Universal Orlando Demand Drop: Comcast Admits Disney Reacted Faster

Universal Orlando is going through a rough patch, and Comcast just said something you almost never hear from a theme park company: a competitor beat it to the punch. On Comcast’s Q3 2026 earnings call this week, executives acknowledged softer Universal Orlando demand and admitted that a competitor, presumably Disney, spotted the slowdown and responded faster.

We already broke down the numbers when Universal theme parks profit fell 17% in Q3. This follow-up covers what Comcast said on the call itself: why demand slipped, what it’s changing, and a new coaster headed to Orlando.

If you’re planning a Universal trip, this one’s worth your time, because Comcast’s fixes point to more deals and fewer Epic Universe headaches.

Quick Summary

  • Comcast says competitors “were quicker to anticipate and recognize softness in demand and adapt their marketing strategies.”
  • It blamed macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds, slow marketing, and capacity and throughput problems at Epic Universe.
  • Softness is expected to continue next quarter and into the first half of 2027, then improve in the second half.
  • New leaders from United Airlines and NBCUniversal are joining to fix marketing and the business side.
  • Plans include promotional packages, three-park passes, more media spending, Epic Universe reliability work, and a new Fast & Furious coaster in Orlando next year.

The Admission That Stood Out

Here’s the line that got everyone’s attention:

“We believe competitors were quicker to anticipate and recognize softness in demand and adapt their marketing strategies,” the company said.

Comcast didn’t name Disney, but it doesn’t need to. Walt Disney World is the obvious competitor in Orlando, and Disney has been aggressive with offers this year. For Comcast to say that out loud on an earnings call is unusual, and it tells you the company knows it was slow.

Celestial Goodnight at Epic Universe

Why Universal Orlando Demand Slowed

Comcast pointed to three main factors:

  • Macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds: broader economic pressure on travel spending
  • Marketing that was too slow: Universal didn’t adjust fast enough when demand started weakening
  • Epic Universe capacity and throughput: the new park can’t move guests through rides as quickly as it needs to yet

That last one matters a lot for guests. Comcast called Epic Universe “the most technologically advanced theme park ever built,” and said getting that technology stable, along with training staff to load and unload at speed, is taking time. In plain terms, rides break down and lines move slower than they should.

Executives expect the softness to continue through the next quarter and into the first half of 2027, before conditions start improving in the second half of the year.

New Leadership Brought In

To fix the marketing gap, Comcast moved quickly on new hires:

  • Luc Bondar, formerly of United Airlines, has joined as Chief Brand and Commercial Officer.
  • Randy Culbertson, the former NBCUniversal CFO, is coming on board as Chief Business Officer for Universal Destinations & Experiences.

An airline marketing executive is an interesting pick. Airlines live and die by pricing and promotions, which fits Comcast’s plan to lean on deals.

What’s Coming to Universal Orlando

Comcast says it’s still investing for the long haul. The plans include:

  • Promotional packages and three-park passes to drive attendance
  • More media spending focused on high-return opportunities
  • Continued work on Epic Universe ride reliability and capacity
  • A new Fast & Furious roller coaster coming to Orlando next year

Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift coaster

A New Fast & Furious Coaster Is Coming

The most exciting news for fans: a new Fast & Furious roller coaster is headed to Orlando next year, described as a version of the well-received Hollywood coaster. Executives said guest satisfaction on the Hollywood version is “some of the best we’ve seen in any attraction we’ve opened anywhere.”

If you’ve been waiting for Universal Studios Florida to get a big new thrill ride, this is it. It also gives the original Orlando parks something new to compete with Epic Universe.

The Bigger Picture

Even with the current slowdown, Comcast says its Orlando numbers still look strong over two years. Attendance, per-capita spending, and overall financial performance are all described as “materially above” where they were two years ago, and guest satisfaction scores keep climbing.

Comcast frames these parks as decade-long investments and shows no sign of pulling back. In its view, the short-term pain is fixable, not structural.

What This Means for Your Trip

  • Expect more deals. Three-park passes and promotional packages are on the way.
  • Don’t rush to buy at full price. If your dates are flexible, wait to see what offers appear.
  • Plan extra time at Epic Universe. Until capacity and reliability improve, build in buffer for longer waits and breakdowns.
  • Mark your calendar for 2027. A new Fast & Furious coaster gives you a reason to plan a return trip.

The Bottom Line

Comcast admits Universal Orlando demand softened and that a competitor reacted faster. It’s responding with new leadership, more promotions, three-park passes, Epic Universe fixes, and a new Fast & Furious coaster coming to Orlando next year. Softness should last into early 2027, which likely means better deals for you. Watch for new offers before you book, and plan a little extra patience at Epic Universe.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
