A theater marquee may have leaked the show name. Disney is giving fans a closer look at the upcoming Monstropolis land at D23, with a dedicated display showcasing design details and physical models from the new area coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Monstropolis land design display includes a mood board, monster maquettes, and one detail that may hint at the name of the show coming to the Glob Theater.

Here’s what’s on display.

Quick Summary

  • “Old Town Monstropolis” is referenced as one of the land’s distinct areas
  • The tagline “The City Frightful” appears alongside the Monstropolis logo
  • Signage references the design philosophy “Designing on Monsterous Scales”
  • Concept art shows a marquee reading “Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike”
  • Painted maquettes show monster-fied versions of a pigeon, squirrel, and rabbit

The Mood Board

The Monstropolis exhibit features a mood board showing the design inspiration behind the land’s neighborhoods, including sketches and concept renderings.

The board references “Old Town Monstropolis” as one of the land’s distinct areas, with the tagline “The City Frightful” appearing alongside the Monstropolis logo.

Signage within the display also references the land’s design philosophy — “Designing on Monsterous Scales” — giving a sense of how Walt Disney Imagineering is approaching the architectural language of the monster city.

“Designing on Monsterous Scales” Is the Interesting Phrase

That phrasing points to a specific design problem, and it’s a genuinely hard one.

Monsters are not human-sized. Sulley is roughly eight feet tall. Mike is a metre of eyeball. Roz is squat, Celia is serpentine, and the crowd scenes in the films feature creatures of wildly varying proportion.

A city built for them shouldn’t feel human-proportioned. Doorways, windows, signage heights, seat dimensions, and street widths all have to read as belonging to something other than us — while remaining functional for actual human guests walking through.

Get it right and Monstropolis feels genuinely alien. Get it wrong and it’s a themed street with monster decals on it.

“Old Town Monstropolis” as a named district also suggests the land has internal geography rather than being one undifferentiated street. Distinct neighborhoods give a land depth and give designers permission to vary the architecture.

The Possible Glob Theater Show Name

One detail spotted in the D23 display may hint at the name of the new show coming to the Glob Theater.

Concept art visible on the mood board shows a theater marquee reading “Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike.”

It’s not yet clear whether this is the actual show title or simply placeholder text used for design purposes — but it’s the first time anything resembling a show name has appeared in Disney’s official materials.

The Glob Theater is being built inside the former MuppetVision 3D building, and Disney has not yet made any official announcement about what guests will experience inside.

Treat This Carefully

Worth being clear about what this is and isn’t.

Concept art marquees are frequently placeholder. Designers need text on a sign to evaluate composition, and that text often doesn’t survive to opening. Reading a title off a mood board is exactly the kind of inference that gets fans excited and then disappointed.

That said, it’s the only signal that exists. Disney has announced nothing about the Glob Theater’s contents, so a marquee in official display materials is genuinely the best available evidence — however provisional.

The MuppetVision context adds weight to the interest. That building housed one of the most beloved attractions at Hollywood Studios, and its closure was contentious. What replaces it carries scrutiny that a new-build theater wouldn’t.

The Monster Maquettes

Also on display are painted maquettes of monster-fied versions of everyday critters — a pigeon, a squirrel, and a rabbit — all given the full monster treatment with horns, claws, and oversized features.

This is a lovely detail and a strong signal about the land’s ambition.

Monstropolis needs its own ecosystem to feel like a real place. A city with monster residents but ordinary pigeons would break immediately. Designing monster versions of background animals — creatures nobody will photograph or buy merchandise of — is the kind of unglamorous world-building that separates a convincing land from a decorated one.

It’s the same instinct that put monster-fied vehicles, signage, and infrastructure into the films.

The Story Premise

The mood board references the land’s central story premise — the transition from “Scare City” to H.U.M.A.N. Day hosts — reinforcing the narrative of Monstropolis opening its doors to human guests for the first time.

That framing solves the fundamental problem of putting guests inside this world.

In Monsters, Inc., humans are toxic. Contact with a child triggers a full hazmat response. A theme park land where guests walk freely through the monster city has to reconcile that.

Monsters, Inc. resolves it in the film’s own ending — the discovery that laughter generates more power than screams. A city that has transitioned from scaring children to entertaining them has a genuine in-story reason to welcome human visitors.

“H.U.M.A.N. Day hosts” suggests Disney is making that transition explicit and building the land’s hospitality logic around it.

What We Still Don’t Know

Disney has not yet announced an opening date for Monstropolis, but more may come over the weekend at D23.

Outstanding questions:

  • The opening year
  • What the Glob Theater show actually is
  • The full attraction lineup for the land
  • Dining and retail concepts
  • How the land connects to the rest of Hollywood Studios

The Bottom Line

The Monstropolis land design display at D23 shows a mood board referencing “Old Town Monstropolis,” the tagline “The City Frightful,” and the design philosophy “Designing on Monsterous Scales,” plus painted maquettes of monster-fied pigeons, squirrels, and rabbits.

A marquee in concept art reads “Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike” — possibly the Glob Theater show name, possibly placeholder text.

No opening date has been announced. With D23 running through Sunday, more details may still come.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
