If you or someone in your travel party has a disability that makes waiting in traditional standby queues difficult, Disney’s Disability Access Service (DAS) could be a game-changer for your Walt Disney World visit. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of what DAS is, who qualifies, how to register, and how to use it effectively at the parks.
What Is DAS?
DAS — the Disability Access Service — is a program offered by Walt Disney World designed to assist guests whose disability prevents them from waiting in a conventional queue environment for extended periods of time. It’s important to understand what DAS is not: it’s not a front-of-line pass and it doesn’t eliminate wait times. Instead, it allows eligible guests to wait for an attraction outside of the physical queue, returning at a time that reflects the current standby wait. You can spend that wait time anywhere in the park — sitting down, grabbing a snack, enjoying an area — rather than standing in line.
Who Qualifies for DAS?
DAS is intended for guests with a developmental disability such as autism or a similar condition that makes sustained queue waiting difficult. Disney has emphasized that DAS is not available based solely on physical mobility limitations — guests who use wheelchairs or ECVs are typically accommodated through the accessible queue entrances that are standard at most attractions. DAS is specifically designed for guests whose disability is not physical but creates challenges with traditional queue environments.
Disney does not require documentation or a formal diagnosis, but cast members conduct a brief conversation during registration to understand the guest’s needs. The decision to approve DAS is made on a case-by-case basis.
How to Register for DAS
There are two ways to register for DAS:
- Pre-Registration (Recommended): You can register via video chat with a Disney cast member up to 30 days before your visit through the My Disney Experience app or Disney’s website. This is the recommended route — it’s less stressful than doing it in person and gets the process out of the way before you arrive at the park. Pre-registration also includes two DAS Advance selections: pre-booked return times for two attractions of your choice.
- In-Person Registration: You can register in person at Guest Relations at any Walt Disney World theme park on the day of your visit. Expect wait times at Guest Relations, especially during peak seasons. In-person registration does not include Advance selections.
DAS is issued for the eligible guest and up to 5 members of their immediate travel party (for a total of 6 guests). The DAS guest must be present when the return time is redeemed.
How DAS Works in the Parks
Once registered, using DAS is straightforward. Through the My Disney Experience app, you can request a DAS return time for an attraction. The return window given reflects the current standby wait. When your return time arrives, you and your party can enter through the Lightning Lane entrance of that attraction.
You can only hold one active DAS return time at a time. Once you redeem it (or the return window expires), you can request another. The strategy most guests use is to request a DAS return time for a headliner attraction while riding something else or enjoying another part of the park, then return when the window opens.
DAS Advance Selections
Guests who pre-register for DAS receive two DAS Advance selections — pre-booked return times for specific attractions on specific dates. These selections are made during the video chat registration and are separate from your in-park DAS usage. They function like pre-booked Lightning Lane reservations and are a valuable perk of pre-registering — especially if there are specific headliner attractions your party doesn’t want to miss.
Key Tips for Using DAS
- Pre-register early — appointment slots fill up, especially 30 days before busy periods
- Have a plan for how to use your wait time while a DAS return time is active — use it to ride other attractions or take breaks
- The DAS guest must be present at the Lightning Lane entrance when the return time is redeemed — the rest of the party cannot go ahead without them
- DAS does not stack with individual Lightning Lane purchases for the same attraction at the same time, but you can use both over the course of a day for different attractions
- Check the MDE app regularly — DAS return times are managed entirely through the app
DAS and Recent Changes
Disney has updated and tightened DAS eligibility criteria in recent years following concerns about misuse of the program. The current system places more emphasis on the conversation with cast members to determine eligibility, and DAS is now more specifically scoped to developmental disabilities. If you’ve used DAS on a previous visit, it’s worth re-reading Disney’s current guidelines before your next trip, as policies can change.
For guests who have questions that go beyond this guide, Disney’s Guest Relations team is always the best resource — both at the parks and via the pre-registration video chat. Every situation is unique, and cast members are trained to have these conversations with care.
