Wyatt Winter, Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, confirmed on Good Morning America that guests will see gold on the mountain for the first time in the ride’s entire Magic Kingdom history. That’s a significant milestone for a coaster that’s been running since 1980.

Rainbow Caverns: A Brand-New Scene

The most exciting addition is the new Rainbow Caverns scene. We’re talking phosphorescent pools and iridescent stalactites and stalagmites — it sounds absolutely stunning. The inspiration comes from Disneyland’s early Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland, the original attraction that predated Big Thunder at the Anaheim park.

This is a genuinely new piece of storytelling layered into a classic attraction. It’s the kind of addition that gives longtime fans something new to discover while keeping the core experience intact for first-timers. Disney has been doing this kind of layered storytelling well lately, and it fits perfectly with Big Thunder’s mythology.

The Story Still Holds

Big Thunder’s narrative centers on Barnabas T. Bullion, founder of the Big Thunder Mountain Company, and his ill-fated ambitions to strip the mountain of its gold. The mountain, of course, had other ideas. That core story isn’t going anywhere — the refurbishment adds new layers while preserving what makes the ride great in the first place.

You’ll still get the same runaway mine train action, sharp turns, and high-speed thrills that made this one of the most beloved coasters at Magic Kingdom. The update just adds more texture and detail throughout the experience.

When Is It Reopening?

Disney previously announced a general “spring 2026” window. Early May narrows that significantly. Spring officially runs through June 20, so early May lands well within that timeframe. No specific date has been announced yet — just the early May window.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip.
