Ways to Meet Characters at Universal Orlando
Universal gives you several different formats for character interactions, and each one hits differently. Here’s how they break down:
Parades
The Universal Mega Movie Parade at Universal Studios Florida runs daily in the afternoon or early evening. It features characters from Despicable Me, Shrek, SING, Trolls, and more rolling through Hollywood, New York, and past Transformers. Note that the parade takes a hiatus during Mardi Gras season.
During the holidays, the Universal Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s replaces it. This one brings Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons, Universal characters, and Santa Claus — all in one nightly show.
Dance Parties and Shows
Small dance parties with Mega Movie characters happen outside the Horror Make-Up Show throughout the day. Characters appear on floats or on an elevated stage alongside performers — it’s a great low-commitment way to catch a character interaction without waiting in a meet & greet line.
At DreamWorks Land, the DreamWorks Imagination Celebration is a high-energy kid-friendly show where guests dance alongside their favorite DreamWorks characters. King Julien does appear. Check the Universal app for show times.
Character Meals
Two character dining experiences are available at Universal Orlando:
Marvel Character Dinner at Cafe 4 — The only Marvel character meal in Orlando. Captain America, Wolverine, Storm, and Rogue join you for a buffet dinner with pasta, pizza, chicken, shrimp, and desserts. Prices start at $57 for adults and $32 for children (tax not included). Reservations available online.
Grinch Character Breakfast (seasonal) — Available during the holidays at Circus McGurkis Cafe Stoopendous in Seuss Landing. Green eggs included, naturally. Prices start at $59 for adults and $33 for children (tax not included).
Standard Meet and Greets
This is the bread and butter of Universal character experiences. Some meet & greets are in fixed locations — like Bumblebee and Megatron stationed between Transformers and Mel’s Dine-In. Others are spontaneous, like Doc Brown wandering Hollywood or Marilyn Monroe appearing unexpectedly.
DreamWorks and Despicable Me characters also pop up at Universal Orlando hotels during busy periods like weekends and holidays, which is a great perk if you’re staying on-site.
Every Character at Universal Orlando (By Land and IP)
Here’s the full rundown of who you can meet and where to find them:
Universal Monsters (Epic Universe – Darkmoor)
Epic Universe’s Darkmoor land is where monsters are real — and meetable. Frankenstein and his Bride have a dedicated meet & greet area, the Invisible Man wanders the land, and Ygor (Victoria’s assistant) is found near the front of the land. For even more Monster content, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights in the fall is where the franchise really shines.
Harry Potter
Due to Warner Bros. licensing restrictions, you won’t find face-character versions of Harry, Ron, Hermione, or Dumbledore walking the parks. Their appearances are limited to their attractions.
What you can find: the Hogwarts Express conductor in Hogsmeade, the Knight Bus attendant outside Diagon Alley, and in Epic Universe’s Wizarding World — international Hogwarts students, a sneaky Auror near Bar Moonshine, and Cosme Acajor, the wand maker, at her shop.
Marvel (Islands of Adventure – Marvel Super Hero Island)
Spider-Man, Avengers, and Fantastic Four characters meet in their comics-accurate costumes throughout Marvel Super Hero Island. The Marvel Character Dinner (Captain America, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue) is available on select nights at Cafe 4.
Nintendo (Epic Universe – Super Nintendo World)
Let’s-a go! Mario and Luigi meet at the central warp pipe in Super Nintendo World. Princess Peach is in her gazebo. Donkey Kong meets outside his house by a pile of bananas in the Donkey Kong Country section. These are among the most popular meet & greets at Epic Universe — expect lines.
How to Train Your Dragon (Epic Universe – Isle of Berk)
This is a highlight. Toothless, Hiccup, and Astrid all meet next to the Untrainable Dragon show, including during Early Park Admission. Ruffnut and Tuffnut roam near their attraction and the Mead Hall. Gobber the Belch is at the smithing stall. And keep your eyes open — there’s a very cute walking dragon that wanders between Toothless’s meet & greet area and the restrooms.
Despicable Me and Minions (Minion Land)
The Minions, Gru, and the girls meet near Bake My Day in Minion Land. They also appear in both the Mega Movie Parade and the Universal Holiday Parade.
The Simpsons (Universal Studios Florida – Springfield)
Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Krusty, and Sideshow Bob all meet in Springfield between The Simpsons Ride and the Kwik-E-Mart. If they’re not there, check the Hollywood section of the park.
DreamWorks Characters
Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona meet at Shrek’s House Swamp Meet in DreamWorks Land. Characters from Trolls, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar appear at the DreamWorks Imagination Celebration show. Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar characters also meet in Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure.
Dr. Seuss (Islands of Adventure – Seuss Landing)
The Cat in the Hat, the Things, and a fursuit version of the Grinch are all in Seuss Landing. The face-character Grinch (Jim Carrey movie version) appears only during the holidays — either at the character breakfast or in the Grinchmas Wholiday Spectacular show.
Other Characters You Might Spot
Universal draws from an enormous entertainment library. Here are more characters roaming the parks:
- Doc Brown (Back to the Future) near the DeLorean outside Animal Actors or in Hollywood
- Scooby-Doo and the Gang in Hollywood
- The Blues Brothers in New York, after their show
- Marilyn Monroe, Lucy Ricardo, and other vintage celebrity face characters in Hollywood
- SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward in their store in Central Park
- Popeye, Olive Oyl, Betty Boop, and other classic comic strip characters in Toon Lagoon
- Velociraptors from Jurassic World at the Raptor Encounter in Jurassic Park
Tips for the Best Character Meet and Greets at Universal Orlando
A few things that’ll make your character experiences better:
- Characters are not in CityWalk or Volcano Bay (except at special events)
- For specific character times, check the Universal Orlando app or ask guest relations
- Many encounters are spontaneous — keep your phone or camera out and ready
- Autograph books are sold at major gift shops throughout the parks
- DreamWorks and Despicable Me characters also appear at on-site hotels on busy days — a bonus if you’re staying at a Universal resort
The Bottom Line on How to Meet Characters at Universal Orlando
Universal Orlando’s character lineup is bigger and more diverse than most people realize. Between Epic Universe expanding the roster with Nintendo, How to Train Your Dragon, and Universal Monsters, and the long-running meet & greets at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, there’s no shortage of photo opportunities.
Go in with a plan — know which characters matter most to your group, download the app, and keep your camera ready for the spontaneous ones. Whether you’re chasing down Toothless in Epic Universe or hunting for Homer Simpson in Springfield, these character moments are what turn a great theme park day into a truly unforgettable one.
