Hey Universal Vacationers! After years of hype, construction updates, leaks, rumors, and a few teaser videos that made our jaws drop—Epic Universe is finally opening. On Thursday, May 22, 2025, Universal’s most ambitious theme park ever will welcome its first guests for the official grand opening. If you’ve got tickets in hand (and congrats if you do—day one is sold out), this guide is your game plan.
I’ve pulled together all the key Epic Universe grand opening details so you can get the most out of the big day.
What’s Actually Happening on Opening Day?
Let’s get the one bummer out of the way first: the official “Grand Opening Celebration” is a private media and VIP event happening May 20–21. So, if you’re visiting May 22, you won’t see a big parade or stage show to kick things off.
However, Universal has announced a “brief celebratory moment” at 8 AM EST on May 22 as they open the gates. It won’t be a massive show, but if you’re there early, you’ll at least get a little opening magic before diving into the park.
Epic Universe Grand Opening Celebration Live Stream
Even though the big celebration is invite-only, Universal Orlando Resort will live stream the Grand Opening celebration of Epic Universe on May 21, 2025. This gives fans at home a chance to witness the event before the park officially opens to the public.
Universal announced the live stream via social media and offered a link where guests can sign up to receive reminders.
Live Stream Details:
- When: Wednesday, May 21, 2025
- Where: Streaming live from Epic Universe
- Time: Blue carpet begins at 6 PM, celebration starts at 7 PM
If you’re not visiting the park but still want to be part of the moment, this stream is your front-row seat to the next big leap in theme park history.

A Quick Look at the Five Epic Universe Lands
Yes, there are five fully themed lands inside Epic Universe. And they’re not half-baked overlays. These are full-blown, immersive areas. Here’s what’s waiting beyond the portals:
1. Celestial Park
This is your entry hub. Think lush gardens, water features, roaming entertainment, a dual-launch roller coaster (Starfall Racers), and Universal’s version of a nighttime spectacular.
2. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Set in 1920s Paris and London, this land features the all-new Harry Potter: Battle at the Ministry ride. No Express Pass available and wait times during soft openings hit 300 minutes—so plan wisely.
3. How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Perfect for families, this land brings DreamWorks’ hit franchise to life with a family coaster, interactive shows, and play zones.
4. Super Nintendo World
You’ll literally step into a video game. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge headlines here, but don’t overlook the Power-Up Band activities and restaurant inside Toadstool Café.
5. Dark Universe
Universal Monsters fans, this is your spot. Expect eerie vibes, a dark ride featuring Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, and walk-around creatures that are far from cuddly.
Opening Day Merchandise and Collectibles
Universal hasn’t officially listed opening day exclusive merchandise—yet. But if history is any indicator (see: VelociCoaster or Super Nintendo World Hollywood), expect limited-edition opening day pins, apparel, mugs, and lanyards.
These items will sell out fast and likely be limited to one-per-guest. If grabbing a souvenir is a priority for you, head to the main shops in Celestial Park first. There will also be land-specific merchandise in each area.
What to Expect with Crowds and Rides
It’s going to be busy. Even if ticket are limited, Epic Universe will feel full. Here’s what we know based on soft opening patterns:
- Harry Potter: Battle at the Ministry has had long downtimes and extreme waits. No Express Pass. Consider rope-dropping or closing the day with it.
- Dark Universe and Berk have had minor downtime issues. Universal has been testing and tweaking systems every day.
- Super Nintendo World has two major attractions, with Mine-Cart Madness tending to have the longer waits due to overall ride capacity.
What is unknown at this time is if Universal Orlando will use Virtual Queues to enter each of the lands on opening day. We do know they can do this, if needed. This is something to keep an eye on. If Universal Orlando does deploy the Virtual Queue, you will need to have the Universal Orlando app downloaded on your phone.
Pro tip: Ride Starfall Racers later in the day if you can. This dual-launch coaster is in Celestial Park, so it doesn’t require a portal to enter. Additionally, during the soft opening, it has shown to have great capacity and reliability with lower wait times.
Final Thoughts
Epic Universe isn’t just another theme park—it’s a major shift in what we expect from theme park design. From the themed lands with portal entrances to cutting-edge rides and immersive dining, this is Universal’s biggest swing yet. And opening day marks the start of something huge.
While the grand celebration may be reserved for VIPs, just being there on day one makes you part of theme park history. Expect big crowds, some hiccups, and a lot of buzz—but also that feeling of exploring something brand new before most of the world.
