Walt Disney Imagineering Shares Disney Starlight Parade Preview: Reveals New Character Named Whimsy

Hey Disney Vacationers! If you’re a fan of Disney nighttime shows, this is one you don’t want to miss. Walt Disney Imagineering just shared a brand-new episode of its behind-the-scenes video series We Call It Imagineering, and it gives us our best Disney Starlight Parade preview yet.

The episode is filled with new details about the upcoming Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away parade, set to debut July 20 at Magic Kingdom. From first-time character reveals to cutting-edge lighting effects and float technology, here’s everything you need to know before the big premiere.

Quick Glance: Disney Starlight Parade Preview Highlights

• Debut date: July 20, 2025, at Magic Kingdom
• Whimsy revealed: Brand-new starlight character leads finale float
• Jiminy Cricket returns: Custom animated farewell created for the parade
• Confirmed float lineup: 8 themed units featuring Disney favorites
• Next-gen tech: GPS lighting, fiber optic costumes, UV effects
• Parade route: Runs in reverse, starting at Main Street Fire Station

Meet Whimsy: The Parade’s New Original Character

One of the biggest surprises in this Disney Starlight Parade preview is the reveal of Whimsy — a brand-new character created just for this parade. Whimsy is described as a “child-like whimsical character made of starlight.” He’s energetic, glowing, and inspired by classic Disney animation.

Whimsy leads the finale float, which brings together beloved Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Snow White, Aladdin, and more. He represents the spirit of the parade — full of dreams, imagination, and a little bit of sparkle.

Jiminy Cricket’s Return with a Modern Twist

Another exciting reveal is the return of Jiminy Cricket, appearing in a brand-new animated farewell sequence at the end of the parade. The animation is led by Disney legend Eric Goldberg and combines hand-drawn techniques with modern lighting effects.

The team designed Jiminy with over 70 separate pieces, allowing him to be illuminated with a new projection effect called Starlight Magic. His appearance is a clear nod to SpectroMagic, where he also served as the final farewell.

Full Float Lineup Confirmed

Here’s the official lineup of floats as confirmed in the new video:

1. Blue Fairy – Leads the parade
2. Peter Pan – Featuring the rooftops of London
3. Wish – Asha and the Kingdom of Rosas
4. Encanto – La Familia Madrigal
5. Frozen – Elsa
6. Coco – Miguel, Dante, and Pepita
7. Moana – With Pua, HeiHei, and Gramma Tala
8. Grand Finale Float – Featuring:
   • Whimsy
   • Goofy and Pluto
   • Donald and Daisy
   • Snow White and Dopey
   • Rapunzel and Flynn Rider
   • Aladdin and Jasmine
   • Mickey and Minnie
   • Animated Jiminy Cricket (projected farewell)

Standout Tech and Creative Touches

The Disney Starlight Parade preview also shows off how far Disney has pushed the tech on this show. Here are some of the standout elements:

• Music score mixes orchestral and electronic themes inspired by Main Street Electrical Parade and SpectroMagic
• Moana’s float uses 50,000+ pixels and UV lighting to mimic glowing water and sails
• Floats are synced with GPS-triggered music and lights for perfect timing throughout the park
• Costumes include custom prints, fiber optics, and hand-placed rhinestones that respond to the floats’ soundtracks
• Dancers are inspired by Mary Blair’s style, with a theme of “dancing through the stars”

Parade Route and Viewing Tips

The Disney Starlight Parade will use a reverse version of the traditional Magic Kingdom parade route. It begins at the Main Street Fire Station, travels down Main Street, U.S.A., circles the hub at Cinderella Castle, passes through Liberty Square, and ends in Frontierland.

Best places to watch include:

• Liberty Square bridge – More quiet and scenic
• Cinderella Castle hub – Best views for photos and fireworks
• Near the Emporium on Main Street – Perfect for a quick exit after the parade

This reverse direction is expected to continue long-term to help with better crowd flow after the show ends.

Final Thoughts on the Disney Starlight Parade Preview

This Disney Starlight Parade preview shows how Disney is blending its parade history with new ideas and technology. From a brand-new character like Whimsy to the return of Jiminy Cricket in a fully reimagined way, this feels like a modern tribute to everything we love about nighttime shows at Magic Kingdom.

The floats are more detailed. The lighting is smarter. The music hits all the right notes. And with a parade route built for better flow, Disney is clearly thinking about both the magic and the guest experience.

If you’re heading to Magic Kingdom starting July 20, this should be at the top of your must-see list.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who.

We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
