Disney Imagineering Exploring Next Generation 3D Technology

Hey Disney Vacationers! If there’s one thing we’ve all learned as Disney Parks fans, it’s this — Imagineering never stops chasing the next big “wow.” From Audio-Animatronics to trackless rides to projection mapping, every generation has its breakthrough. And now, Walt Disney Imagineering is exploring what might be the next one: next-generation 3D holographic LED technology, powered by a partnership with LIMINAL Space through the 2025 Disney Accelerator Program.

Let’s break down what this means, why it matters, and how it could change the way we experience Disney attractions in the near future.

What Is the Disney Accelerator Program?

Now in its 11th year, the Disney Accelerator Program connects Disney with pioneering startups pushing boundaries in creativity and technology.

As David Min, VP of Innovation for The Walt Disney Company, explained, the program gives Disney “a dedicated structure to embrace emerging technologies and create new storytelling experiences at the pace audiences expect.”

These aren’t student projects. The companies selected already operate at scale — and Disney helps them evolve through investment, mentorship, and collaboration with Imagineers, Disney Experiences, and other divisions.

Past participants include names you’ll recognize — Epic Games, Eleven Labs, and Kahoot! — all known for rethinking what’s possible in digital entertainment.

The 2025 Disney Accelerator Lineup

The 2025 class features four impressive companies leading across animation, mobile storytelling, large-scale fabrication, and immersive display tech:

  • Animaj – Creates digital-native animation brands powered by AI-enabled production pipelines.
  • DramaBox – A mobile-first vertical microdrama platform redefining short-form storytelling.
  • Haddy – An AI-powered 3D printing company producing recyclable, large-scale set pieces.
  • LIMINAL Space – The one Imagineering fans are watching closely — a company creating holographic 3D LED displays that let people step into a story together, no bulky headset required.

The LIMINAL Partnership: Where Imagineering Meets Holographic 3D

At the 2025 Disney Accelerator Demo Day on November 6, LIMINAL Space stole the show with its revolutionary display technology.

They introduced two products — the Ghost Tile and the Spirit Tile — modular LED panels that project volumetric, holographic visuals visible to multiple people at once. Instead of isolating each guest inside a VR headset, LIMINAL uses lightweight polarized glasses that allow shared, natural interaction.

CEO Nathan Huber explained that current AR and VR experiences separate people from the world — you can’t see your friends react in real time. LIMINAL’s tech solves that by blending holographic layers into real-world environments through advanced LED optics. It can scale from one guest to an entire theater audience without losing clarity or brightness.

Ryan Pardeiro, COO of LIMINAL Space, said the pop-out depth their screens create is “much stronger than what people are used to seeing.” The result is an image that feels closer, sharper, and more alive than traditional 3D projection ever could.

How Imagineering Could Use It

Emily “EMO” O’Brien, Portfolio Executive Creative Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, was quick to recognize the potential. She brought in teams from every corner of WDI — creative, show systems, R&D, and international offices — to experience LIMINAL’s demo firsthand.

O’Brien emphasized that Imagineering isn’t only looking at future attractions but how this technology could enhance existing rides, like Star Tours or Mickey’s Philharmagic. She said she wants Imagineers “to think about how to use this technology both to create new worlds and to make the ones we already have even more magical.”

She described the partnership as “really, really exciting,” calling it a chance to turn the page to a new chapter in immersive storytelling.

How LIMINAL Could Change Disney’s 3D Experiences

Jody Gerstner, Executive of Show Systems, explained that LIMINAL’s displays could finally solve the “tunnel vision” problem that plagues current 3D attractions. The technology allows guests to experience depth without distortion or dimming, delivering crisp imagery across the entire field of view.

Leslie Evans, Executive Imagineer within R&D, praised the clarity and brightness of LIMINAL’s visuals, noting that she could see intricate details that typically disappear through standard projection. She added that Imagineers spend countless hours crafting fine details in lighting, textures, and motion, and much of that work often goes unnoticed once filtered through older 3D systems.

“With LIMINAL,” Evans said, “those subtle details finally come through. Guests can see the small touches we’ve always wanted them to notice.”

That combination of high-quality LED imagery and shared visibility could finally deliver a 3D experience that lives up to Imagineering’s storytelling standards.

Guest Experience: The Next Leap in 3D

Disney has already started phasing out traditional 3D from some attractions due to visual strain and quality limits — just look at Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, which will now run in 2D despite being built for 3D projection.

LIMINAL’s holographic LED tech could be the solution that brings 3D back — only better, brighter, and shared. Guests could experience the depth of 3D without discomfort, distortion, or isolation. Everyone in the room sees the same effect from any angle.

That’s not just innovation — that’s accessibility, comfort, and storytelling alignment in one move.

Disney’s Legacy of Innovation Continues

This kind of leap fits perfectly into Disney’s long history of pushing what’s possible:

  • In 1963, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room introduced Audio-Animatronics.
  • In 1982, EPCOT showcased computer-controlled ride systems.
  • In 2017, Pandora – The World of Avatar debuted seamless projection mapping and fluid animatronics.

And now, Imagineering is exploring next-generation 3D technology that could define the next era of Disney Parks.

It’s not a stretch to imagine LIMINAL’s tech showing up in Galaxy’s Edge, Avengers Campus, or even future expansions like Villains Land at Magic Kingdom.

The Demo Day Highlight: Rocket Raccoon Comes Alive

During Demo Day, LIMINAL partnered with Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to create a live, interactive version of Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Using ILM’s markerless motion capture with LIMINAL’s LED tiles, Rocket could move, speak, and react in real time — a full 3D character visible to the entire audience without any headset.

That kind of live, shared realism could easily translate to meet-and-greet spaces or attraction pre-shows, where guests interact with digital characters that look tangibly there.

Could LIMINAL Be the First to Reach the Parks?

So far, no Disney Accelerator company has made it into a park attraction. Haddy, the AI-driven 3D printing company, is also currently working with Imagineering on prop fabrication, and it’s getting close. But, the technology and concept may have greater applications in the Disney Studio space then directly at the parks.

But LIMINAL feels different. Imagineering executives across multiple divisions — creative, R&D, and show systems — have publicly praised the technology and are actively exploring applications. The collaboration looks less like a test and more like the groundwork for something major.

Michael Hundgen, Portfolio Creative Producer at WDI, called LIMINAL’s work “totally unique and mind-bending,” saying that combining their holographic visuals with Disney storytelling is “pure Disney magic.”

If any Accelerator company makes it into the parks first, LIMINAL is the one to watch.

Why It Matters for Guests

For guests, this shift means shared immersion without compromise. You’ll be able to experience lifelike visuals that feel solid and tangible, while still laughing with your family right beside you.

It’s the difference between watching Disney magic and feeling like you’re inside it.

And for Imagineers, it’s validation that their years of detailed visual craftsmanship will finally be seen exactly as they intended — bright, crisp, and alive.

Final Thoughts: The Next Chapter of Disney Immersion

If you’ve ever watched guests reach out during a 3D show trying to “touch” the visuals, you know Disney magic works best when it feels real. LIMINAL’s holographic LED displays take that feeling and scale it for the next generation.

Imagine seeing Mickey, Grogu, or Baymax standing right beside you — no headset, no visual blur, just you and the story sharing the same space.

Walt Disney Imagineering exploring next generation 3D technology isn’t just about new screens — it’s about redefining immersion.

And honestly, as someone who’s been to Disney more than a hundred times, I can’t wait for the day I see that first LIMINAL-powered attraction light up Main Street, Tomorrowland, or beyond.
