Disney Reveals a New Big Thunder Mountain Backstory Ahead of 2026 Reopening

New Big Thunder Mountain Backstory

Hey Disney Vacationers! Big Thunder Mountain isn’t just getting a smoother track. It’s getting a whole new story. Disney has shared a new Big Thunder Mountain backstory as part of the attraction’s massive refurbishment project at Magic Kingdom, and it changes how we experience the “wildest ride in the wilderness.”

Big Thunder Mountain Refurbishment Timeline

If you’ve been to Frontierland lately, you know Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently closed for refurbishment. Disney is replacing the roller coaster track from top to bottom. The project is big enough that the attraction is scheduled to reopen sometime in early 2026.

Along with the track replacement, Disney promised the ride would return with “new magic.” We’ve now got a better idea of what that means: new scenes, new concept art, and an updated backstory that ties the whole experience together.

New Big Thunder Mountain Backstory

The New Backstory: Barnabas T. Bullion

The fresh narrative introduces Barnabas T. Bullion, the founder of the Big Thunder Mining Company. Bullion struck gold in the Big Thunder region, sparking dreams of fortune. But gold comes with a cost.

Strange, unexplainable things started happening in the mines. Machines failed. Cave-ins shut operations down. No matter how deep the miners dug, the mountain seemed to fight back. The forces of Big Thunder were alive, and they weren’t about to let anyone strip the land without consequences.

Here’s the official description Disney released:

“The story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad begins when Barnabas T. Bullion struck gold in the Big Thunder region. One day, strange and unexplainable things started happening. No matter how deep the miners dug into the heart of the mountain, the forces of Big Thunder fought back.

After you arrive at the legendary Big Thunder Mining Company, descend into an active mine shaft and board your runaway train. As you enter the cavern, the engine speeds up along the rickety track then, drop into canyons and dart through the town of Tumbleweed.

Your rip-roaring adventure proves that some legends are true. You’re sure to have a real blast!”

Old vs. New Backstory

Disney has changed a few important details that long-time fans will notice:

ElementOld BackstoryNew Backstory
Mine StatusAbandoned minesActive mines
Town of TumbleweedGhost townLiving mining town
Core StoryMystery forces haunting an empty mountainNature fighting back against greedy expansion

By reframing the attraction around active mines and a working town, the story feels more immersive. Guests will board trains that feel like part of a functioning operation instead of touring through a deserted site.

A Nod to Disney Imagineering History

Barnabas T. Bullion isn’t just a random character. His inclusion connects to Walt Disney Imagineer Tony Baxter, the creative mind behind Big Thunder Mountain. Bullion is seen as a tribute to Baxter, adding another layer of storytelling for fans who love Disney’s deep cuts and Imagineering Easter eggs.

What Might Still Change

Disney has not confirmed if the ride will receive the explosive finale update added to Disneyland’s version of Big Thunder Mountain. In Anaheim, the final lift hill features dynamite effects that transform the climax of the ride. Rumors have circulated for years that Magic Kingdom’s version would eventually see the same upgrade.

Right now, Disney is keeping quiet. They could be saving this as a surprise announcement closer to reopening, or the plan may have shifted during the refurbishment timeline. According to Jim Hill of the Disney Dish Podcast, the addition of the projection dynamite effects for the lift hill is still in the plans. Jim mentioned this on the August 18, 2025, episode of the podcast.

Why This Matters

The new Big Thunder Mountain backstory shows that Disney isn’t just refreshing the ride mechanically. They’re rethinking how story and thrill combine. The change from a ghost town to an active mining town makes the attraction feel more alive, and adding Barnabas T. Bullion gives us a character to anchor the chaos around the runaway trains.

For Disney fans, this is storytelling at its best. The mountain is no longer just a backdrop—it’s a character fighting back, making every ride a legend in motion.

Final Thoughts

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will return in 2026 with a brand-new track, new scenes, and a new backstory that deepens the lore of Frontierland. The addition of Barnabas T. Bullion, the shift from abandoned to active mines, and the reimagined town of Tumbleweed prove that Disney is serious about keeping this classic attraction fresh while staying true to its roots.

Until then, we wait—but one thing’s for sure: the wildest ride in the wilderness is about to get even wilder.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
