Aerial photos from the Disney construction tracking account @bioreconstruct on X give us a close look at something exciting: Disney Imagineers are actively testing themed finish mockups for Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom. The mockups are laid out across the WDI project office compound near the construction site, and they give us the clearest visual signals yet about what this new land will actually look and feel like.
What Are Themed Finish Mockups?
Before any themed finish — rock texture, paint color, architectural detail — gets applied at full scale on the actual construction site, Disney Imagineers build smaller test pieces to confirm that colors, textures, and materials look exactly right. It’s a quality control step that’s standard practice in theme park development. What you’re seeing in these aerial photos isn’t the finished product — it’s Disney making sure the finished product will be exactly right.
What the Mockups Show
Looking at the photos, several elements stand out. One mockup appears to match the archway entrance to the land seen in previously released concept art — a strong visual anchor for what guests will see when they first enter Tropical Americas. Other mockups show what look like tropical rainforest rock and vegetation sculptures. These could be destined for a playground area or form part of the interior theming inside the Encanto-based attraction.
The WDI Project Office Compound
The mockup testing is happening at a dedicated WDI project office compound established near the Tropical Americas construction site. Disney sets up these compounds for major expansions to keep Imagineering teams on-site and close to the work. The presence of the compound confirms this is an actively staffed, full-production development — not a project that’s been paused or slowed down.
What Is Tropical Americas?
Tropical Americas is an upcoming expansion of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, anchored by an Encanto-themed attraction. The land draws from the biodiversity and culture of South and Central America, giving Imagineers rich visual material to work with — lush rainforests, vibrant colors, and the specific world of the Madrigal family from Encanto. The mockup textures confirm the tropical rainforest aesthetic is being executed at a detailed level.
The themed finish mockups at Tropical Americas are exactly the kind of behind-the-scenes look that confirms a project is moving at pace. When Imagineers are testing wall textures and entrance archways, the design is locked and construction is executing against a real vision. Animal Kingdom’s Tropical Americas expansion is coming — and based on what these mockups suggest, the attention to detail is going to be significant.
