It’s official. Epic Universe is getting its first new attraction since opening day, and it’s going exactly where fans have been watching the dirt move all fall. Universal Orlando has announced a new Dark Universe coaster, an indoor roller coaster that will sit right next to Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.
Construction is already underway. The catch? Universal hasn’t shared an opening date beyond “in the years ahead,” so this isn’t one you’ll be riding on your next trip.
We’ve been tracking this plot of land since August, from the first land clearing to the pit that showed up in September. Now we finally know what’s going in it. Here’s everything Universal confirmed, what’s still a mystery, and what it means for your next Epic Universe visit.
Quick Summary
- Universal Orlando announced a new indoor roller coaster for Dark Universe at Epic Universe
- It will sit next to Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
- The coaster will have an all-new story inspired by the Universal Monsters
- Construction is already underway
- Universal only says it will open “in the years ahead”
- The name, ride system, height requirement, and featured monsters haven’t been announced
- It’s the first new attraction announced for Epic Universe since the park opened
What We Know About the New Dark Universe Coaster
Universal kept the announcement short. Here’s everything confirmed so far:
- Type: Indoor roller coaster
- Location: Dark Universe, beside Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
- Story: An all-new story inspired by the Universal Monsters
- Status: Construction has started
- Opening: “In the years ahead”
That’s it for now. Universal says more details will come at a later date.
What Universal Hasn’t Revealed Yet
The list of unknowns is longer than the list of facts:
- The name of the coaster
- The ride system
- The height requirement
- Which monsters will appear
- An opening year
That last one matters most for trip planning. “In the years ahead” is about as vague as it gets. Plan your next Epic Universe trip around what’s open today, not this coaster.
Why Dark Universe Needs a Third Ride
Dark Universe currently has two attractions:
- Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, the land’s big dark ride
- Curse of the Werewolf, a family coaster
That’s not a lot of ride capacity for one of the park’s most popular lands. A new indoor thrill coaster gives Dark Universe a third ride and should help spread out crowds. It also gives thrill fans another reason to spend time in the land after dark, when the gothic village of Darkmoor really shines.
An indoor coaster is a smart choice for Florida, too. It runs in the rain, it’s out of the heat, and it lets Universal control lighting, effects, and storytelling in a way an outdoor coaster can’t.
The Rumors Were Pointing Here
If you’ve been following our coverage, this announcement won’t be a total surprise. We watched land prep begin in Dark Universe in August, followed by dirt moving on the site. In September, the third Dark Universe ride had a pit.
For years, the popular theory was a Creature from the Black Lagoon boat ride. But newer rumors, which we covered in our look at why the Bride of Frankenstein rumor is winning, pointed to an indoor roller coaster instead. Universal’s announcement confirms the indoor coaster part.
What Universal has not confirmed is which monster leads the story. The Bride of Frankenstein is still just a rumor. All Universal has said is that the coaster will feature an all-new story inspired by the Universal Monsters. Until Universal names the characters, treat any specific monster as speculation.
What Else Is Coming to Universal Orlando
The new Dark Universe coaster is one of several projects on the way across Universal Orlando Resort:
- Universal Horror Make-Up Show featuring Blumhouse: A reimagined show opening later this year at Universal Studios Florida
- Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift: A high-speed roller coaster opening in 2027 at Universal Studios Florida
- New Jurassic Park restaurant: A signature full-service restaurant opening in 2027 at Islands of Adventure
- Luke Combs’ Category 10: A music and entertainment venue opening at Universal CityWalk in late 2027
Put together, that’s a lot of new reasons to visit Universal Orlando over the next couple of years.
Tips for Your Next Dark Universe Visit
The coaster is years away, but Dark Universe is already worth your time:
- Ride Monsters Unchained early or late. It’s one of the park’s most popular rides, so rope drop or the last hour usually means shorter waits.
- Visit after dark. Darkmoor’s atmosphere is at its best once the sun goes down.
- Keep an eye on the construction. You may be able to spot progress from around the land on each visit.
- Watch for official updates. Universal has promised more details, and the name and featured monsters are what fans want to know most.
The Bottom Line
The new Dark Universe coaster is official: an indoor roller coaster next to Monsters Unchained, with an all-new Universal Monsters story and construction already underway. It’s the first new attraction announced for Epic Universe since the park opened.
Universal hasn’t shared the name, ride system, featured monsters, or an opening year, so this one is a long-term project. For now, enjoy Dark Universe as it is, and keep watching the construction walls. We’ll share every new detail as soon as Universal releases it.
