He started as a Jungle Cruise skipper. Joe Schott takes over as President of Walt Disney World Resort this week, and his first message reflects on a Disney career that began at the very resort he’s about to lead — nearly 45 years ago.
The new Walt Disney World president officially assumes the role on August 6, succeeding Jeff Vahle, who stepped down after 36 years with Disney.
Schott shared a photo alongside Vahle on Main Street, U.S.A. Here’s what he said and what he brings to the job.
Quick Summary
- Joe Schott becomes President of Walt Disney World Resort on August 6
- He succeeds Jeff Vahle, who stepped down after 36 years with Disney
- Schott started at the resort nearly 45 years ago as a part-time Jungle Cruise skipper
- He previously served as President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort
- Most recently he was President of Disney Signature Experiences
- He inherits a resort with around 80,000 cast members and billions in active investment
“Returning Feels a Lot Like Coming Home”
In his message, Schott reflected on a Disney career that started nearly 45 years ago at the very resort he is about to lead.
“When I took a part-time job as a skipper on the Jungle Cruise nearly 45 years ago, I never could have imagined where the journey would lead from there,” he said. “I’ve gone from Florida to Disney destinations around the world and back. Returning to the place where it all began feels a lot like coming home.”
His Priorities From the Start
“My focus is simple: support our Cast Members, deliver exceptional Guest experiences and build on our strong foundation,” he said. “I am honored to be President of Walt Disney World during such an exciting time. With significant investments and growth underway across our property, we have tremendous opportunities ahead.”
Three priorities, listed in that order: Cast Members first, guest experience second, building on the foundation third.
Leaders choose the order of these lists deliberately. Putting Cast Members ahead of guests is a specific signal, particularly for someone taking over a workforce of roughly 80,000 people.
A Tribute to Jeff Vahle
Schott also acknowledged his predecessor before taking the reins.
“I want to thank Jeff Vahle for his leadership and stewardship of Walt Disney World,” he said. “He has helped shape the resort’s success, strengthen our culture and position us for the opportunities ahead. I am honored to follow in his footsteps.”
Vahle spent six years as resort president, overseeing a wave of major attraction openings and setting in motion the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history.
From Skipper to President
Schott started at Walt Disney World as a part-time Jungle Cruise Skipper before rising through senior roles across Disney’s biggest international destinations, including:
- President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort
- Most recently, President of Disney Signature Experiences
Why That Résumé Matters
Two things stand out, and they’re both relevant to what he’s inheriting.
Shanghai Disney Resort is the most complex international project Disney has undertaken — a from-scratch resort in a market with different guest expectations, a government partner, and no existing operational template. Running it requires building systems rather than maintaining them.
Disney Signature Experiences covers Disney Vacation Club, Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney, and Aulani. That’s the premium, high-margin side of the business, and it’s the segment that has been expanding most aggressively.
Combine those and you get a leader with experience in large-scale new construction and in premium experience products — which describes almost exactly what Walt Disney World is doing right now.
What He’s Taking Over
He takes over a resort with around 80,000 cast members and billions of dollars in active investment across its four theme parks.
Specifically in flight:
- Tropical Americas under construction at Animal Kingdom, with Encanto and Indiana Jones attractions targeting 2027
- The largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history
- Carousel of Progress updates coming in 2027
- BoardWalk additions arriving in late 2026, including the Hurly-Burly lounge
- Disney Lakeshore Lodge opening summer 2027
- Ongoing development at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
That’s an unusually full pipeline for a leadership transition. Most handovers happen in quieter periods.
The Jungle Cruise Detail Is Not Just a Nice Story
It’s easy to read “started as a Jungle Cruise skipper” as corporate mythology. It isn’t only that.
Skippers work the front line — they run a ride, deliver a scripted performance dozens of times a day, manage guest flow, and handle whatever the day brings. It’s one of the most demanding operational roles at Magic Kingdom.
A president who has done that job understands what he’s asking of 80,000 people in a way that someone arriving from corporate strategy does not. Whether that translates into different decisions is the open question, but the credibility is real.
The Bottom Line
The new Walt Disney World president is Joe Schott, taking over August 6 from Jeff Vahle after a career that began nearly 45 years ago as a part-time Jungle Cruise skipper at the same resort.
His stated priorities are Cast Members, guest experiences, and building on the existing foundation. His background spans Shanghai Disney Resort and Disney Signature Experiences.
“Thank you for the warm welcome,” he said. “I am grateful for the opportunity and excited for what lies ahead.”
