 — Sarah takes center stage for the first time in the attraction’s history

Act 3 — New Year’s Eve, 1999 — The family rings in the millennium as the internet changes everything

Act 4 — The Future — An out-of-this-world home featuring a helpful robot and space travel, inspired by original concept sketches by Disney Legend John Hench

“There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” by Richard and Robert Sherman continues between scenes.

Sarah Taking Center Stage Is the Real Change

That Act 2 detail is the most substantive thing in this announcement, and it’s easy to skim past.

In every version since 1964, John has driven the show. He addresses the audience, explains the technology, and delivers the jokes. Sarah responds. The dynamic is a product of when it was written and it has aged poorly.

Giving Sarah her own act — and casting Jamie Lee Curtis to play it — is a structural fix rather than a cosmetic one. It’s also set on Halloween night 1985, which is a genuinely fun setting for the character to lead.

The John Hench sourcing for Act 4 is the other detail worth noting. Hench was one of Walt’s closest collaborators and worked at Disney for 65 years. Building the future scene from his original sketches connects the new finale to the attraction’s own lineage rather than inventing from scratch.

Walt Disney Audio-Animatronics figure for Carousel of Progress

The Walt Disney Figure

The new opening scene features an Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney, inspired by the 1964 television special *Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair*.

Anchoring the figure to a specific 1964 broadcast is a smart framing choice. Rather than a generic Walt, it’s Walt at a documented moment, introducing the attraction he built for the World’s Fair — which is exactly what this attraction is.

The figure has drawn divided reaction since its reveal at Destination D23 in 2025. Placing it here, in the show most directly tied to Walt’s own voice about the future, is the strongest available justification.

Where Things Stand

Carousel of Progress closed at Magic Kingdom on July 5, 2026. Construction walls are in place, and permit activity has pointed to work well beyond new show scenes — including structural steel work and custom theming fabrication.

That permit detail is significant. Structural steel implies changes to the building itself, not just new figures and sets in existing scene bays.

Late spring 2027 gives Disney roughly a year to complete what is shaping up to be a near-complete transformation.

The Attraction’s Record

The attraction has been a fixture at Magic Kingdom since January 15, 1975, and holds the record as the longest-running stage show in American theater history.

Its last major update was in 1994 — meaning the scenes closing this year had run for 32 years.

For context, the show originally opened at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, moved to Disneyland in 1967, and came to Florida in 1975. It is the only attraction still operating that Walt Disney personally supervised from concept.

What This Means for a 2027 Visit

  • Late spring 2027 is the target, so trips before roughly May 2027 won’t include it
  • Construction walls are up now at Magic Kingdom
  • The Sherman Brothers song survives, which was the single biggest fan concern
  • Four acts plus an opening scene is a longer show than the current four-act structure

The Bottom Line

The Carousel of Progress reopening is set for late spring 2027 with Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis voicing mom and dad, a new Walt Disney Audio-Animatronics opening scene, and acts set at the 1969 moon landing, Halloween 1985, New Year’s Eve 1999, and a John Hench-inspired future.

Sarah takes center stage for the first time in the attraction’s history in Act 2.

“There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” continues between scenes. The attraction closed July 5, 2026 after 32 years with its previous show.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

We were able to really relax and focus on quality time as a family and have so much fun doing it! I will definitely reach out for any future trips.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
