Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Gets New Signage

The most “wildest ride in the wilderness” is about to look better than ever. New permit filings confirm that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is getting fresh signage as part of its sweeping Magic Kingdom refurbishment — and the full scope of this project continues to impress. Here’s the latest on what’s coming when the beloved Frontierland coaster reopens in early May 2026.

New Signage Confirmed via Permit Filing

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a Notice of Commencement for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad signage installation at Magic Kingdom. The work will be handled by Design Communications Ltd., a frequent WDI vendor for sign fabrication and installation across multiple recent Walt Disney World projects. The permit adds another layer of detail to what is shaping up to be a comprehensive overhaul of the attraction.

A Mountain-Top to Cavern-Deep Refurbishment

Disney’s own description of this project is extensive: a “mountain-top to cavern-deep refurbishment” that includes all-new trains, refreshed animatronics, and restored effects throughout the entire attraction. This isn’t a cosmetic touch-up — it’s a meaningful restoration of one of Magic Kingdom’s most beloved classics.

Wyatt Winter, Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, has confirmed a detail that has fans particularly excited: guests will see gold on the mountain for the first time in the attraction’s Magic Kingdom history. That’s a significant visual change for an iconic landmark that has dominated the Frontierland skyline for decades.

The Rainbow Caverns Scene Is Coming

One of the most anticipated additions is an all-new Rainbow Caverns scene, featuring phosphorescent pools alongside iridescent stalactites and stalagmites. This is a nod to the original Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland at Disneyland — a beloved predecessor to Big Thunder — and represents Disney bringing deeper storytelling back to the attraction. The visual effects described sound genuinely spectacular.

When Does Big Thunder Mountain Reopen?

Disney has confirmed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen in early May 2026. No specific date has been announced yet. As Disney put it: “The attraction will reopen with new magic and the shine and polish of an all-over refurbishment in early May.”

If you have a Magic Kingdom trip planned for May or later, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is going to be a must-do all over again. The combination of new trains, restored animatronics, the Rainbow Caverns scene, and gold on the mountain makes this feel like the definitive version of an already-great ride. We’ll update with the specific reopening date as soon as Disney announces it.
