Downtown Clowntown Scare Zone Announced for HHN 35

Art the Clown and the Killer Klowns are sharing a street. Universal Orlando announced Downtown Clowntown, the next scare zone for Halloween Horror Nights 35, and the roster is the most stacked of any zone announced so far.

The “Distinct Boroughs” Structure

This is the detail that separates Downtown Clowntown from a generic clown zone, and it’s a smart use of the location.

The New York area at Universal Studios Florida is one of the most architecturally detailed sections of the park — brownstones, storefronts, alleys, and street corners built to represent different parts of the city. It’s already segmented by design.

Building the zone as boroughs means each section gets its own clown population. Instead of one homogeneous mass of clowns, you get distinct groups with distinct looks in distinct settings. That’s more visually interesting and it gives scare actors clearer character definition.

It also solves the biggest weakness of clown-themed scare zones: repetition. Twenty clowns who all look roughly the same stop being scary about ninety seconds in. Twenty clowns divided into four visually separate factions across four street sections stay interesting considerably longer.

Art the Clown Is the Headline

Art the Clown, from the Terrifier franchise, is one of the most in-demand horror properties of the past several years, and his HHN presence is a genuine draw.

What makes Art work in a scare zone specifically: he’s a silent performer. No dialogue, entirely physical — exaggerated gestures, that mocking wave, the head tilt. That’s exactly the skill set a scare zone performer needs, since scare zones are loud, chaotic environments where dialogue doesn’t carry.

A character built on physical performance translates to a crowded street better than almost any other horror icon.

The Killer Klowns Connection

Killer Klowns from Outer Space, the 1988 horror-comedy from the Chiodo Brothers, brings a completely different visual register — bright, absurd, cartoonish, and genuinely unsettling for it.

Universal has also announced that Killer Klowns from Outer Space will return as a haunted house at Universal Studios Hollywood for HHN 2026, marking the property’s third appearance there following 2019 and 2022.

So the property is running a house on the West Coast and a scare zone presence on the East Coast in the same year.

The Tonal Contrast Is the Point

Putting Art the Clown and the Killer Klowns in the same zone is a bolder choice than it might look.

Art is grounded, silent, and genuinely disturbing. The Killer Klowns are loud, colorful, and absurd. Those are opposite ends of the clown-horror spectrum.

In a zone divided into distinct boroughs, that contrast becomes an asset — you move from one tonal register to another as you walk the street. It gives the zone dynamics that a single-tone concept can’t.

“Clowns Yet to Be Revealed”

Paradoa’s phrasing leaves the door open, and for a 35th anniversary event that’s worth paying attention to.

“Familiar clowns from the past” almost certainly means characters from HHN’s own history. The event has a deep clown tradition, and Jack the Clown — the most beloved original icon in HHN history — is co-hosting this year’s Infernal Carnival of Nightmares alongside Dr. Oddfellow.

Whether Jack himself appears in Downtown Clowntown is unannounced, but a clown-themed zone at an anniversary event co-hosted by HHN’s most famous clown is a connection worth watching for.

• Walk it twice. The borough structure means different sections have different content. One pass through a crowded street will miss most of it.
• New York is a major thoroughfare. You’ll pass through repeatedly on your way between houses, so vary your timing rather than making a single trip.
• Late night is better. Fewer people, more room for performers to work.
• Go early in the season. HHN 35 opens August 28, and late August through early September has the lightest crowds of the run.
