The best look yet at Piston Peak’s construction footprint came from 10,000 feet in the air. A U.S. Air Force July 4 flyover of Walt Disney World produced some of the clearest aerial photos of the Piston Peak Magic Kingdom construction we’ve seen yet. If you’ve been watching this project develop, these images put the scale of the build in perspective in a way no ground-level photo can match.

The Flyover: What Flew Over Walt Disney World

The U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 920th Rescue Wing flew over Magic Kingdom and EPCOT at approximately 10:30am on July 4, 2026, as part of Walt Disney World’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The formation included an HC-130 Combat King II aircraft and two HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters, departing from Patrick Space Force Base on Florida’s Space Coast.

The 920th Rescue Wing isn’t just any flyover unit — it’s the Air Force Reserve’s only combat search and rescue unit. The HC-130J is a long-range aircraft designed to carry pararescue teams, coordinate rescue operations, and refuel helicopters mid-flight. The Pave Hawks trailing below are built for day-and-night recovery operations in difficult conditions. It’s a serious piece of military equipment, and seeing it bank over Cinderella Castle on the Fourth of July is a striking image.

What the Aerial Photos Reveal About Piston Peak

Photos and video taken from the rear cargo door of the HC-130 give us the clearest look yet at the full Piston Peak construction footprint behind Magic Kingdom. From above, you can see the sheer scale of the land taking shape — earthworks, structural foundations, and the backstage buildout that ground-level construction walls have kept hidden from guests.

Piston Peak is a Cars-themed land coming to the area behind Frontierland and Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom. The land is themed around the Piston Peak Air Attack Base from the Planes: Fire & Rescue film, bringing a new visual identity to Magic Kingdom’s western edge. Construction has been underway for some time, but aerial views like these show just how much real estate the new land is occupying.

Context: Magic Kingdom’s Two New Lands

Piston Peak is one of two major new lands currently under construction at Magic Kingdom. The second is a Villains-themed land, which will bring Disney’s classic antagonists to life in their own dedicated corner of the park. Both are part of a significant expansion effort that will add meaningful acreage and new attractions to Magic Kingdom’s footprint for the first time in years.

Disney has not announced an opening date for either project. Given the construction progress visible in these aerial shots, we’re clearly still in the earlier phases of the buildout. But scale of work underway suggests the timeline is moving along — and these flyover images are a reminder that progress is happening even when ground-level photos can’t show the full picture.

Why This Is Exciting for Magic Kingdom Fans

If you’ve been to Magic Kingdom recently, you’ve seen the construction walls and heard the distant sounds of building equipment. What you haven’t been able to see is what’s actually happening behind those walls. Aerial views like these fill that gap — and they confirm that Piston Peak is going to be a substantial addition to the park.

For anyone planning a Walt Disney World trip in the next year or two, keeping an eye on Piston Peak’s development timeline is worthwhile. When construction photos start showing rooflines, detailed structures, and themed elements taking shape, you’ll know an opening announcement is getting closer. We’re not there yet — but the footprint is there, and it’s big.

We’ll continue tracking Piston Peak construction updates here. These Air Force flyover photos are a gift — bookmark this one for when you want to show someone just how serious Disney is about expanding Magic Kingdom’s land.
