Old Key West Disney Springs Boat Service Paused This Summer

Reading Time: 4 minutes

If you’re staying at Disney’s Old Key West Resort this summer, your boat ride to Disney Springs is off the table for a few weeks. Old Key West Disney Springs boat service on the Sassagoula River Cruise route stops running Monday, July 20, and stays down through early August 2026 while Disney handles refurbishment work along the route.

That’s a real change to how you get around, and it’s worth knowing before you check in rather than after you’ve walked down to the dock with a stroller and two tired kids. The boat is one of the small pleasures of staying at Old Key West. Losing it for a couple of weeks isn’t a vacation-ruiner, but it does change your timing.

Here’s exactly what’s happening, who it affects, and how to get to Disney Springs without the boat.

Quick Summary

  • Old Key West Disney Springs boat service pauses Monday, July 20 through early August 2026
  • Disney cites refurbishment work along the Sassagoula River Cruise route
  • Bus service to Disney Springs runs as the replacement during the closure
  • No exact return date has been given beyond “early August”
  • Only the Disney Springs boat route is affected — bus service to the four theme parks continues as normal
  • Check the My Disney Experience app or your resort front desk for updates closer to your stay

What Is Closing and When

Boat transportation on the Sassagoula River Cruise route will not run for Old Key West guests starting Monday, July 20, 2026. Disney has said the pause runs through early August, without naming a specific return date.

The reason given is refurbishment work along the boat route. That’s the extent of the official explanation. Disney has not detailed what portion of the waterway or which docks are involved.

If your trip falls anywhere between July 20 and the first week of August, plan around the bus.

What the Sassagoula River Cruise Actually Is

The Sassagoula River Cruise is the water taxi network that connects several Disney Springs-area resorts to Disney Springs itself, running along the Sassagoula River. Old Key West sits on that route, along with Port Orleans Riverside, Port Orleans French Quarter, and Saratoga Springs.

The boats are small, open-sided, and slow in the best way. For a lot of guests, the ride is part of why they book these resorts. You get a quiet trip down the water instead of a bus ride through a parking lot.

That’s also why the pause stings a little more than a typical transportation notice. You’re not losing efficiency — the bus is often faster. You’re losing the experience.

How to Get to Disney Springs Without the Boat

Walt Disney World bus service is your alternative during the closure. Buses run from Old Key West directly to Disney Springs and operate on the standard resort transportation schedule.

A few practical notes based on how this usually plays out:

  • Build in extra time in the evening. Disney Springs buses get busy between 5pm and 8pm, and the return trip after dinner is the crunch point. Give yourself 30 to 45 minutes of buffer.
  • Old Key West has multiple bus stops. The resort is spread out across several villages. Know which stop is closest to your building before you head out, and note that the bus makes internal stops before leaving the resort.
  • Rideshare is a reasonable backup. A Lyft or Uber from Old Key West to Disney Springs is a short, inexpensive ride. Minnie Vans are also an option if you want a Disney-operated car with car seats included.
  • You can walk or bike to Saratoga Springs. From there you’re within walking distance of Disney Springs via the pedestrian bridge. It’s a longer walk than most people expect, so save this for cooler mornings.

Your Theme Park Transportation Is Not Affected

Worth stating plainly: this pause applies to the Disney Springs boat route only. Bus service from Old Key West to Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom runs as normal throughout the closure.

Should This Change Your Plans?

Probably not, but it might change your evenings.

If you booked Old Key West specifically for the boat ride to Disney Springs, and your dates fall inside the closure window, it’s worth a call to Disney to see what they can do. Transportation changes alone rarely qualify for a room change, but it costs nothing to ask.

If you were planning several Disney Springs dinners during the closure, consider shifting one or two to a resort restaurant instead. Olivia’s Cafe is right on property at Old Key West and skips the transportation question entirely.

And if you’re flexible on dates, an early-August arrival puts you closer to the boat coming back.

When Will the Boats Return?

Disney has committed only to “early August 2026.” No firmer date exists as of this writing.

The most reliable way to confirm is the My Disney Experience app, which reflects live transportation status, or the front desk at Old Key West once you’re on property. Refurbishment timelines shift, so treat early August as a target rather than a promise.

The Bottom Line

Old Key West Disney Springs boat service is down from July 20 through early August 2026 for route refurbishment, and buses are covering the gap. It’s a minor inconvenience with an easy workaround, but only if you know about it in advance.

Pad your evening travel time, check the app before you head to the dock, and keep an eye on the front desk for the return date. If your trip lands after the first week of August, you’ll likely find the boats running again — and that slow ride down the Sassagoula waiting for you.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Our experience working with Nate as our Disney vacation planner was exceptional. He was responsive and thorough. He gave us insights that made the trip go much more smoothly. We were able to really relax and focus on quality time as a family and have so much fun doing it! I will definitely reach out for any future trips.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
