What Disney Announced

Walt Disney World confirmed that the new Walt Disney Studios Lot will roll out in two waves. The first piece to open is Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, arriving this summer with upbeat music and a road trip storyline. Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Daisy, and Pluto join the fun, and if you’ve seen the version at Disneyland Resort, you know this one brings high-energy moments kids love.

Later in the summer, Disney will open The Magic of Disney Animation. This experience pulls inspiration from the short Once Upon a Studio, bringing classic and modern animated characters to life. Guests will see characters leap from portraits, sketch alongside them, and explore Drawn to Wonderland, a playground inspired by Mary Blair’s original Alice in Wonderland concept art.

Six New Meet & Greets Coming to Magic of Disney Animation

Disney also announced six new character meet and greets arriving in late Summer 2026 within The Magic of Disney Animation. These meet and greets will appear inside a new area called Off the Page!, a collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering.

Guests can explore six “departments” of the animation studio:

  • Story
  • Layout
  • Hand-Drawn Animation
  • Computer Animation
  • Lighting
  • Effects

Each department offers a themed meet-and-greet location and a standout photo moment. For example:

  • Mulan appears in the Story department with an oversized storyboard panel as her backdrop.
  • Rapunzel meets in the Layout department, where the setting reflects multiplane camera styling. Line up the shot right, and the layers of art blend together like classic animation magic.

How This Affects Your Trip

Families with young kids will feel this shift right away. Hollywood Studios has needed more offerings for little ones, and the return of a refreshed Disney Jr. show should help lighten pressure on the rest of the park.

The second-phase opening of The Magic of Disney Animation will add shaded indoor spaces, meet and greets, and interactive art-driven moments—all wins for mid-day breaks and character-focused itineraries.

Because this is a phased debut, expect a gradual increase in crowds around the area as each milestone opens.

What We Know So Far

  • Both phases open this summer, with the animation-focused meet and greets following next year.
  • The land is a reimagining of Animation Courtyard, now redesigned as the Walt Disney Studios Lot.
  • Disney is leaning heavily into animation history, Mary Blair’s visual style, and crossover moments inspired by Once Upon a Studio.

My Thoughts

This phased strategy feels familiar. Disney did the same thing with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when Rise of the Resistance wasn’t ready on day one. That staggered opening helped manage crowds and gave the park time to bring everything online safely.

My guess is Disney is repeating that playbook here. By leading with Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, they get families back into an area that’s been quiet during refurbishment. It also spreads demand across the summer instead of funneling everyone into one grand opening day.

It would not surprise me if this move helps rebalance Hollywood Studios overall. The park has leaned heavily toward thrill rides and big-name IP for years. More experiences for young kids rounds out the lineup and creates smoother days for families.

This is speculation, but the focus on animation also feels like Disney investing in something timeless—classic characters, art-driven spaces, and interactive moments that don’t rely on huge ride capacity.

The Walt Disney Studios Lot looks like a meaningful refresh for an area that needed one, and the phased approach should make the rollout smooth for everyone planning summer trips. Let’s see how the timeline plays out, but for now, it’s exciting to have real momentum in this corner of the park again.
