Hey Universal Vacationers! Universal Orlando Resort has announced something big: Jurassic Park River Adventure refurbishment is to begin on January 5, 2026, and won’t reopen until November 19, 2026.
That’s more than 10 months. For a water ride, that’s almost unheard of. Normally, refurbishments are short — a few weeks, maybe two to three months. Ten months is long enough to make fans wonder if this is more than just routine maintenance.
What Universal Has Confirmed
The official refurbishment schedule looks like this:
- Closure date: January 5, 2026
- Reopening date: November 19, 2026
By comparison, here’s what other Universal attractions are scheduled for in late 2025:
- Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls: October 6–31, 2025
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey: November 10–20, 2025
- Hogwarts Express: September 15–19, 2025
We don’t need a math degree to see the difference. River Adventure’s downtime is far longer than any of these.
The Ride We Know Today
Jurassic Park River Adventure has been thrilling guests since 1999. It starts peacefully, floating past Ultrasaurus, Stegosaurus, and Psittacosaurus. Then a Parasaurolophus sends your raft off course into raptor territory, where things quickly spiral. By the time you’re facing a massive T-Rex, your only way out is an 85-foot plunge down the waterfall.
It’s still a blast, but it’s also a ride that shows its age. The animatronics, many of which sit in water, have taken a beating over the years. Some fans have noticed the dinos don’t always move like they used to.
Why the Long Closure Raises Eyebrows
Water rides in Florida usually take their downtime in winter, when crowds are lighter and the weather is cooler. These refurbishments are practical — no one enjoys being drenched in 55-degree weather — and they rarely last more than a couple of months.
That’s what makes this closure stand out. A full 10 months suggests something more substantial. This isn’t just fixing pumps or repainting walls. It points to a bigger project.
Jurassic World Connection
Universal has been slowly nudging Jurassic Park at Islands of Adventure toward Jurassic World for years:
- 2018: Raptor Encounter was updated to feature Blue, the star Velociraptor from Jurassic World.
- 2021: VelociCoaster opened, fully themed around the newer films.
And then there’s the west coast comparison. Universal Studios Hollywood closed its Jurassic Park River Adventure in September 2018. After a 10-month closure, it reopened in July 2019 as Jurassic World: The Ride. That overhaul included:
- A Mosasaurus “aquarium” scene with massive screens and water effects
- New animatronics like the Indominus Rex and updated raptors
- A baby Stegosaurus and Gyrosphere references for deeper immersion
- More dramatic water effects, including overhead splashes and sprays
The Hollywood timeline looks a lot like what we’re seeing in Orlando right now.
Looking at the Bigger Picture
Theme park history gives us a clear pattern: long closures could mean major transformations. Disney’s Splash Mountain closed for 17 months before reopening as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Hollywood’s Jurassic Park River Adventure took 10 months to emerge as Jurassic World.
With the land at Islands of Adventure already leaning heavily into Jurassic World, and with a refurbishment timeline that matches Hollywood’s overhaul exactly, it’s hard not to connect the dots.
My Take
Here’s where I land: Universal doesn’t close one of its headline rides for nearly a year unless something big is happening. All signs point toward Orlando’s version of Jurassic Park River Adventure being updated into Jurassic World River Adventure. However, I would not expect any changes to occur unless Universal makes some sort of announcement in the next month or so. Historically, Universal leans into memorializing its iconic attractions when they’re being shut down permanently or major changes are on the horizon.
Would fans miss the nostalgic Jurassic Park branding? Sure. But the Jurassic World update brings fresher dinosaurs, more advanced effects, and a story that feels bigger and more intense. That’s exactly what makes a great theme park ride.
Could this be one of the additional attractions in the works that Mark Woodbury mentioned at a recent Bank of America conference, when talking about work beginning on Lost Continent and an Epic Universe expansion?
