First Look at the Tsukán Model for the Indiana Jones Ride

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The head alone dwarfs a person. Walt Disney Imagineering has shared images of a detailed scale model of the Tsukán — the giant serpentine creature at the heart of Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent — on display at D23 in Anaheim.

Quick Summary

  • WDI displayed a scale model of the Tsukán at D23
  • It sits alongside a human-scale figure for comparison
  • The serpent’s head alone dwarfs the figure beneath it
  • The full-size animatronic is being sculpted by hand
  • The creature appears throughout the ride, building to a final confrontation
  • The attraction opens in Tropical Americas in 2027

What the Model Shows

The Tsukán is displayed alongside a human-scale figure, and the size difference is genuinely startling.

The serpent’s head alone dwarfs the figure standing beneath it.

The Audio-Animatronics figure being built for the attraction is described as massive, completely towering over the Imagineers working on it, and is being sculpted by hand.

If the model is any indication of the final product, the full-size version is going to be something else entirely.

Putting the Scale in Context

It’s worth calibrating what “towering over Imagineers” actually means, because Disney’s largest figures set a high bar.

The Yeti in Expedition Everest stands roughly 25 feet tall and weighs about 20,000 pounds — the largest and most complex animatronic Disney had built when it opened in 2006. The Na’vi Shaman of Songs in Flight of Passage is widely considered the most sophisticated figure in the parks, though not the largest.

A serpent whose head alone dwarfs a person implies a creature far longer than it is tall — which is a different engineering problem than a standing figure. A snake’s motion is its whole body, not just its limbs and face.

The hand-sculpting detail is the one to notice. Modern figures often use 3D-scanned and machine-milled forms. Hand-sculpting at that scale is a deliberate choice, and an expensive one.

The Creature’s Role in the Ride

As revealed by Imagineers Michael Hundgen and Chris Beatty at D23, the Tsukán appears throughout the attraction, building to a final confrontation at the end.

The creature is described as a serpentine guardian of the cenote — the underground cave near the ancient Maya temple — with local legend holding that it protects the passage to the Maya Underworld.

Chris Beatty suggested the final confrontation would permanently solidify a fear of snakes for most guests.

Why “Appears Throughout” Is the Right Structure

Building the creature into the whole ride rather than saving it for one moment is a meaningful choice, and it addresses a problem the original Indiana Jones Adventure has.

Disneyland’s 1995 attraction ends with a rolling boulder — a great effect, but the ride’s threats are largely environmental: darts, snakes, lava, collapsing bridges. There’s no single antagonist stalking you.

A creature that shows up repeatedly builds dread rather than delivering a jump scare. It’s the structure Jaws used, and the structure the Yeti was supposed to use in Expedition Everest before the figure broke.

Which raises the obvious question. Disney’s last attempt at a massive, hand-built, ride-defining creature animatronic has spent nineteen years in strobe-lit “b mode.” The Yeti repair was confirmed at this same D23, so the company clearly knows the stakes.

Building an even larger figure as the centerpiece of a new attraction is a statement of confidence. Whether the engineering has improved enough to avoid a repeat is the question fans will reasonably ask.

The Tsukán Is Real Folklore

Worth stating clearly, because it’s easy to assume Disney invented the creature.

The Tsukán is an element of Yucatec Maya tradition — a serpent associated with cenotes, guardianship, and the passage to the underworld. It isn’t a Hollywood monster given a vaguely Maya-sounding name.

That matters given the film franchise’s history. Indiana Jones has a genuinely uncomfortable record with how it depicts non-Western cultures, Temple of Doom especially. Building an attraction on Maya cosmology invites that scrutiny.

Disney says the project team consulted archaeologists, anthropologists, and Maya experts, and the Tsukán being an authentic tradition rather than an invention supports the claim that the consultation was substantive.

Cenotes were regarded by the Maya as literal entrances to Xibalba, the underworld. The attraction’s premise isn’t dressed-up mythology — it’s the actual belief system.

The Snake Payoff

Beatty’s line about permanently solidifying a fear of snakes is doing deliberate work.

“Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes?” is among the most quoted lines in the franchise, and Indy’s ophidiophobia is one of the character’s few consistent traits across five films.

Ending an Indiana Jones attraction with an enormous serpent is the payoff to a forty-five-year running joke. It’s the most obvious possible choice and simultaneously the correct one — the kind of decision that only looks easy after someone makes it.

When It Opens

Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent opens as part of Tropical Americas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2027.

The attraction replaces DINOSAUR, which closed in January 2024. Construction footage from WDI’s D23 video shows steel being set for the Maya temple facade, with installation expected in the coming weeks and rock work materials already being delivered.

Of the four major Walt Disney World lands under construction, Tropical Americas is the furthest along.

The Bottom Line

The Tsukán scale model at D23 shows a serpent whose head alone dwarfs a human figure, built by hand as the centerpiece animatronic of Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent.

It appears throughout the attraction rather than only at the climax, guarding the cenote passage to the Maya Underworld.

The ride opens with Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom in 2027.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
