Hey Disney Vacationers! Disneyland just made a big change to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. And honestly, this is something many fans have hoped for since the land opened.
The Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge timeline is changing, and that shift will bring classic characters like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and more into the land. This update officially moves Galaxy’s Edge away from the strict timeline it launched with in 2019.
If you ever felt like Galaxy’s Edge was impressive but missing familiar faces, this announcement directly addresses that.
Quick Summary
- Disneyland is unlocking the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge timeline beginning April 29, 2026.
- The land will now include characters and stories from multiple Star Wars eras.
- Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Chewbacca will appear in Black Spire Outpost.
- The land will no longer exist only between Episodes 8 and 9.
- Some areas will still reflect the Age of the Resistance.
Why the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Timeline Is Changing
When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened in 2019, Imagineering said the land existed strictly between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Batuu was locked into a very specific moment in Star Wars history.
That decision gave the land structure. It also limited which characters could appear.
Over time, Disney began to loosen that rule. The biggest shift came in May 2022, when Imagineering confirmed the land would slowly include characters from different points in Batuu’s history.
Now, Disneyland has taken the largest step yet.
Disneyland’s Announcement: What’s Officially Changing
Disneyland shared a full statement explaining how the Galaxy’s Edge timeline is changing and what guests can expect. Here is what Disneyland said:
We have a good feeling about this. Disneyland Resort is unlocking the timeline at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in the biggest way yet.
Fans know that Batuu has played a role in the history of the galaxy for hundreds of years on the Outer Rim. Beginning April 29, 2026, visitors will be invited to immerse themselves in different points of the Star Wars saga inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland park as they never have before with characters and storylines that capture the heart of what draws guests to this galaxy far, far away. These exciting updates to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will enable visitors to experience even more of the eras of Star Wars.
New storylines will be brought to life on Batuu, spanning multiple eras of the planet’s rich history. These updates will enable you to experience the Galactic Civil War and New Republic, as well as the Age of the Resistance and First Order.
Black Spire Outpost will roll back in time several decades, thoughtfully introducing beloved characters from across the Star Wars timeline, new props and graphics in some areas, musical selections from Star Wars film scores throughout the land and more.
This confirms that Galaxy’s Edge will now represent multiple eras, not one locked moment.
Darth Vader Is Coming to Galaxy’s Edge
Yes. This is the headline moment.
Darth Vader will appear on Batuu as part of the Galactic Civil War era.
Disneyland explained it like this:
Cue “The Imperial March.” Darth Vader’s search for Luke Skywalker will bring him to Batuu. This Sith Lord will be joined by Imperial Stormtroopers, and as they seek the elusive Jedi, they may find hints of the Force around the outpost.
For many fans, Vader missing from Galaxy’s Edge always felt strange. That gap is now gone.
Luke, Leia, Han, and More Will Appear on Batuu
The original trilogy heroes are also coming to Black Spire Outpost.
Disney confirmed the following character appearances:
Leia Organa and Han Solo will be reunited with Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca amid the rocky spires.
Luke Skywalker will roam the outpost seeking knowledge of the Force and artifacts related to lightsaber building, kyber crystals, and more.
Leia Organa may be spotted near the Millennium Falcon, where she’ll recruit travelers and locals to help keep Luke safe.
Han Solo also will linger around his prized ship, tempted by the local cantina.
This places familiar characters directly in locations guests already connect with, like the Millennium Falcon.
What Is Staying the Same in Galaxy’s Edge
Not everything is changing.
The forested Resistance camp will continue to reflect the Age of the Resistance.
Disneyland clarified:
The forested area on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost will continue to represent a time inspired by the Age of the Resistance. You may find Rey around this Resistance camp, and if you’re bold enough, become a hero yourself in a climactic battle with the First Order aboard Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
This keeps Rise of the Resistance intact while allowing other areas of the land to represent earlier eras.
Shops and Locations Will Reflect Different Eras
The Galaxy’s Edge timeline change also affects stores and settings across Batuu.
Here’s what is confirmed:
First Order Cargo
First Order Cargo will transform into Black Spire Surplus, a military salvage operation offering artifacts from across the history of the galaxy, including Imperial and Rebel items from the Galactic Civil War.
Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities
As antiquities shops often do, Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities will display a different array of one-of-a-kind items from its past.
Droid Depot
An earlier generation of the Mubo family will operate Droid Depot, where they will be prototyping the BB style of droid.
Savi’s Workshop
In his search for information on lightsabers and the Force, Luke Skywalker will be interested in meeting with Savi.
Guests will still be able to build droids and lightsabers, but the story framing will reflect different points in time.
This Isn’t the First Time the Timeline Shifted
Back in May 2022, Imagineering already signaled that Galaxy’s Edge would not stay locked forever.
At that time, Scott Trowbridge said:
‘We are committed to the long history of Batuu and the collection of amazing characters who inhabit the outpost including our legacy characters and original characters and know that we will feel the same about new and future characters from the ever-expanding galaxy of Star Wars storytelling. While we as visitors may be able to experience different stories throughout Star Wars history, the characters on Batuu can not. They will remain in their specific story and timeline and won’t intersect with other characters or stories that would not be appropriate for them.’
The new Disneyland announcement shows how that idea has now expanded further.
What This Means for Guests
This change solves a long-standing issue.
Many guests knew Star Wars characters, but could not meet them inside Galaxy’s Edge. That disconnect is now gone.
More eras mean more familiar faces.
More familiar faces mean stronger emotional connections.
Stronger connections improve the experience for first-time and repeat visitors.
This also helps families who may not connect as strongly with sequel-era characters alone.
My Thoughts
This is a smart move.
Galaxy’s Edge is one of the most detailed lands Disney has ever built. But the strict timeline created limits that guests never asked for.
Allowing Darth Vader, Luke, Leia, and Han into the land makes Galaxy’s Edge feel complete. It also keeps the land flexible for the future. And, ultimately is more closely aligned with Walt Disney Imagineering’s original concept of the land being themed to the original trilogy.
I also hope this is a sign of what could happen at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, especially after the closure of Star Wars Launch Bay. The demand is clearly there.
For now, Disneyland fans are getting exactly what they asked for.
And that’s a win.
