Updated Test Track Ride Vehicles

Hey Disney Vacationers! If you’re anything like me, you’ve been waiting (not so patiently) to see what Disney had up its sleeve for the new version of Test Track. Good news—we finally got a close-up look at the updated Test Track ride vehicles, and there’s a lot to talk about.

Walt Disney Imagineering just dropped a behind-the-scenes video showing off the vehicle updates coming to EPCOT’s high-speed attraction. These aren’t brand-new ride vehicles, but they’ve been refreshed with new wraps, new seats, and new interior graphics. Let’s break it all down.

What’s New About the Updated Test Track Ride Vehicles?

The updated Test Track ride vehicles are part of the refreshed design coming to EPCOT later this year. And here’s the headline: the vehicles are not totally new—they’re existing cars (the guts) that have been rewrapped and upgraded.

According to Walt Disney Imagineering, the most visible change is the new black exterior wrap, which gives the ride a sleek, research-and-development feel. This ties into the storyline that these cars are part of a testing fleet inside a futuristic lab.

Inside the car, riders will notice:

  • New seating
  • Updated interior graphics
  • Subtle use of the General Motors logo throughout the vehicle

The new design is more toned down compared to the bright, glowing look of the last version. But don’t let that fool you—it’s still packed with tech and still promises that signature Test Track speed.

Why Disney Chose to Reuse the Test Track Vehicles

Here’s the real deal. Building all-new ride vehicles would require a massive investment. That cost would either fall on Disney or General Motors (the attraction’s sponsor), and it could trigger other changes like replacing the ride track or modifying the ride system.

That’s not a small upgrade. And that kind of overhaul would add months—maybe even years—to the downtime for Test Track.

So instead, Disney is doing what they’ve done before: refreshing the ride experience without replacing the ride system. It’s smart, cost-effective, and gets the job done faster.

This Isn’t the First Time Disney Has Reused Ride Vehicles

If the approach sounds familiar, it should.

When Disney rethemed Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, they reused the same ride logs (just with some updates). And it’s expected that the same strategy will happen with the upcoming Dinosaur to Indiana Jones retheme over in the new Tropical Americas land at Animal Kingdom.

It’s a proven strategy that lets Imagineers focus on the story and show scenes—which is exactly what’s happening here.

When Will the Updated Test Track Open at EPCOT?

Disney has said that the updated version of Test Track will open by the end of 2025. That gives Imagineers enough time to rework the show scenes, polish the ride experience, and deliver something that feels new without completely rebuilding the ride from scratch.

If you’re planning a trip in late 2025 or early 2026, get ready—because this version of Test Track will likely feel very different even though the ride vehicles are technically the same.

Final Thoughts

I’ve been riding Test Track since it opened. I remember the original crash-test dummy version, I’ve watched it evolve, and I’ve got to say—I’m excited.

Some folks might be disappointed that the Test Track ride vehicles aren’t brand new, but I think Disney made the right call. We’re getting a faster reopening and a more creative ride update without adding years of downtime.

The new seats, the new look, and the promise of fresh show scenes mean the ride is getting a real glow-up. I’m here for it—and I’ll be rope-dropping EPCOT the second it reopens.
