Disney Flying Theater Ride Patent Flips a Flat Floor Into a Wall of Seats

Disney has a new idea for the next Soarin’-style attraction. A newly published flying theater ride patent shows a system where you walk onto a flat platform, sit down, and then get rotated upright to face a giant screen. Once you’re in position, the whole wall of riders can rise, drop, and tilt along with the film.

It’s a clever twist on the flying theater concept, and it could make these rides faster to load and easier for guests with mobility devices. Here’s how it works.

Quick Summary

  • Disney’s “Flying Theater Ride” patent application was published on October 29, 2026, after being filed on April 25, 2025.
  • Riders load on a flat, level platform, which then rotates about 90 degrees to face a screen.
  • Once upright, the platform can lift, drop, and tilt during the show.
  • The flat loading design could speed up boarding and help guests using wheelchairs, canes, or crutches.
  • A counterweight can return the platform to the loading position if power is lost.
  • The patent doesn’t name a park, attraction, or film.

How the Disney Flying Theater Ride Patent Works

If you’ve ridden Soarin’ at EPCOT, you know the basic idea of a flying theater. You sit in rows, the ride lifts you toward a large screen, and the motion matches the film.

This patent takes a different mechanical approach. The ride moves in two stages:

  • Loading to show position: The seating platform starts flat, like a floor. A rotating hub tilts the whole platform about 90 degrees until it stands nearly vertical, facing the screen.
  • Show movement: Once upright, a set of linked arms and linear actuators moves the platform during the show. It can lift, drop, and tilt forward or backward.

As the platform rotates, the seats pivot so you stay sitting upright. The patent says this can happen with a powered mechanism or with weighted seats that swing naturally as the platform turns. In the fully upright position, the rows of seats stack on top of each other like a wall.

Loading on a Flat Floor

Disney spends a good part of the patent on loading. Because the platform lies flat during boarding, you walk onto a level surface to reach your seat. The patent says this can make loading and unloading faster than other systems, which means more guests can ride each day.

The flat floor also helps guests with disabilities. The patent specifically mentions guests using wheelchairs, canes, or crutches, noting that other ride systems can create a physical barrier. During loading, brakes and the actuators lock the platform in place so it can’t move while you board.

A Larger Theater Version

The patent also shows a much bigger version of the ride, with several long rows that each hold dozens of seats.

At the bottom of the platform is a lip. When the platform is flat, the lip hides part of the screen from view. When the platform is upright, the lip sits below the seats and can catch items riders drop. The patent says the screen could be a projection screen or an LED, LCD, or plasma display.

What You Might Feel

The patent says the motion could create the feeling of flying, falling, jumping, or being launched. It uses a canoe as an example: a film shows a first-person view paddling down a river, and when the canoe goes over a waterfall on screen, the ride tips riders forward to match.

Other effects could be part of the show, including:

  • Live actors, animatronics, or robots
  • Sounds, smells, and lights
  • Haptics, or physical feedback you can feel
  • Pyrotechnics

Bigger Moves From Small Actuators

The arms connecting the platform to the ride machinery work like levers. A small movement at the actuator becomes a larger, faster movement at the platform. According to the patent, that gives the ride more travel distance, speed, and acceleration than moving the platform directly, and smoother motion overall.

Safety and Maintenance

A large counterweight sits behind the hub. It balances the weight of the riders and platform, so the ride can use smaller, cheaper actuators.

The counterweight has a second job. If an actuator breaks or the ride loses power, it can return the platform to the flat loading position on its own. The patent points out that evacuating riders mid-experience is hard on many existing rides. The ride also uses brakes on the hub, with disc, hydraulic, and electromagnetic options listed, and worn actuators can be swapped out by disconnecting the joints at each end.

Will This Ride Be Built?

Disney files a lot of patents, and an application doesn’t mean a ride is coming. This one doesn’t name a park, attraction, or film.

What it does show is that Imagineering is working on a flying theater design that loads faster, works better for guests with mobility devices, and offers more motion than older systems. The Bottom Line

Disney’s new flying theater ride patent flips a flat loading floor into a wall of seats facing a giant screen, then moves the whole platform to match the film. It promises faster loading, easier access for guests with mobility devices, and a built-in safety return. There’s no attraction tied to it yet, but it’s a fun look at where flying theater rides could go next.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
