Magic of Disney Animation atrium courtyard first look from WDI

Three weeks out, and we finally know what the front door looks like.

Walt Disney Imagineering has shared a first look at the atrium courtyard entrance to The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, revealed in a new episode of the Pardon Our Pixie Dust series.

The building opens September 14.

Quick Summary

  • The atrium courtyard is the entry point to the whole building
  • It sits between the Walt Disney Studios courtyard outside and the experiences inside
  • Designed as a gathering space with a photo op, benches, and landscaping
  • Inspired by the real Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank
  • Robin — the animated Robin Williams from the original attraction — returns to the courtyard
  • The building opens September 14, 2026

What the Courtyard Is For

The atrium courtyard serves as a transitional space between the Walt Disney Studios courtyard outside and the experiences inside the building.

According to WDI, the space is designed for guests to gather before entering, with:

  • A photo opportunity
  • Benches for relaxing
  • Landscaping including trees, flowers, and foliage set within a colorful environment

Transitional Spaces Are Load-Bearing

Easy to dismiss a courtyard as landscaping. It isn’t, and Imagineering treats it that way for a reason.

A transition space resets your expectations before you enter. It’s the same function the Haunted Mansion’s stretching room performs, or the walk down the Tower of Terror’s overgrown drive, or Pandora’s approach through the floating mountains.

This one has a specific job: convincing you that you’ve arrived at an animation studio rather than walked into a building on a theme park street.

The practical function matters too. A building housing five separate experiences — character meets, a theater, a gallery — needs somewhere for people to congregate, wait, and sort themselves out. Benches and shade in Central Florida in September is not a small consideration.

The Burbank Connection

The space is inspired by the real Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California — specifically the Open House setting featured in Once Upon A Studio, which serves as the creative foundation for the entire Magic of Disney Animation experience.

Why That Choice Is Coherent

Once Upon A Studio was the 2023 short made for Disney Animation’s 100th anniversary, in which 543 characters from across the studio’s history gather in the actual Burbank building for a group photo.

Basing a park attraction on it is unusually well-reasoned. The short’s entire premise is that characters inhabit the real studio — so a physical space recreating that studio is the natural next step rather than a licensing exercise.

It also solves an old problem at Hollywood Studios. The original Magic of Disney Animation, which closed in 2015, was built around a working animation facility that stopped being a working animation facility. The tour became a tour of an empty building.

Basing the new version on Burbank rather than on Florida sidesteps that. It’s explicitly a representation of a studio elsewhere, so it can’t be hollowed out the same way.

Robin — And Why He Matters Here

WDI describes Robin as the character that “adds the magic” to the space.

Robin is not a character from the 1953 Peter Pan. He was created specifically for the original Magic of Disney Animation attraction — in this same building — when Disney-MGM Studios opened in 1989.

Where Robin Comes From

The original attraction opened with a pre-show film called “Back to Neverland,” starring Robin Williams and Walter Cronkite.

The premise: Cronkite walks Williams through how animation actually works — and demonstrates it by turning Robin Williams into an animated Lost Boy.

That animated Lost Boy is Robin. The character is Robin Williams, drawn.

So this isn’t an obscure Peter Pan deep cut. It’s the mascot of the attraction that stood on this exact spot for twenty-six years, brought back for its replacement.

Why This Is the Best Detail in the Announcement

The original Magic of Disney Animation ran from 1989 to 2015. For a generation of guests, “Back to Neverland” was the first real explanation of how animation is made that they ever saw — and it was funny, because Robin Williams was in it.

Putting Robin in the courtyard of the new building is a direct line back to that. Not a nostalgic reference to a film, but to the attraction itself and to the people who remember standing in that queue.

It also lands differently given Robin Williams died in 2014, a year before the original attraction closed. A character built from his performance, restored to the building where it debuted, reads as a quiet tribute rather than a merchandising decision.

Choosing Robin signals the project is being made for people who remember what was there before.

What’s Inside

The building houses:

  • Olaf Draws!
  • Off the Page! character meets
  • Drawn to Wonderland
  • Once Upon A Studio Theater
  • An enchanted art gallery

That’s five distinct offerings in one building, which is a substantial amount of indoor, air-conditioned capacity for a park that badly needs it.

Olaf Draws! is the one to watch. It ties into Disney’s recently granted patent for giving AI-driven characters a working memory — technology that would let an interactive Olaf recall details from a conversation rather than resetting each time. Disney hasn’t linked the two publicly, but the timing is notable.

Why This Building Matters for Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios has the tightest capacity constraints of the four Walt Disney World parks, and its indoor options are limited.

Five experiences in one building addresses that directly — character meets, a theater, and a gallery are all low-cost, high-capacity offerings that absorb guests without a ride system.

It also arrives as the park absorbs construction elsewhere. Monstropolis is rising on the other side of the park for a 2027 opening, and Echo Lake is currently drained with scaffolding on the S.S. Down the Hatch.

Adding capacity while other areas are walled off is sensible sequencing.

The Bottom Line

Walt Disney Imagineering revealed the atrium courtyard entrance to The Magic of Disney Animation — a gathering space with a photo op, benches, and landscaping, inspired by the real Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank as seen in Once Upon A Studio.

Robin, the animated Lost Boy created from Robin Williams for the original attraction’s 1989 pre-show, is the character WDI says adds the magic to the space.

The building opens September 14 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with Olaf Draws!, Off the Page!, Drawn to Wonderland, Once Upon A Studio Theater, and an enchanted art gallery.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
