New Permit for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Muppets Retheme Filed

New Permit for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster

A building permit filed with Orange County confirms Coastal Steel Inc. has been contracted for general construction work on the attraction. The ride closed on March 2, 2026, and Disney has confirmed a summer 2026 reopening under a brand-new name: Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. If you’ve got a Hollywood Studios trip on the calendar, here’s the full breakdown of what’s happening — and what you can expect when Kermit takes the stage.

What the Building Permit Tells Us

The permit names Coastal Steel Inc. as contractor for general construction scope — this isn’t a paint job or a sign swap. Structural and construction permits like this one get filed when the physical environment inside an attraction is being rebuilt. Combined with Disney’s official summer 2026 reopening confirmation, the timeline is locked in. Construction is moving.

What’s Actually Changing

Here’s the key thing to understand: the ride system stays exactly the same. You’re still getting launched from 0 to 57 mph in about 2.8 seconds on a pitch-black coaster with inversions. What changes is everything you experience around that — the pre-show, the story, and the theming throughout the building. The work associated with this permit is more than likely associated with updating the in-ride signage.

Instead of Aerosmith sending you off to a concert in a stretch limo, you’ll be heading out on a mission with the Electric Mayhem band. Disney has confirmed that Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Scooter will all be part of the new experience. If the pre-show leans into the classic Electric Mayhem chaos, this could be a genuinely great swap.

Why the Muppets Make Sense Here

The Aerosmith partnership had a long run, but the contract came to its natural end. Disney needed an IP that still fits the Hollywood Studios entertainment district — and the Muppets have deep roots at the park. MuppetVision 3D ran at Hollywood Studios for decades before its 2024 closure. Bringing the Muppets into Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster keeps the franchise central to the park while giving the attraction a fresh identity that doesn’t rely on an aging rock band.

For families with younger kids who wouldn’t recognize Aerosmith anyway, this retheme is a net positive. The Electric Mayhem band translates across every age group.

What’s Still Open Right Now

The ride is closed, and Rock Around the Shop — the gift shop attached to the attraction — is also closed. The courtyard area around the building remains accessible, and your path to Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After through that section is unaffected. If you’re visiting during the closure window, plan your Hollywood Studios day without Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in the mix.

When Does It Reopen?

Disney has confirmed a summer 2026 target — no specific date yet. Historically, Disney’s summer window runs June through August. Given the permit activity and the pace of construction, that timeline is realistic. More than likely we should be looking at a late July, August date. Watch for the official opening date announcement as spring 2026 progresses.

The Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Muppets retheme is one of the most exciting updates coming to Hollywood Studios. The coaster experience is already strong — add a full Muppets storyline and you’ve got something that plays to every guest in the park. If you can time your trip around the reopening, it’s worth doing. Check back here for the official date the moment Disney announces it.
