Disney just created a job that never existed before. The Walt Disney Company has named Karandeep Anand as its first Chief Technology Officer, a new role putting him in charge of technology strategy across the entire company under CEO Josh D’Amaro.
Anand joins as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer effective October 2, reporting directly to D’Amaro. He comes from Character.AI, where he served as CEO.
For parks fans, the interesting part isn’t the hire itself. It’s what creating this role says about where D’Amaro is pointing the company.
Quick Summary
- Who: Karandeep Anand, Disney’s first-ever Chief Technology Officer
- Starts: October 2, as Senior Executive Vice President and CTO
- Reports to: CEO Josh D’Amaro
- Comes from: Character.AI, where he was CEO
- Oversees: Enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product development, and engineering
- Background: Brex, Meta, and 15 years at Microsoft working on Azure
What the Chief Technology Officer Will Oversee
As CTO, Anand will oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product development, and engineering. He’ll work across Disney’s segment technology teams to modernize how the company builds and delivers technology company-wide.
That last phrase is the key one. Disney’s technology has historically lived inside each business segment: parks had their systems, streaming had theirs, studios had theirs. A company-wide CTO is a structural answer to the problem of building the same thing five times.
Why D’Amaro Made This Role
D’Amaro said Anand’s background fits directly into his priorities for Disney: storytelling, technology in service of creativity, and operating as “One Disney.”
“Karandeep brings a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI, and will be a vital addition to Disney’s senior leadership team,” D’Amaro said. He described Anand as “an expert builder and strategist, technical and product-minded, with sharp instincts for what fans actually want.”
Anand pointed to Disney’s storytelling as the draw. “I’ve admired Disney my entire life for how it blends unforgettable storytelling with the latest technology,” he said, adding that he wants to help “connect fans worldwide with its beloved stories and characters in new and innovative ways.”
Anand’s Background
Before Character.AI, Anand was President and Chief Product Officer at Brex. He also held several roles at Meta’s Facebook, most recently as Vice President of Ads and Business Products.
Earlier in his career, he spent 15 years at Microsoft, where he worked on the Azure platform. He holds a Computer Science degree from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.
That résumé reads as infrastructure first, consumer product second, AI most recently. It’s a builder’s background, not a strategy-consultant background.
This Fits a Clear D’Amaro Pattern
This appointment follows a consistent theme. Since becoming Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products in 2020, D’Amaro has repeatedly pointed to technology as central to Disney’s future:
- Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games
- AI-assisted trip planning
- Next-generation park robotics now in development
On his first day as CEO in March, D’Amaro named technology one of three company-wide priorities. In his first earnings call as CEO in May, he listed “embracing technology” alongside storytelling and streaming as an immediate focus.
Creating a standalone Chief Technology Officer position gives that priority a permanent seat at the leadership table. It also puts one person in charge of carrying it out across every part of the company, from parks to streaming to consumer products.
What It Could Mean for the Parks
Nothing changes on your next trip. But the areas under this role are the same ones that shape park technology over time:
- The My Disney Experience app, which handles everything from dining reservations to Lightning Lane
- Trip planning tools, including the AI-assisted planning D’Amaro has pointed to repeatedly
- Park robotics and animatronics, where Disney has shown free-roaming character prototypes
- Data platforms behind wait times, virtual queues, and crowd management
If you’ve ever been frustrated by the app on a park day, this is the org chart change that theoretically addresses it. Theoretically. Executive appointments take years to show up as guest-facing improvements, and plenty never do.
What to Watch Next
- App improvements that reduce friction rather than add features
- How the Epic Games investment develops into something fans can actually use
- Whether AI planning tools ship or stay in the talking-points stage
- New robotics debuting in attractions rather than in demo videos
What a Company-Wide CTO Usually Changes First
If you want a realistic expectation, look at what this kind of role typically tackles in its first year.
Consolidation comes first. Companies with segment-based technology teams tend to run duplicate systems for the same job: multiple sign-in systems, multiple data pipelines, multiple payment stacks. Unifying those is unglamorous and invisible to customers, but it’s what makes later improvements possible.
Then comes platform work — shared infrastructure that individual teams build on rather than around. That’s when guest-facing changes start showing up, and it’s usually a year or more into the job.
For Disney specifically, the visible test will be whether the pieces of your trip stop feeling like separate products. Tickets, dining, Lightning Lane, resort check-in, and streaming all live in different systems today, and that’s exactly the kind of fragmentation a company-wide CTO exists to address.
The Bottom Line
Disney’s first Chief Technology Officer, Karandeep Anand, starts October 2 reporting to CEO Josh D’Amaro, overseeing enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product, and engineering across the company.
It’s a corporate story with a long fuse. Judge it by whether the park app gets better and the robots leave the lab, not by the press release.
