Bad news if you were counting on riding this over Thanksgiving week.
The Jurassic Park River Adventure refurbishment at Islands of Adventure has been extended again. The ride was scheduled to reopen on November 19, 2026. That date has now moved to December 17, 2026, adding nearly another month to a closure that started back in January.
Universal has not given a reason for the extension or said anything about what work is happening behind the walls. The original closure was described only as planned maintenance, and that is still all we have.
Here is what the new date means in practice, why the length of this project is less alarming than it sounds, and why I would not build a December trip around December 17 specifically.
Quick Summary
- Jurassic Park River Adventure was scheduled to reopen November 19, 2026.
- The new target reopening date is December 17, 2026.
- That adds roughly one month to the closure.
- The ride closed in January 2026 for an 11-month refurbishment.
- Universal originally described the work as planned maintenance.
- No reason has been given for the extension, and no work details have been shared.
- The new date puts the reopening just ahead of the Christmas holiday season.
- Refurbishment dates are always subject to change.
What the Jurassic Park River Adventure Refurbishment Extension Actually Changes
The practical answer: a four-week window just went from open to closed.
If you are visiting Islands of Adventure between November 19 and December 16, 2026, and you were previously expecting this ride to be available. You should now plan as though it is not.
That window is not a quiet one. It covers Thanksgiving week, which is one of the busiest stretches of the fall at Universal Orlando, plus the first two weeks of December when crowds build toward the holidays.
Losing a headliner during a high-attendance period has a knock-on effect. Waits concentrate on what is left, which at Islands of Adventure means Jurassic World VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure absorbing guests who would otherwise have split off to the river ride.
This Has Been a Nearly Year-Long Project
Context that reframes the extension: this is not a short refurbishment that slipped.
Jurassic Park River Adventure closed in January 2026 for what was announced as an 11-month refurbishment, with a reopening target of November 19, 2026. Universal described the closure as planned maintenance at the time.
With the move to December 17, the total closure runs closer to twelve months.
Here is the honest read on that. A one-month slip on an eleven-month project is roughly a nine percent overrun. On a water ride that has been drained, opened up, and worked on for most of a year, that is unremarkable. It is the kind of adjustment that happens when crews find something while the flume is empty.
What it is not is evidence of a disaster. Fans tend to read every date change as a crisis, and this one does not support that reading.
Why I Would Not Trust December 17 Either
This is the part worth being blunt about.
Universal’s own language on refurbishment dates is that they are subject to change, and this project has already changed once. A ride that has slipped from November to December can slip again, and the new date lands eight days before Christmas, which is the single worst time of year for Universal to debut anything that is not fully tested.
If riding this specific attraction matters to you, do not book a trip for the week of December 17 on the strength of that date. Build the trip around things that are definitely open and treat the river ride as a bonus if it happens to be running.
If it is the whole reason for your trip, wait for Universal to confirm the reopening after it actually happens.
One Upside: It Returns for the Christmas Crowds
There is a reasonable case that this timing is deliberate rather than accidental.
December 17 puts the ride back in service right before the Christmas-to-New-Year window, which is the highest-attendance stretch of the entire year at Universal Orlando. Having a major Islands of Adventure attraction online for that period is worth more to Universal operationally than having it online for mid-November.
If you are visiting between Christmas and New Year, this extension likely does not affect you at all, assuming the date holds.
A Water Ride in December Is a Different Experience
Worth knowing if you are planning a late-December visit specifically to ride it.
Jurassic Park River Adventure ends with a steep plunge into a splashdown, and you get wet. Orlando in late December can run cool, with mornings in the 50s and plenty of days that never feel warm enough to want a soaking.
Universal also closes water rides when temperatures drop far enough. A reopening on December 17 does not guarantee the ride operates every day after that, and cool-weather closures are ordinary at this time of year.
Pack a poncho or plan to use the lockers, and check the app the morning of your visit rather than assuming.
Other Work Happening at Islands of Adventure
This is not the only closure reshaping the park right now.
Over in the former Lost Continent area, demolition has been running for months, with Poseidon’s Fury reduced to a concrete foundation and the Treasures of Poseidon gift shop on the list to come down. We covered that in detail in our Lost Continent demolition update.
Put together, a chunk of Islands of Adventure is either behind walls or missing an attraction this fall. That is worth factoring into expectations if you have not visited in a while.
The Bottom Line
The Jurassic Park River Adventure refurbishment has been extended from a November 19, 2026 reopening to December 17, 2026, adding about a month to a closure that began in January as an announced 11-month project. Universal has not explained the delay and has not described the work.
If you are visiting between November 19 and December 16, plan without it. If you are visiting between Christmas and New Year, you are probably fine. And if the ride is the reason for your trip, wait for confirmation that it has actually reopened before you book, because a date that has already moved once can move again.
Check the Universal Orlando app the morning of your visit. That is the only source that reflects what is actually running today.
