Excavators are down below park level. That is the headline.
The Dark Universe third ride at Epic Universe has moved past land clearing and into real excavation. A large ride pit is being dug in the biggest section of the expansion plot behind Monsters Unchained, and a crane-mounted pile driver is now working in the center of the pad. You can see the whole operation from inside the park.
We covered the permits and the early groundbreaking back in August in our Epic Universe expansion update. What has changed since then is the pace. The berm is gone, the statues are gone, an access road is cut, and the ground is open.
Here is exactly what is happening on that site right now, plus the latest on the events building across the park.
Quick Summary
- A ride pit is being excavated in the largest part of the Dark Universe expansion plot.
- Permits describe land preparation for a future three-story structure.
- The first floor will contain at least a ride maintenance bay.
- A crane-mounted pile driver is working in the center of the expansion pad.
- The raised berm behind the Monsters Unchained exterior queue has been flattened.
- The old Universal Monsters Cafe statues were removed about two weeks ago.
- A dirt access road now runs from behind the office trailers to the main construction site.
- Steel is rising at the front of the Celestial Park events building.
How Deep the Dark Universe Third Ride Pit Actually Goes
Recent aerial views (via @bioreconstruct) show the ground being dug out well below the park’s grade level. That sounds dramatic until you know one thing about how Epic Universe was built.
The park’s ground level was raised roughly ten feet before construction started. So this excavation is mostly revealing the original ground that was always there, not carving a basement into bedrock.
That detail matters for expectations. A deep hole does not automatically mean a massive underground show building. It may simply mean crews are working back down to the natural elevation before they build up again.
The Pile Driver Is the Real Signal
A crane-mounted pile driver is now operating in the center of the expansion pad.
Pile driving is foundation work. You do it when you are about to put weight on a spot and you need the ground to hold it. Seeing one on site means the design is settled enough to commit to where the structure sits.
Permits call for land preparation ahead of a three-story building, with a ride maintenance bay on the first floor at minimum. Pair that with pile driving and you have a project that has moved from paperwork into physical commitment.
You Can Watch It From Inside the Park
The work is now visible from inside Epic Universe.
If you are heading through Dark Universe, look past the Monsters Unchained queue area. The crane and the pile driver are in view from the ground. That is a change from a few weeks ago, when the activity was mostly hidden behind the berm.
For anyone who enjoys watching a park get built, this is the good window. Once walls go up, the view closes.
The Berm Is Gone and So Are the Statues
Before the pit, crews focused on removing a small raised berm behind the extended exterior queue for Monsters Unchained. That area is now flat and level with the nearby queue areas.
The old Universal Monsters Cafe statues also finally moved. They were removed about two weeks ago and may have been relocated inside the nearby Team Member building. Either way, they are no longer sitting in an active construction zone, which ends a long-running joke among fans who watched them sit in a field since 2022.
The New Access Road
A path has been cut through the back of the expansion plot to reach the main site, which required removing a sidewalk. That removal was permitted in advance.
A dirt access road now runs along the back of the office trailers and leads all the way to the construction area behind Monsters Unchained.
Access roads are unglamorous and highly informative. Crews build them when they expect to move heavy material in and out repeatedly for a long stretch. This one says the project is planning for volume.

Events Building Update: Steel at the Front
Across the park in Celestial Park, steel is now rising at the front of the new events building.
Most work until now focused on the back section. Permit documents split that back portion between a catering kitchen on the bottom floor and offices on the upper level.
The new framing at the front is shown in documents as restrooms serving the large ballroom. The ballroom itself will be built between that front section and the back section already under construction.
That means the building’s footprint is finally readable from the air. Front restrooms, center ballroom, rear kitchen and offices.
Final Thoughts
The Dark Universe third ride has gone from permits to a pit with a pile driver in it, and the pace has picked up noticeably. The berm is flat, the statues are out, an access road is in, and excavation is down past the artificial grade to the original ground level.
Universal still has not confirmed this expansion publicly. The permits and the construction are doing the confirming instead. Additionally, an official IP or theme has been announced for the new ride. Rumors point to either a Creature from the Black Lagoon or a potential Bride of Frankenstein. Whichever direction Universal chooses, what we know for sure is the attraction will be indoors and reliable, to help address current issues Epic Universe is facing with the number of attractions that close due to reliability and weather.
If you are visiting Epic Universe soon, take the detour through Dark Universe and look past the Monsters Unchained queue. Construction views like this one do not stay open for long.
