Hey Disney Vacationers! If you’re a fan of Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, I’ve got some intriguing news for you. It seems like there might be some big changes coming to this beloved resort, thanks to a recent permit filed for extensive work that could last until the end of 2026. Let’s dive into what we know about these new Wilderness Lodge permits and what it could mean for the future of the resort.
The Permit Details
On July 30, 2024, Disney’s Facility Asset Management team filed a Notice of Commencement with the Orange County Comptroller. This permit, assigned to Adena Corporation, is pretty broad, stating only “general construction” as the scope of work. But what’s particularly interesting is the permit’s expiration date: December 25, 2026. Typically, permits like these have a standard expiration date of one year from the filing date. So, when we see a permit with a timeline extending over two years, it usually indicates a larger scope of work is planned.
Who is Adena Corporation?
For those unfamiliar, Adena Corporation is a big player in construction and has partnered with Disney on various projects. Their portfolio includes everything from roller coasters to entertainment venues like the NBA Experience. However, Adena’s involvement doesn’t give us too many clues about the specifics of the project. Historically, they’ve worked on theme park projects alongside Walt Disney Imagineering, but this time the work falls under Disney’s Facility Asset Management. This suggests the project might be more about maintenance and upkeep rather than creative or thematic changes.
What Could This Mean for Wilderness Lodge?
The big question on everyone’s mind is, what exactly will this work entail? Given the involvement of Disney’s Facility Asset Management and the vague term “general construction,” it’s possible this work is focused on refurbishments rather than new attractions or major thematic overhauls. Specifically, this could be related to the Copper Creek Villas & Cabins, part of the Disney Vacation Club (DVC).
During a 2023 condominium association meeting, Disney Vacation Club executives confirmed that a refurbishment of Copper Creek was on the horizon for 2025. This type of project is typically referred to as a “soft goods refurbishment,” which involves updates to things like floor and wall coverings, upholstery, and minor fixtures. So, if you’re hoping for a complete overhaul, it’s more likely we’ll see a refresh rather than a total transformation.
The DVC Refurbishment Trend
In recent years, DVC has been upgrading their properties with popular features like pull-down Murphy Beds. These beds have been a hit, providing more sleeping space without taking up extra room. However, Copper Creek’s unique layout might pose some challenges. For example, the main living spaces in the One and Two Bedroom villas are narrower compared to other DVC resorts, potentially limiting the addition of these beds. Currently, the occupancy for these villas is capped at four guests for a One Bedroom and eight for a Two Bedroom, while other DVC resorts can accommodate one more guest due to the availability of additional sleeping options like sleeper chairs.
What’s Next?
While we don’t have all the details yet, the extended timeline on the permit suggests that work might not start immediately. As of now, Disney Vacation Club hasn’t issued any alerts about construction disruptions, so guests planning to stay at Wilderness Lodge in the near future don’t need to worry about construction noise just yet.
This potential refresh at Wilderness Lodge follows a trend we’re seeing across other DVC properties. For instance, a major renovation recently wrapped up at Disney’s BoardWalk Villas, and a full update is scheduled for Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort starting in September 2024. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas are also slated for an update between now and 2025.
Conclusion
While we’re still speculating about the exact nature of the work, it’s clear that Disney has some significant plans in store for Wilderness Lodge. Whether you’re a regular at the resort or planning your first visit, these updates could enhance your experience and keep the Wilderness Lodge as magical as ever. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the start of this exciting project!
