Magic Kingdom Ferry Boat Queue Expansion Gets Green Light from Water Management District

Big news for fans of the classic Magic Kingdom ferry experience — Disney has received official approval to expand the ferry boat queue at Seven Seas Lagoon. The South Florida Water Management District has greenlit Disney’s permit application for the Magic Kingdom Ferry Boat Queue Expansion project, clearing the way for some much-needed improvements to one of Walt Disney World’s most iconic transportation options.

What’s Being Approved

Disney filed the permit application earlier this year, and the Water Management District’s approval now allows construction to begin on three key elements: dock expansion, hardscape improvements, and a floodplain compensation area at the ferry boarding location. The project focuses on expanding waiting areas and boarding facilities at the Magic Kingdom ferry dock, addressing what has long been a pinch point for guests — especially during peak arrival and departure times.

If you’ve ever tried to catch the last ferry back to the Transportation and Ticket Center after fireworks, you know exactly what we’re talking about. The queue can get absolutely packed, and expanded waiting areas will be a welcome relief for guests navigating one of Walt Disney World’s busiest transit moments.

A Decade of Ferry Upgrades

This latest project continues a decade-long investment in ferry infrastructure at Walt Disney World. The improvements are part of a broader pattern of upgrades Disney has been making to this beloved transportation system:

• 2014: Disney added a second ferry boat dock at both the Transportation and Ticket Center and the Magic Kingdom shorelines, effectively doubling boarding capacity.
• 2021: Disney added second-level unloading capability at both docks, allowing guests to exit from two levels of the ferry boats simultaneously and significantly speeding up the disembarkation process.
• 2026: Expanded queue areas and hardscape improvements now approved and pending construction.

No Timeline Yet

As is typical with these kinds of permit approvals, Disney has not yet announced an official construction timeline. Permit approval is just the green light — the actual start date and duration of work is still to be determined. It’s worth keeping an eye on construction activity at the Seven Seas Lagoon ferry dock if you have a trip coming up, as there may be temporary impacts to the boarding experience while work is underway.
