Disney Drone Patent Widens Claims on Show Technology

Disney widens patent claims for its themed drone show system

Disney just made a quiet legal move that says more about its plans than any announcement has. A new Disney drone patent filing published September 10, 2026 does not describe a new invention. It goes after much broader ownership of the technology behind Disney’s themed drone show system.

That distinction is the whole story. Disney already had a patent here. What it wants now is protection for the underlying system rather than for one specific drone design.

Here is what changed in the filing, what the technology actually does, and why it points toward large themed drones rather than the small-swarm shows you have seen elsewhere.

Quick Summary

  • The new filing, US 2026/0268782, published September 10, 2026
  • It is a continuation of a Disney application originally filed in July 2019
  • That original became granted patent US 12,230,153 on February 18, 2025
  • The 2025 patent required a themed outer shell on the drone
  • The new filing drops that requirement from its main claim
  • It focuses instead on onboard real-time script-switching technology

What Actually Changed

Both filings share the same background, drawings, and core description. Both list the same five inventors: Pehr Hovey, Loyal Pyczynski, Madeline Zupan, Clare Carroll, and Scott Watson.

What changed is the scope of what Disney is trying to own.

In the 2025 granted version, the lead claim required a specific physical design: a drone with thematic cladding, described as an outer shell that “extends around and encloses at least a lower portion” of the drone’s chassis.

The new filing drops that. Its main claim instead covers a drone with:

  • One or more onboard show effect devices
  • A memory storing multiple alternate show scripts
  • A controller that compares the drone’s real-time position and timing to a flight plan, and picks a script based on that comparison

The themed shell now appears only in a narrower, secondary claim.

Read plainly: Disney is trying to claim the system, not just drones dressed up like a spaceship or a pirate ship.

The Problem This Technology Solves

Drone shows have one persistent failure mode: keeping every drone on time and on its mark.

Wind, launch delays, and performance differences between individual drones all push aircraft off their planned flight path. In a show where precision is the entire effect, a drone that drifts is a drone that ruins the picture.

Disney’s approach stores multiple scripts onboard rather than one fixed flight plan. If a drone drifts off course or falls behind schedule, its controller switches to a backup script in real time — described in the patent as a “B show” — so the display still reads as intentional.

The Boeing CV2 Cargo Air Vehicle modified as an X-wing drone, on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center

The system also tracks nearby drones and can block or scale back effects such as pyrotechnics if drones get too close to each other or to maintenance crews.

That safety layer is not a footnote. Pyrotechnics on a flying object near other flying objects is exactly the kind of thing that needs an automatic override.

Disney Has Already Flown One

This is not theoretical for Disney.

In December 2019, Walt Disney Imagineering worked with Boeing to fly a modified Boeing CV2 Cargo Air Vehicle over Batuu at Walt Disney World.

The CAV is an electric, remotely piloted aircraft with a 20.2-foot wingspan. It carried an X-wing body shell lit with ultraviolet lights. From the ground, it looked like a real X-wing flying overhead.

That drone is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. It is recognized as the first large remotely piloted eVTOL aircraft used in a commercial operation in the United States.

Scott Trowbridge, senior creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering, said at the time that the flight represented the kind of new technology Imagineers use to bring story-driven experiences to life.

What This Signals

Put the two pieces together and a picture forms.

Disney has flown one large, themed, remotely piloted aircraft over a park. It now wants legal protection for the real-time self-correction technology separate from any particular themed design.

That combination points toward large themed drones that can self-correct mid-show, rather than a swarm of small uniform drones following one fixed path.

The distinction matters for what you would actually see. Swarm shows build images out of hundreds of points of light. A large themed drone is a single object flying overhead that looks like a specific thing — an X-wing, a ship, a character.

Disney appears to be investing in the second approach.

What This Does Not Mean

Here is the necessary caution, because patent stories get overread constantly.

A patent filing is not an announcement. Companies patent technology they never deploy, and Disney holds many patents for things that never reached a park.

There is no project attached to this. No location, no timeline, no show.

A continuation filing is a legal maneuver, not a product decision. Broadening claims protects territory; it does not commit anyone to building something.

What it does tell you is that Disney considers this technology valuable enough to spend money defending more of it, seven years after the original filing. That is a real signal, just a modest one.

The Bottom Line

The new Disney drone patent filing broadens what Disney is claiming: the onboard system that lets a drone switch scripts mid-flight to stay on cue, rather than the themed shell wrapped around it.

Paired with the X-wing flight already in Disney’s history, it suggests continued interest in large themed drones that can correct themselves in real time.

Treat it as a direction rather than a plan. There is no announced show, no date, and no location. But Disney is still spending on this seven years in, and that is worth noting.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
