The Disney Believe has had its keel laying ceremony at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany — and Disney put a Tinker Bell coin under the keel.
It is a small gesture inside a very large construction project, and it tells you exactly which character is carrying this ship.
Quick Summary
- The keel laying ceremony took place at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany
- A custom-minted coin showing a portrait of Tinker Bell was placed under the keel
- That same Tinker Bell portrait will appear on the ship’s bow
- The ceremony follows the float out of the first gigablock in mid-September
- Construction on the second gigablock is now underway
- Disney holds a livestream on Wednesday, October 7 at 4:30 pm ET to reveal homeport, itineraries, venues, and entertainment
- The Disney Believe is expected to debut in 2027 as the fourth Wish-class ship
What a Keel Laying Actually Is
The keel is the primary structural member of a ship — it runs the length of the hull along the center of the bottom, from bow to stern. Everything else is built off it.
The keel laying ceremony is a maritime tradition that goes back to ancient Greece and Rome. A specially crafted coin is placed under the keel for a short time. The custom is said to bring good fortune to the ship and its future crew before it sets sail.
It is one of the genuinely old rituals still practiced in modern shipbuilding, and cruise lines lean into it because it is a rare construction milestone that photographs well. Most of what happens at a shipyard looks like steel.
The Tinker Bell Coin
Disney had a coin minted specifically for the Believe, showing a portrait of Tinker Bell.
That portrait is not a one-off for the ceremony. It mirrors the artwork that will appear on the ship’s bow — Disney confirmed earlier that Tinker Bell gets the bow placement on this ship.
Bow character placement on a Disney ship is not a small detail. It is the single most photographed spot on the hull and effectively becomes the ship’s visual identity. The Wish has Rapunzel. The Treasure has Aladdin and Abu. The Destiny has Hercules. The Believe gets Tinker Bell, and now she is literally under the keel too.
Where Construction Stands
This milestone follows the float out of the Believe’s first gigablock in mid-September. Work on the second gigablock is now underway.
Meyer Werft builds ships in large prefabricated sections — gigablocks — that get assembled rather than built up piece by piece in place. It is why a ship this size can go from steel cutting to sea trials in a few years instead of a decade, and it is why the construction timeline tends to be reported in blocks rather than in percentages.
Two gigablocks in means this is early-to-middle construction, not finishing work. There is a lot of ship left to build.
The Reveal Is This Week
Here is the part to put on your calendar, and we flagged this event when Disney first announced it.
Disney holds a livestream on Wednesday, October 7 at 4:30 pm ET across Disney Parks social channels. On the agenda:
- The Disney Believe’s homeport
- Itineraries
- New venues
- Entertainment
That is a substantial list. Homeport and itineraries are the two pieces that determine whether this ship is realistic for your family, and they have not been announced yet. If you have been waiting to plan around the Believe, Wednesday is the day you find out whether you can.
New venues and entertainment are the more fun reveals, and the ones most likely to generate arguments. Each Wish-class ship has differentiated itself through its restaurants, lounges, and theater shows rather than through its hull, so this is where Disney makes the case for why the Believe is not just the Destiny with a different character on the front.
Where the Believe Fits in the Fleet
The Believe is the fourth ship in the Wish class, joining:
- Disney Wish (2022)
- Disney Treasure (2024)
- Disney Destiny (2025)
- Disney Believe (expected 2027)
Four ships in one class is a serious commitment to a single platform, and it reflects how aggressively Disney Cruise Line has been expanding. The Wish class shares a hull and general layout, which lets Disney build faster while differentiating each ship through theming, venues, and entertainment.
What We Still Don’t Know
Until Wednesday’s livestream:
- Homeport
- Itineraries and sail dates
- When bookings open
- Restaurant and lounge lineup
- Theater shows
- Which Disney story the ship’s overall theme is built around
That last one is the one to watch. Tinker Bell on the bow points toward Peter Pan, but Disney has not confirmed a ship-wide theme, and the Wish-class ships have used their bow character more as a mascot than as a thesis statement.
The Bottom Line
The Believe’s keel is laid, a Tinker Bell coin is under it, and the second gigablock is in progress. Construction is tracking.
The real news lands Wednesday, October 7 at 4:30 pm ET, when Disney finally says where this ship sails and what is on it. We will have that as soon as it drops.
