Hey Disney Vacationers! If you’re like me, you get a little thrill every time Walt Disney Imagineering drops a behind-the-scenes video. Recently, they shared a look at new Walt Disney Imagineering special effects, and honestly—it’s the kind of stuff that makes fans geek out.
From realistic storm clouds to high-pressure water blasts and even holographic fire, these effects could play a major role in upcoming lands like Piston Peak National Park, Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom, and the all-new Villains Land rumored for Magic Kingdom.
Let’s break down what Imagineers are working on and where we might see it next.

Imagineering Realistic Storm Clouds
The first effect shown in the new video is a realistic storm cloud being tested in a warehouse. It looks incredible—dense, moody, and alive, like something pulled straight out of a Pixar movie. Even without show lighting, it looks believable. Add a little lightning effect and synchronized sound, and you’ve got Disney magic.
Now, let’s connect the dots. We know Walt Disney Imagineering is developing a new Encanto-themed attraction for Animal Kingdom. Here’s how Disney described it:
“The first-ever ‘Encanto’-themed ride-through attraction is coming to Animal Kingdom, featuring the beloved Madrigal family. Inside the Casita, Antonio has just received his special gift—the ability to communicate with animals—and his room has transformed into a rainforest.”
Disney’s concept art shows a lush jungle environment with vibrant greens and flowing water. And if you’ve seen Encanto, you know exactly who this storm cloud could belong to—Pepa Madrigal, Antonio’s mom, who controls the weather with her emotions.
Her small raincloud is iconic. The one Imagineering tested looks identical in scale. It’s not hard to picture this effect being used during a moment when Pepa gets emotional, creating a living, breathing storm above her head.
It’s a small detail—but those are the kind of emotional moments that make Disney attractions unforgettable.
Could it appear elsewhere? Maybe. There’s a small chance it could tie into Villains Land, especially if Disney leans into newer characters. The recently introduced villain Nalo from Moana 2 has storm powers, which could make this effect a perfect fit for a moody, thunder-filled scene. This feels more unrealistic, but we should never overlook anything when it comes to Disney.

Imagineering Instantaneous High-Pressure Water Blasts
Next, Imagineering showed what they called a “special water feature.” That’s underselling it. What they’re actually testing looks like an instantaneous, high-pressure water blast—basically, a super-powered geyser.
It’s not hard to guess where this could fit. The most obvious connection is Piston Peak National Park, the new area coming to Frontierland, inspired by Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue.
The concept art and maps for Piston Peak show several geysers near the park’s scenic overlook. Imagine a landscape alive with erupting water blasts timed to sound effects, fire, and maybe even aircraft flying overhead. That’s a “wow” moment waiting to happen.
It’s possible this effect isn’t brand new. Disney has used geyser tech before, like at Wilderness Lodge’s Fire Rock Geyser. But what’s being tested looks faster, sharper, and more powerful, not to mention the ability for more repetitive use—like Imagineering took that old idea and gave it an upgrade.
Whether it’s reimagined tech or something completely new, it fits perfectly into the natural energy of Piston Peak.

New Fire and Holographic Flame Effects
The third effect teased in the video is all about fire—but not your average flame. The Imagineer showing it off said it was being developed “for a specific project,” though Disney redacted the project’s name from the audio.
Here’s what we know: this effect uses modern holographic materials, media layers, and fiber optics to create a flame that looks animated yet real. It flickers like fire but glows like something from a dream sequence.
That kind of hybrid effect screams Villains Land to me. It’s the kind of visual storytelling that could work beautifully for the rumored Maleficent coaster or an Indiana Jones reimagining of the current Dinosaur ride at Animal Kingdom.
Imagine a chamber glowing with living fire that reacts to music or dialogue. That’s next-level immersion. And knowing Imagineering, they’re layering projection mapping, lighting, and physical elements together to make it believable from every angle.
We should keep in mind that we did not see the effect in use, so at this point, we cannot confirm if the effect will be more on the animated side or the realistic side. Additionally, there could be more aspects added to create the final version.
Why This Matters for Disney Fans
Every time Walt Disney Imagineering shares a test video, it tells us something bigger: they’re still pushing boundaries. These effects show that Disney is investing in immersive storytelling—not just rides, but complete environments that breathe and react.
We’ve reached a point where Imagineering special effects aren’t just visual tricks—they’re emotional triggers. A single flicker of lightning, a burst of water, or a spark of holographic fire can make you feel something. And that’s what keeps fans like us coming back.
But, as always, not every effect we see in development makes it to the parks. Some are prototypes that get shelved. Others evolve into something totally different. That’s part of the fun. The next time you see a new attraction open, there’s a good chance you’re witnessing years of unseen experimentation finally brought to life.
Final Thoughts
Seeing these new Walt Disney Imagineering special effects in action reminds me why I love following Imagineering so closely. These aren’t just special effects—they’re a sneak peek into the creative minds shaping Disney’s next big experiences.
Whether it’s Pepa’s storm cloud in Encanto, the geysers of Piston Peak, or the fiery magic of a Villains attraction, it’s clear that the future of Disney Parks is bright, bold, and full of imagination.
And honestly? I can’t wait to see these effects in person.
